Taipans @ Crocs (Reptile Rumble, Sat 9 Feb)

Crocs host the Taipans tonight, tipping off 7:30 pm QLD time.

Cairns have won both pre-Nevill encounters with Townsville this year.

with both teams lacking in any real depth its going to be a dogfight.

Neville could possibly end up with 30 & 20 tonight.

it will be a close game but im tipping taipans to win the dogfight by 3.

Nevill doesn't rebound at a great rate so 20 rebounds is a bit out there.

Those refs were terrible. Three fouls that game on Cairns that didn't even happen. Wouldn't be surprised if there was corruption in NBL after tonight's game. Fucking pathetic.
Wilson was also pathetic in OT's. Pass the fucking ball.

yep, that was a dogfight.....WTF was with the lack of interior defence?? once either team got head and shoulders past...it was a lay up.

ingles 13 - i realise nevill isnt the greatest rebounder but it was against cairns who cant buy a second shot against any team.

"Wilson was also pathetic in OT's. Pass the fucking ball."

10 points in OT, 7 points in last 4mins of fourth quarter. He kept the Taipans in the bloody game and then wore out. He only took three shots in 2OT.

Wilson was awesome and so were Crawford and Ervin, fantastic shoot-out of clutch shot after clutch shot. Shane Edwards growing into a very solid NBL player too.

Paul - quick check Wilson took 7 of cairns 10 shots in first OT. Surely there were some better options instead of driving and throwing at the ring? Maybe passing to Edwards? Or an open shooter?
As a cairns fan it is frustrating that at least 5 games this season, his selfishness at the end of the game when there are other open players around has IMO heavily contributed to them losing the game. He took 18 shots from memory, probably 10 were in that last few mins of regulation and the 2OTs when the other guys were doing well with him being the passer the rest of the game...

He scored 18 points in the last 14 minutes at 46% and kept the team in it. If he's not aggressive the rest of the team struggle to score that much put together!

The biggest issue for Cairns was he only took one shot in the last three minutes of the second OT.

Always thought you had a good handle on things but Cairns total lack of imagination on offence down the stretch cost them the game. Look at the shooting % of the perimeter guys. Give them the ball. Jamar and Ervin in head to head battle makes great tv but you wont win many games going one on three. Yes he did a good job of it but his team lost. Perhaps look how Cairns built their lead.

I think I remember the play properly, the one with about 1:30 to go in 2OT. Gliddon blocks Ervin, Wilson picks up the crumbs and starts dribbling up court on a bit of a fastbreak. He has Steindl streaking like a greyhound down the sideline on Wilson's side (with a clear passing angle), yet decides to hit Gliddon who catches up to him. Gliddon jacks the three over a hand, misses and the Crocs keep the two point lead and have possession. I reckon the game would have been totally different if Jamar hit Steindl who was naked on the three point line...stupid decision. Jamar is prone to crunch time brain explosions and it's pissing me right off.

Perhaps have a look at what Cairns other players have done down the stretch over the season when theyve had the chance. There's a reason Wilson has to make plays.

What cost Cairns the game tonight was their inability to defend, as it has for most of the season. Certainly Wilson shoulders his share of blame for that, as he has for most of the season.

Out of interest, in those last 14 minutes the rest of the team shot 10/23 and scored 17 points, Wilson had 18 points on 6/13.

At the point he imposed himself the team had just been outscored 9-5 over almost four minutes. From there they scored 35 in 14 minutes.

Offence was not the problem, but it is understandable that Cairns fans have built unrealistic expectations for Wilson down the stretch after last season.

Our expectations are for him to make the right decision, not shoot 90% of the time the game is close and he gets the ball.

Fair enough, agree to disagree. I think when youve scored 18 points down the stretch you should keep shooting. A lot of Aussies dont seem to like that though.

By the way, some bad late night maths above, the 10/23 for rest of team was for last 20 mins and produced 27 points.

I thought wilson was fantastic. Townsville just outlasted them. Hard to win when three of your best guys are fouled out. Cairns shot the ball from deep ridiculously well all game. Townsville was plagued by effort issues early and it cost them. Lucky to walk away with the W.

Also Woolpert needs to seriously rethink his second quarter rotations.

That stretch of a Cedar, Cedar, Norton, Hinder, Allen lineup dug such a big hole it took the rest of the game and two overtimes to fight back.

Seriously bad coaching in that stretch there. Don't know what he was thinking...

Wilson was fantastic. Plus Fearne calls 1-4 flat for Wilson in the crunch, so if you are going to blame someone blame Fearne.

I personally thought it was the right call, Wilson was efficient and can create good shots unlike some of his team-mates. They just couldnt get a stop.

Paul. Not being critical of Wilson or his ability. It is clearly obvious that Cairns are going to go to Wilson down the stretch and have done so consistently in every tight game. This iso stuff is easy to guard and very predictable. You can still have Jamar making plays just get more players involved and the team will be harder to guard and he will be more efficient.
Their record in close games is not good, so what they are doing is not working. Yes their inabilty to defend
maybe a bigger problem.
