Steven Adams to declare for NBA draft?

Averaged 7 and 6 in his one season with Pittsburgh but is said to be looking to declare for the NBA draft.

According to sources, one of the primary reasons for Adams deciding to leave college after just one year is to help provide for his family. He has 18 siblings and his father passed away when Steven Adams was 14 years old.

IMO - silly boy....

He has shown glimpses at Pitt but has not yet shown he is an NBA player.

Hard decision if that is what is on his mind. Good luck to him, hopefully they don't pressure him.

Wow, sounds like a noble but silly decision. If he goes anywhere it will be as 2nd round fodder and then he has much less of a chance of sticking

Another year in college would have helped his game a lot, but you can't blame his decision.

This years weak draft class will mean his is likely a higher pick. The money on offer was too good to turn down.

Gotta feel a bit sorry for him. If you come from a poor family and feel the burden of responsibility, it can be hard to resist the carrot of a multi-million dollar contract dangling in front of you.

As a side note, it's interesting to listen to some Kiwis gloating at the misfortunes of Bogut or the playing time struggles of Mills. It sometimes goes beyond light hearted trans-Tasman jibes and becomes full on resentment/envy.

Definitely hope for nothing but the best for Adams though. He has a lot of potential and all the raw physical tools to make it. Hopefully he's given the time and opportunities to succeed

He can still pull out a certain period of time before (not sure exactly, around a month) if he does not sign with an Agent. Meaning he could go back to school.

My news is however that he has signed with a agent friend of Coach Kenny (his NZ coach/manager).

I'm guessing you're referring to Mills? Most people who follow bball don't overhype him, only those who maybe only see his international form, but they're generally not genuine bball people.

I've read nz reports describing Adams as the "star player" at Pittsburgh. That seems a little uninformed (just as reports in aus mainstream media describing Mills as an NBA star are uninformed).

The point is I hope Adams succeeds, I definitely won't celebrate if he fails, or turns into another Thabeet

If he doesn't hire an agent he can work out with teams then withdraw before mid april to keep eligible at Pitt.

Doesn't look like thats his intention though.

Yes, 18 siblings and heres the amazing fact:

The males heights average 6"9-6"10

The females heights average 6"5-6"6.

All but one of the siblings is over 6"5.

People need to know the facts before judging him. His family are beyond destitution. Literally struggling to live.

At the end of the day, he is going to develop.
This path just means that development will happen in the NBA and not at the college level.

For all the rave Noel gets for being a shotblocker, I must admit Steve absolutely beasted him when they met last year (23pts/10reb)

IMHO, Pitt isn't conducive to Steve's development. He only managed 5.5 shot attempts per game -- and made an impressive 3.1 per game. (57 %)
So frustrating watching those silly guards not give him the ball.
But im not sure whether that was the guards fault for not looking for him often enough or whether that was Dixon's fault for not running more plays through him.

He will go late first round in this weak draft on potential alone!

In 2 years he'd be a force in college and a lock for top 10.

I think someone late first round will draft him and stick him in the D-League to develop over the next few years.

No they didn't pursue Basketball because of the lack of money the family had.

Playing sport/developing etc is expensive.

Plus, the lure of alcohol an drugs in NZ is a pretty serious problem..it almost got Steve, but he shook it.

Projected 19th. Celtics maybe? They need size and Adams has a lot of that!

So why pick Melo last year? They have size but KG might move? Adams needs a solid team like the spurs , nuggets, bucks

There pretty much is no testing the water any more.

http://www.draftexpress.com/article/Testing-the-NBA-Draft-Waters-in-2013-4103/

He'll go late first or early second.

Mobile bigs that can guard the PNR and protect the paint will always have value although he has a long way to go in his development so hopefully he finds the environment (Spurs D League for a while).

C's have no size. Melo is RAW, kg is on the way out/decline and wilcox is no long term option as a starter. China boys all one and done i think as well.

So there are 18 siblings and his sister is a world/Olympic champ is she not. Surely she gets a decent amount of sponsorship, government subsidies and prizemeney on the grand prix circuit. How many of the others are still school age? Of the rest are they incapable of getting a job?

Great the Steve is making the sacrifice but what is the reason the others can't look after the family for another year of 2 while the guy hones his game and gets an education?

Money wont make his families ahrdships any easier. IF alchol drugs are already installed in their culture, then more money will just mean more drugs/booze.

I can totally see why he is nominating, just a sad damned if you do damned if you dont reason.

Steve's minder has stated that he has heard that Adams showed the NBA scouts enough skills and potential to get drafted.

I thought they'd test the water and he'd be back at Pitt for another year at least and work on improving so he could go much higher in the following draft class.

NBADraft.Net have Adams potentially going in the 1st round @ #24 to the Pacers.
Draftexpress have him going 1st round @ #19.
