Breakers cut Leon Henry

Dean Vickerman has wasted no time in preparing for next season as Head Coach of the Breakers, releasing Leon Henry from his contract.

Vickerman informed Henry, who is playing for the Southland Sharks in the New Zealand NBL, on Monday that he was being released from the final year of his contract with the club and would be available to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

"It was one of the toughest things to do as a coach," said Vickerman. "I love Leon, he was a part of the three championships... it was an extremely tough decision, but with the points system, and positions on our roster next year, it just didn't align for Leon.

"Certainly having Reuben [Te Rangi] come into that backup [small forward] spot, then we were looking more for an import at the four spot, so it just didn't work out for Leon."

Think he'll get a contract with another team?
His wife has a recording contract in the States so he may just follow her there and help manage her Career.

Why the points cap is stupid! Perth, Townsville or cairns possibly for him?

Very handy player i must admit, hope he finds a home some where may be perth? I doubt that he would want to play in red. Sad about the points system ask the players if they like it? End of the day they are the one searching for work not us the fans

The points cap is stupid because the three-time champions have to cut a 27 year old bench player and replace him with a 19 year old?

not HAVE to, WANT to... he was contracted to play on what would have been a fairly low points rating (last season he was a 4) so using that as an excuse is just bollocks! There have been numerous possible roster combinations floating around the forums, all with Henry in them and all with a fairly competitive team... You sign players to multiple year contracts to make the most of their low player points ratings, you should honour that commitment if the player has done nothing wrong (and I think in Henry's case, performed very well in limited minutes off the bench).

Hopefully he got paid out and his salary still counts towards the salary cap...

Henry's point rating is 6 but he was rated 4 when he signed, so this season he would have been rated as a 4.

Does this mean that Bruton and Corletto's farcical attempt to get re-rated has failed?

Abercrombie 10
Chief 9
Corletto 7
Bruton 7
Vukona 9
................. ratings just condem us to lose good role players!

If we're going to selectively focus, Rabbit47, I suggest this quote supports an argument for not having imports in the NBL, because it's reducing opportunities for local players:

"we were looking more for an import at the four spot, so it just didn't work out for Leon."

Other players new rating prob hurt Leon more than his own rating.

Players aren't the ones paying the bills.

If they wanted to keep Henry, they could've.

Surprised he didn't successfully appeal his ranking anyway - no way should he be a six. I'd be very surprised if he was picked up elsewhere, to be honest.

NZ ratings are all over the shop

Corletto in the same class as Loughton, Ballinger , Petrie and Rhys Martin. I think not. He is a role player not an impact player like those guys.

Bruton and Webster rated the same - surely not

Dome Rat, the only sensible thing you said there is that Webster shouldn't be the same as Bruton - Bruton should be higher.

It's just the nature of the NBL.

There is no doubt that the points system influenced this decision.

No not directly. They could have kept him, but in light of other players rankings, they need to drop a few points somewhere and they can achieve this by adding Te Rangi in for Henry. (Shed a few points)

They could have and should have appealed his rating.

But knowing the NBL, they would have only dropped it by a point wouldn't they?

You wouldn't expect them to drop two points (they have too much pride I suspect).

In that case, the Breakers need more than 1 point taken off. So in comes Te Rangi (not sure on rating, but no more than a 2 or 3?)

if they are looking at an import to be a PF then who do you get to be a backup center?

I didn't see a problem with the PF rotation of Vukona/Hudson (and using Abo there a little)

Don't know why we need a new import PF?

- Maybe Hudson has demanded a little bit more money and priced himself out of negotiations

-Or maybe we have lost Cedric and need more of an import scoring punch than Hudson can give us.

If Te Rangi is promoted to a roster spot and no longer a development player, wouldn't he would be rated 3?

They have offered Jackson 3year deal and have made resigning him a priority.
Normally Breakers leave the Imports till last and sign up the local contingent.
They would like Hudson back but only if it fits in with other signings.
TeRangi is a 1. Imo he's like Mitch Creek with a decent outside shot.

Great idea that they cut a 27yo to gove a 19yo kid a true shot. Points cap clearly working.

Reuban Terangi was the Junior Tall Blacks Captain for a reason.
The kid can play,
The Breakers talked him out of going to College in the States so they could develop him into a Professional Basketball player here in NZ.
Him getting a full playing contract is part of that promise they made to him if he lived up to his end of the agreement.
