Can a 10 NBL teams league with team promotion work

While BA emphases a sustainable NBL franchise bid is necessary for expansion, I am wondering can a team promotional model will work? Eg. the NBL to have a delegated second tier league with the top two teams from this league will promote to the NBL each season while the bottom two of NBL will be demoted. In some sense, that may ensure the top finance sustainable teams will remain in the top league while the minor league teams will have chance to advance when they have better financial support that will also reflect on their respective playing performance. The minor league may be consisted of teams from Aussie and NZ while NBL would fix on a 10 teams format. Wondering is there any similar model being run in Europe and that is sustainable?

Thatwould be good but lets say a big market team like Sydney or Melbourne get demoted the fans would likely stop attending games and the NBL would lose money

How big is the skill difference between SEABL and NBL? If not too great, it's workable. If hopelessly apart, no can do.

Give a promoted team a marketing budget as a promotion benefit and it might do alright.

Multiple SEABL MVP winner CJ Massingale, if given minutes would be a role player in the NBL. That's the leap you're looking at from SEABL to NBL.

I think this model is more like the English Prmiere League, they have at least two teams in the major capital cities, it won't loss too much viewership in case one of these teams get demoted. Team get demoted may reflect they may not managed well financially that season. For team get promote, they usually take some years to build up and advance in higher tier.

THe original plan for BA's interest in getting control of SEABL was to have promotion and relegation from the state leagues into the new underpinning league (SEABL). For example the winner of Big V could in theory challenge the bottom placed Victorian team in the underpinning league for their spot only if they wanted to. Not sure whether that is still in the plans but there was certainly a paper presented on this format earlier.

Sharod asked if it would work.

No. It wouldn't.

In any respect.

Its not even about the gap between the two best leagues, NBL and QBL.

Its about the capacity of promoted teams to compete in a myriad of ways.

- front office sophistication
- team preparation
- venue
- crowd and sponsor delivery

Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat are probably the best all round programs (team, crowds, supporters, sponsors etc) in the SEABL, none of them could step up enough in between seasons to stand up at NBL level. None of them could turn their 35k naming rights into a 300k naming rights, none would have a good enough venue etc etc.

That is why it wouldn't work.

Its even worse when you step up to the next level. Imagine if Rocky one the QBL and got promoted ... how would they cope in the NBL?

Anon, you are right. BA put it in a paper. Then someone asked them how it would work and they looked at each other and mumbled and took it out of the paper. They really had no plan at all, its was just the most stupid thing for them to put up.

They never understand the core problem, which was that teams get promoted but clubs don't. So Bendigo women come first in the UPL, but their men come last and get relegated. Now you have their men in BigV and their women in SEABL and BOTH programs become unsustainable.

Unfortunately too many NBL teams are already unsustainable. Team v club is not the issue here, it is the unrealistic expectations of the current NBL in its entirity...

To achieve a two tiered competition similar to EPL we need a whole competition change, lessen the expectation! Unfortunately...

Won't happen...
