Big V: Pakenham Warriors

Could there have been a shift in power in D2M?

The Warriors have truly jumped out of the blocks in their championship race with two wins to open their pre-season campaign.

After dominating last years finalists Melton which saw the Warriors jump to a commanding 26-15 lead at the quarter time break in front of a healthy home crowd at the Colosseum and held sway eventually coming away with a dominating 75-54 win.

The Warriors backed up against Coburg once again getting out of the blocks to a 18-9 lead and despite the Giants making several surges at the lead the new look Warriors were able to withstand every run running away a very comfortable 14 point winners 69-55.

Given the Warriors open the season against Coburg in Round One the signs are pointing to a first up win.

Could this be the year we see a club go from last to first in one season?

From what Ive seen they are lacking a go to 4-5.

They will make finals but getting past teams with legit bigs will be a struggle

Over the weekend Bill Winder average about 18 points. I think you will find.

It's clear this squad has it all. There were 3 injured players to come back into the team that did not play on the weekend.

One of which is All Star nominee from last season and almost made the All Star 5.

Results dont lie.

Moving forward the is a very good chance that the Warriors will go 5-0 to open the season. Look at the fixture they are playing Coburg (just beatn them easily), Mornington, Westernport, Melton (another win this weekend past), Maccabi.

The only team to of made finals in recent years is Melton.

Two wins doesnt make a season but for a team starved of success it is a step in the right direction.Big growth area so should be a club on the up.

From what I saw on the weekend I'd say by time round 1 comes around the gap between Pakenham and Coburg might be up around the 20-25 points margin. Possibly more...

Jay Ferriere, is perhaps the best guard in the D2 this year. college basketball and Big V Championship-experienced Ferriere set to play for Pakenham. He has spent four years at Manhattanville College, captaining the team, in the NCAA Division III competition after a successful time playing for Ringwood and Sherbrooke in the Big V SCM comp.

Melton will struggle big time this season. Have no true big man or quality PG. 2 of the required quality at this level. The club has seemed to come in leaps and bounds in the last 18 months but without cash will struggle to recruit the required cattle to be successful long term.

Marty P will be in contention for Allstar 5 this year. He missed Saturdays game but will be playing this year. Also Melton have picked up McCallum from Altona D1M

They will be solid this year

A domestic club could win the championship in D2M if they spent the money that Pakenham have spent.

Signing cheques is not an achievement.
