Patty Mills lighting it up!
Looks like Parker is out and Patty is taking advantage by putting up some large numbers! Check it out.

So far 5/9 from field plus 1/4 (3ptrs) with 5/5 from the line, 1 assist and total of 16 points, 4 rebounds and 3 T/O's.
Would like to see more assists...

funny given all the new posts people start up about how patty's career is stalling or he isn't good enough etc. etc. At the start of the year he was used as an undersized SG, getting minutes ahead of De Colo, then was playing more of a PG role, then seemed to lose practically all his minutes to De Colo, now he's getting more again. It's hard to keep track of.
Though through all this his numbers when he's had playing time have been solid and he is one of the best spot-up shooters in the NBA. His drop off in minutes seemed a little puzzling as it wasn't really borne out by the numbers he was putting up.
Can't quite figure it out but who am I to question Popovic

So much of the NBA is about matchups. There are a lot of people he just can't guard.
Unless you are a bona-fide NBA starter, or perhaps a sixth-man type, your playing time often has as much to do with who you're playing against as it does how you individually are playing.
Neal - 6'4" 95kg
De Colo - 6'5" 91kg
Mills - 6'0" 84kg
Parker - 6'2" 84kg
Average starting SG in the NBA is ~6'6" 95kg.
Average starting PG is ~6'2" 86kg.
It really doesn't matter how well Patty plays he won't be taking meaningful minutes away from Parker any time soon, and he's too small to play SG whilst Parker is on the floor, at least against most NBA SG's.
@Naph, you are right, except if Mills on the court forces the other team to respond with a better matchup for him.
Not saying that Mills demands that, but that is why you can have undersized PG and SG in the NBA - if they force the other team to play a smaller guy on them to handle the speed.

this is what mills has to do. take his chances when he is given an opportunity and lets be honest earlier in the season when he was given an opportunity he didnt take it. without seeing the game would like to see a few more assists but perhaps it was manu running the point and patty playing a SG role. he has to excel at his niche and give the team an option, be it pace, more up and down play, higher energy. whatever his role, he has to do it well and he will be given more opportunities when the games present themselves for him

Anon: What you're saying is true, but it requires bigs that can get up and down as well.
Duncan, Splitter, Blair, Bonner, those aren't guys that want to run the floor for any extended period of time.
If you can't maxmise the advantage of your quick guards, then your opponent is probably just going to give up the odd transition basket and keep playing to their own strengths.
