Exciting Times for the Boomers

There are exciting times ahead for the Boomers. The core in Bogut, Mills, Ingles, Delly and Baynes are all still young enough and will play in the 2016 Olympics. We have up and comers in Exum, Motum and Simmons. We have a lot of depth and youngsters coming through.

I have had a shot at the 2014 and 2016 Boomers teams.

2014:
Mills
Delly
Ingles
Baynes
Bogut

Newley
Anderson
Lisch (if available)
Exum
Ogilvy
Gibson
Motum

2016:
Mills
Delly
Ingles
Baynes
Bogut

Anderson
Exum
Simmonds
Gibson
Maker
Lisch (if available)
Motum

Thoughts and changes if you think neccesary. (may have forgotten some.)

They don't need lisch, he's too small for international. He doesn't turn the corner as good as Exum/Mills/Dally/Cadee

Jawai ,maric deserve a mention don't think Andersen will still be in 2016 team. Lisch is too small for international 2 guard would take broekhoff instead. Maker will be 19 and just finishing high school he would be a lock for 2019.

Rhythm, the same guy also said Daly!!! lol.

Gibson shouldnt really be in any full strength boomers side of the future.. I would say with Delly/Mills/Exum playing PG or combo... his spot is more or less taken. Madgen just hasnt got the physical attributes needed to make it against big time world teams.... Maybe in a series against China or New Zealand... but he would get straight up outclassed against anyone worth while. Andersons probably had his day and would probably be aptly replaced by Motum. And I dont understand why the teams mentioned had no Nate Jawai? I am still wondering what brett Brown was smoking not having a proper look at the guy/.

Liche is too small to play an international SG (that I agree with), so why can't he play PG? If he wasn't so valuable to the Wildcats as a scorer he would likely play PG over everyone but Damian Martin. He has very respectable handles, vision, defence, and I would trust him to be a team-first player.

Madgen would likely only make the last spot on the roster as a zone-buster (Peter Crawford-type shooter). Honestly, long-term I'd prefer Ryan Broekhoff over Gibson and Madgen.

Plan for the scenario that Bogut will be injured and Anderson will have retired from international play so you don't get your hopes up.

Jawai is playing well in Barcelona, such a natural scorer for a big. will be interesting to see if Lemanis can bring him back into the Boomers fold, something certainly went awry with the Brown Boomers and Jawai.

I would certainly be putting Jawai ahead of Maric in any teams.Motum also needs to be brought in, very versatile scorer. That seemed to be the boomers biggest weakness the last few campaigns is finding ways to put points on the board when patty or ingles go cold..newley rarely seems to fire so,but his defence and hustle are great.

Andersen and Bogut won't be around. Andersen age and natural drop off and he hasn't ever really produced his euroleague form in the green and gold uni.

Bogut will need to rest his body whenever possible. Its unlikely we'll see him in a Boomers uni again.

Jawai has been exceptional for Barca. I hope he doesn't miss another campaign for Australia until after 2016.

International hoops you need shooting and playmaking off the pick n roll. Lisch provides that. Its hard to flat out say he is too small, expecially when a team like Spain play Rubio and Navarro a lot of minutes. Our point guards are big (Delly & Exum) so running any of Delly, Mills, Exum and Lisch in the backcourt together shouldn't cause too many problems.

I like Blanchfield's game although I haven't seen Motum so I don't know how they compare.

Are Greenwood or Drimic in this mix?

I meant to add Baynes, thought something was a bit off there!... I hope Bogut does play, and Brock Motum hopefully will fill the role of 3 point shooting big man that Anderson leaves. As for Drmic and Greenwood, I am only saying what I have heard, and I havent heard anything special about either of those guys

Rubio & Navarro are both 6'4", Lisch is only 6'2". Both are also far better basketball players than him.

On Bogut I wouldn't be surprised if he never plays for the Boomers again, it's already been 5 years since his last game.

June 9 Boomers v China at WA Basketball Centre.

Odd its not at Challenge or even they hype it up alot and capitalise on the Wildcats success and have a go at filling up Perth Arena?

I realise its a nothing game and it will pretty much be Boomers B out there but still.

Assume the campe will be the week before this, any ideas when the camp squad is being announced?

Navarro is 6'3. Plenty of small SGs internationally, but if Delly is playing alongside him it's not a worry at all as he can guard SG.

Bogut in my opinion will never play for the boomers again due to insurance issues. Especially when he has a fat NBA contract.

YouknowME - who are you getting your information from? Greenwood has been starting point guard for a nationally ranked team the past two seasons, does a little bit of everything for the Lobos, and generally defends the oppositions best guard, ala Damian Martin at Perth. He also hit a lot of big, clutch shots this past season. He is certainly in the Boomers mix as a potential back-up point guard.

Drmic improved out of sight from his freshman to sophomore seasons. His shooting numbers are way up across the board (46% FG vs 38% - 39% 3FG vs 32%) whilst averaging nearly 18ppg, up 6ppg on his freshman season. He's good on the boards to at about 5rpg. Again, he is certainly in the Boomers mix as a back-up shooting guard. Brings really good size to that spot as well at 6'6".

I can't see Lisch really being a part of the Boomers program. I think we have enough options at PG, and given that we play Patty at SG, we really need some size off the bench at that spot.

alexkrad - not sure when squads are going to be announced. Traditionally that series against China has only had a couple of the 'A' list Boomers available, the rest of the team being younger or fringe guys. It will be interesting to see whether any of the main guys make themselves available for any international play this year, given that we've got automatic qualification for the World Cup next year. It will be a good chance for Lemanis to have a look at future potential Boomers.

I say for the China series throw in all the fringe guys. China series could look like this.

Adam Gibson
Dante Exum
Ryan Broekhoff
Hugh Greenwood
Ben Madgen
Anthony Drmic
Jesse Wagstaff
Todd Blanchfield
Nathan Jawai
Brock Motum
AJ Ogilvy
Daniel Johnson

Starting 5
Adam Gibson
Ryan Broekhoff/Hugh Greenwood
Todd Blanchfield
Brock Motum
Nate Jawai

Its a team that has alot of 'probables' and a few 'not particularly likelys but anyways. You would say Exum, Brokhoff, Jawai, Motum and Ogilvy are probably likely for up coming serious campaigns... others have work to do, and I highly doubt that Madgen, Wagstaff, Blanchfield or Johnson would ever make a full strength team.. However, once you take away the main guys at most positions it gets a bit thin at 3-4 players deep in the depth of each position.

PG Adam Gibson 25/ Exum 15
SG Broekhoff 20/ Greenwood 10/ Drmic 10
SF Todd Blanchfield 20/ Madgen 10/ Wagstaff 10
PF Brock Motum 25/ Johnson 15
C Nate Jawai 25/ Ogilvy 15

For the series against NZ you may want to slot in dellavedova, Ingles, Newley, Baynes...

The guys you would take out (who have no hope of playing major games anyways) are Gibson, Blanchfield, Madgen, Wagstaff and Johnson

Must remember, that winning the NZ series reflects seeding.

seen greenwood play, he is no where near boomers level. I wouldnt put him in the mix, not physical enough and would get burnt by guys like madgen/gibson even.

Exum could be unavailable due to under19 duty? With Mills busy we are thin at point guard. For a series against China it wouldn't hurt to throw Norton or cadee into the team they won't make final team but get more experience

For the NZ series we should have Mills, exum, baynes, ingles, dellavedova, newley available would want most of them to win the series we still have pride and seeding to play for.

Emus have a European tour May 23 - June 3, then a pre-world champs tournament in Europe beginning June 18. I can't find a date on the Boomers v China game in China, but its apparently no later than June 14. But I think you might be right about Exum struggling to be part of it psycho.

Actually, I'm assuming there will be a game in China. All games last year were in WA. It really is impossible to find any information about this. BA has listed 'Boomers v China series, June 7-14, WA' so perhaps all games are in WA again.

If NCAA performance is highly regarded:

Delly
Drmic
Jois
Motum

are the best performers

Exum and Simmons developing well but lets see what they do at college. Some players don't make the step up but more than confident that these two will.
Dane Pineau did well at the U19's just finished and has his first year at St Marys later this year.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Best of the crop from college this past season were Delly, Motum, Broekhoff, Drmic, Jois, Bairstow and Greenwood.

People quickly forget that Broekhoff was the last player cut from the London Boomers 12!

Also worth mentioning that Angus Brandt would have been mentioned if he did not go down with injury at the start of the season.

The China series is an opportunity for the up and coming Boomers to get exposed to senior International competition, but also those who are close but not quite there yet.

I agree though that we need to try and get as many of our stronger players as possible for the NZ series...
