Whoever the guy is leading Centrals u23 men to a two game win streak!
Miami's 27 & counting could be in danger the way these guys are going...
HaHa Paul Arnott.
Didn't his team just miss finals?
Seriously, how do you judge such a thing?
Is it wins and losses, development of players, ability to coach more than 1 age group???
On what grounds?
Last year they started well out in front of everyone due to recruiting. Recruited well mid season, and by the end of the year needed overtime to win the GF, then didnt do very well at 14 Nationals.
Toby won the winter GF (it didn't go into overtime)and the side was the highest SA finisher at Nationals AND has coached a completely different under 14 team to an undefeated summer season. The current team have all been at Centrals for a long time with only a couple of new country kids.

So hes only as good as any number of Sturt Coaches over the past 10 years. Except that they have done it numerous times.
sorry that we even considered anyone other than a Sturt Coach dirty..
so any/all Coaches from Sturt
they're just the best
especially at getting kids from other teams....

If you are judging purely on results then yes your are correct. Except that both Norwood and Forestville both get more recruits from other clubs than Sturt.

lol, doesn't take long to be a Sturt bashing thread..
didn't the current centrals 14s make finals 2 yrs prior?

I would agree that Gareth Pennington from Centrals is the best coach at that club. Every team he coaches does well. He is the current U18 Girls Div 2 coach.
Guess that proves coaching must be better at Forestville and Norwood if they've attracted more players than sturt. lol

There is no question that the Sturt coaches are only as good as the last kids they poached from underperforming clubs.
I'm pretty sure Sturt don't poach, it's more like pillage and plunder!!!

Sounds like they don't recruit as much as Norwood and Forestville.

You are all battling to be the second best behind my son.
What a stupid thread. All it proves is that most Hoops posters have no idea. Not one of the names mentioned would even be close. In fact they'd struggle to even get a Div 1 spot at stronger clubs.
Throwing up names like Lockwood and McDonald? I'm sure they are top blokes and are doing their best, but top district coach? You guys must be taking the piss.

Having worked with Scott Freer in his Forestville days, his knowledge of the game is amazing.
He also could identify real talent, and remember he was the one that picked up, dropped off, did free indies and spent many a Sunday training Majok in his own time.
Scott Freer is just great at junior level
Centrals didn't do well at nationals. Are you serious? 6 wins and 2 losses, including a win against Melbourne Tigers who finished second overall. Lost to team who finished 4th by 6 after beating Tigers a few hours earlier and the other team didn't play that morning so were fresher. Also had their captain out pretty much whole tourney so had 7 players and 4 were bottom age.
Want to rethink that ignorant comment you idiot. Get your facts right before you sell the boys at Centrals short. Moron!
Oh and in summer that season before recruiting they beat Sturt with one top age player.

Scott Freer is an absolute legend of SA Basketball!
anon,
Sooo, your saying that Centrals didnt perform as well as Forestville did in the Girls then?
Where did Centrals finish? In the top 10? If so, well done.
Scott Freer once saved my whole family from a burning building by carrying us out of the fire one by one in a defensive stance.

I reckon John from north had alot to offer .He tried to implement the same intensity as the best, but fell a little short with balance.Give an a for effort.
cares about them hey...
1. How do you assess a coach w/l ratio? give any muppet a top quality team they should do well.
2. Most people can assess talent sheesh not hard to be in a position to recruit and refer to 1.
3. What has the clubs overall w/l got to do with one coach?
There are plenty of the District comps best coaches developing kids with great skill out there in the MUCH lower divisions so some D1 coach always guaranteed to be able to pick the strongest team gets their best shot..
What about Peter Berry with his Etch-A-Sketch board? Haha
The messiah Corey MacLean?
Good old Toby Lockwood? Haha
Michael Rogers? John Della Pia?

Threads like this make me so proud to be a Victorian!
#791, if I was Corey Maclean I'd be pretty annoyed at being included in the same post as those other three names.

Gareth Pennington is the WORST coach I have ever come accross!!!
And your spelling is probably the worst I've come across!
Only when the coach who coached him, coaches him.

Interesting post re John from North
Have gotten to know him over last year OR so and he is obviously a coach who cares about his players and team. Gives a lot to the sport and his players play hard for him.
Hasn't had a lot to work with over years but gets the best from his outfits.
Last year he developed a great competitive group of U16 Boys and assisted 3 of those boys to make State teams.
Respected by many of his peers and a very passionate person however don't be fooled he is a tough man.

Interesting call Starman!!
Like Scott Freer work with Majok, Dellapere worked with the 2 Sudanese boys to give them an opportunity at Nationals.
He is a loyal worker at North and has a talented daughter I believe coming through early age groups.
Probably not considered up with the Sturt clan of so called super coaches but certainly respected and it would be good to see him have a crack as a state coach or assistant.
