CJ Massingale... failed experiment?

Well, its getting a bit awkward now isnt it? his 3rd game in the league this season, and has produced.. well nothing... has shown no upside what so ever in the NBL.. I am yet to see signs that it is about to improve either.. so whats to be done with CJ Massingale?

I understand, he is merely an import that was meant to be our 8 or 9th player off the bench, filling a Darren Ng type role and that he shouldnt be held to the same standards as other imports... But, he isnt even competent at that much right now. Darren Ng hits threes consistantly and was an instant offense.. Massingale is yet to hit a shot for the 6ers despite being MVP multiple times in the SEABL... Has the Experiment failed? Is it the end of the road for Massingale?

He looks completely overwhelmed in the NBL.. and the sad thing is, he seems like a good guy.. but maybe not cut out for this level of basketball.. apon seeing his highlight tapes, I was skeptical as to whether he could rise to this level... Not particular quick, doesnt really have an array of moves.. just shoots well.. At the moment, his shot isnt dropping, which you could forgive if he was bringing other intangibles, but he isnt.. he has played 3 games so far.. clocked some fair court time.. and has done literally nothing to positively effect the team. Will Marty Clarke sack him? will he demote him to a development player role? what is the plan now for Massingale? will he get a few more games to prove himself or is there a chance Marty Clarke might even drop him before then?

Its a bit of a shame that it doesnt look like its working out for Massingale... this will be his one and only chance at NBL at the age of 30. I dont think hes going to work.... how long can the 36ers afford to baby sit?

as long as they want, as hes cheap and is still finding his feet, need to remember where talking about a 40k import not a 180k import

would be completely different if was the typical kind of import, hes there to compliment not dominate

personally last night was a shocker for him
but previous 2 games hes done what hes meant to do as far as the teams is concerned

You hit it on the head 8th/9th player on a team much more talented than the recent teams Ng was part of.

Regardless of his previous 3 games, other NBL coaches know he can produce therefore they can't afford to sleep on him. His record in the SEABL is exceptional and that was when he was surrounded by NBL calibre players and playing against.

It has been said by the coach that he has no pressure of expectation on him and it will be a matter of time when he has a breakout game. Its not like the court & ring dimensions and rules are different to SEABL.

Far from failed. It is round 3?? Get over it Adelaide fans. Embrace your players for one season. You might enjoy it

Showed ability in the pre-season. Like Schenscher needed to relax and get some confidence, I think CJ is in the same boat.

Hurls.... It's people like you that make it harder for players in Adelaide. I have a question for you. Have you ever played professional sport? It's very easy to sit behind a computer and criticise. If you are such a 36ers fan why don't you support your team. Obviously CJ is adjusting to fitting into the NBL and I am sure he is fully aware that it is his only chance in the NBL.. Get off his back and be a supportive fan.. I am sure if he comes out next game and makes those shots you will be nothing but positive.. Like a lot of 36ers fans!!

I was frustrated by CJs game last night. Mainly because I wanted him to silence his critics. However it took Luke 3 games to show his importance, hopefully it will take CJ an extra game.

Anonymous, I am aware that I havent played professional sports.. that is not news to me. And what I do know from my position is that ALOT of people adjust quicker and better then he has, and ALOT of people are dropped by there 3rd game for not contributing. As for cheering him on, I wanted nothing more then for him to get his game on track and drop shots... I was cheering for him to shoot it every time he caught the ball.. as I said He seems like a good guy, I have nothing personally against him... but, 3 games in and basicly no positive stat to show for it... players have been sacked for contributing far more then he has. as for being "nopthing but positive" if he gets it together, I am not a fickle idiot that asigns heroes after 1 game. case in point, Shensh finally had an adequate game.. I was glad for it... HOWEVER I am reserving my thoughts on him for a few more games because he could go back to shit just as easy... Dont assume me to be an idiot... fact of the matter is, he hasnt proven himself yet... and there comes a point in pro sports (whether or not I have played it, this is an obvious point) that you HAVE TO PROVE YOURSELF... Game 3 may be early days yet... but if he hasnt done anything still by games 5 and 6 will you still be thinking to just let him have a go.. or will you be thinking... HMMMM perhaps that money could be better spent?

Right now, I doubt he will get fired, the 6ers are winning and they can afford him there.. as they say "if it aint broke dont fix it" and the 6ers arent broken so for now the status quo will uphold.. if they string a couple of loses together and he hasnt provided his head will be on the chopping block mark my words... I am all for letting people grow and having a fair go.. but I have seen 19 year olds slip into the league and play far better off the bat.

Hurls I was in no means calling you an idiot... You refer to a lot of people being cut due to not performing in 3 games.. Do you mean imports? I'm not sure of the Australian players if that's who you referring to. I think as discussed on here in previous posts that people need to lose the perception that Cj is an import. He is playing for the minimum salary, with no perks like a car or accommodation so essentially he is like a 19 year old coming into the league except the has left his wife and young child in melbourne. He does not have so called pressure on him from the team but I can imagine the pressure he is putting on himself as he knows that it is his only shot at that NBL. All I was really asking is that people on this forum are cautious with what they write. You say you we're cheering him on and I'm sure you love the 36ers and yes it was good to see Luke have a reasonable game. But I'm sure that these players do actually read what is posted on here and the Facebook page and I'm certain it would do nothing for their confidence. I don't know Cj personally but I'm sure he is definitely feeling the pressure and down on himself. Fingers crossed for him nd the 6ers for next game. He is alone in Adelaide why don't you invite him out for dinner or something and make him feel at home :)

Well, If i were a man with money... I would actually... dont get me wrong, I dont wanna see him dropped... I just wanna know where this is heading. and as I said on my first post, I knew he wasnt going to be the star, but at the moment, they need more from him... But yeah... all I can say is, i know hes a lights out shooter... all it takes is one good game to turn a season around.

Massingale - 8 mins per game, 1 shot taken per 6 mins played, 0 shots made of 4 (total) taken, all shots were 3-pointers

Ng (2011-12) - 15 mins per game, 1 shot taken per 3 mins played (~5 per game), 2 shots made per 5 taken, 2 3-pointers made per 5 taken. Ng was playing 6th or 7th player in (7th in mins played, just behind Creek) on a team that lacked scorers (he was 5th most frequent shooter in that team).

Basically, if Massingale has a fair game next week and takes 4 shots, hitting 3 of them, then he'll be matching Ng's season average for last season. Massingale has been

One question is whether he can do that? That's basically what I see Hurls asking. I'd qualify that by asking can he do it if and when he will be needed to do it? i.e., when the preferred shooters in front of him are not firing well and when the inevitable injuries elevate him to 7th or 8th player in?

Based on the stats, it's too early to say. However, as a supporter, I'd want to be seeing something in his on court persona and presence that suggests he will be able to step up when needed. I haven't seen that in the season proper but his pre-season suggested it's there. I'm comfortable with waiting to see what he does over the next few weeks or longer.

Labour agreement rules state imports must be on 60k minimum unless he is naturalised ,

Should have kept Kyle miller from centrals or junior salter from west for that role , both would have returned a better result

He would be on 60k annual salary but once you pay from September to march it would be 40k the 36ers end up spending

I am thinking it is too early to call.

He is not like a Diamon Simpson or one of the many import stars in previous seasons that started, so he is not an import is the mind of some purists.

He definitely appears to be the 8th or 9th man on the roster, although Crossy seems to be between a rock and a hard place too.

Last night starters:

Schench; DJ; Stevie; Cadee; Gibbo

6. Peach, 7. Creek, 8. CJ, 9. Crossy, 10. Pero

I am wondering if the issue is not so much his ability, but finding his niche in the team.

Having said that, I hope he has a blinder soon.

He's been garbage for us so far this season. Give him a few more games but if he still continues to show absolutely nothing, get rid of him and get a youngster in his spot who has a developmental upside.

Give the guy a chance to adapt to doing something totally different. Gone from being a stud scorer, the best in quality league, taking around 20 shots and playing 30 plus minutes, to being a specialist shooter. Much tougher than you can imagine, I'm sure that is all you critics can do - imagine.
Given more minutes he will be fine, if he continues to play limited minutes he will struggle. If someone in main rotation gets hurt he will be great insurance.

So many experts that beleive a 10 point player that comes cheaply shouldnt be expected to deliver. The Basic rule of imports isnt $60,000 a season either.
The Sixers took a risk on CJ and no one else has done previously. Clearly trhre may have been a reason for that. Of course if he did perform then thay were great recuitrs. He currently is an import and for me wnen he becomes and aussie soon he should be busting his guts to be one of the best players on the court.
Already time is running out. Sixers have fond some mone mysyeriously and have the luxury of an import off the bench who gets paid not a lot and cant deliver. Clarke got it wrong yet again.

^^ definition of wtf

No one has expected him to be a stud in the NBL
He is only rated 10 points as that is what the rule is, not because of his ability.
Absolutely worthwhile taking the chance for the money. He did show in the preseason he is capable of contributing. He has replaced Ng at a much reduced wage which the enabled other pieces to be added to the team.

Exactly, without checking the stats i remember last season it took Herbert a couple of games to get going and im pretty sure he had a couple of 0pt games to start the season, then ended up playing some reasonable games and had a half decent statline for a 8th-10th man by the end of the season,

I see no reason why we dont give CJ a chance to do this, its not like he is playing big minutes or forcing up shots that are not there, at the moment to me he hasnt put any points on the board but hasnt done much wrong either, the shots that he took were there and he passed up others which werent, which is what you want from a role player.

Sure if we had a 100k+ in the salary cap to replace him with you wouldnt be this patient, but on minimum salary, and by all reports he is extremely professional and not upsetting team chemistry even though not playing big minutes, so i stay stick with him and let him come good, ala Herbert and Ng last season.

Personally i was getting my frustrated with Schensch offensively before the last game, shooting low percentage as he would be on decent $$ and therefore be expected to preform at a high level, ie similar to v cairns each game. So well done Luke and i hope to see you have a great season.

Good luck CJ, and go sixers!!

'021, based on ABL ability? And guarantee that they wouldn't suffer nerves when elevated? Come on - of those, CJ is a fine selection given the circumstances. The one issue is these nerves.

I remember Jason Williams was king of the court at ABL level then never really looked confident even after x years in the NBL. Not everyone adjusts instantly (like Ingles, Madgen, etc).

Definitely dont think he is a failed experiment.
Despite his failed attempts of nailing a basket on the weekend, I am happier he got the shots up.

Its a case of time will tell. In Schenscher's two games and very early on in game 3, i heard many groans and yet he came to the fore and played well.

Difference is Luke is a go-to man with his height. CJ is a role player without height.

I spoke with people from Vic who know SEABL well. They said, give him a little time. Thats fair

I said this AFTER THE 1ST GAME.

And 2ND GAME WHEN HE DIDNT SCORE.

Hes a dud.

NO WAY would he be on 40k, more like 10/15K LMAO.

He will be sacked very soon.

Re Money - it was worth him taking up an NBL contract as it will make his citizenship easier.

The point about his role is very true. He has never been a role player and has always had the ball in his hands. The change to becoming a role player in limited minutes is quite large.

His first game against Melb was fine. He stood in the corner and Melb denied him the ball and spacing was good while he was out there.

He didn't really play against NZ.

He was good against CRNS. He forced some contested shots as perhaps he was reading these forums...:-)

He will be fine.... He scores in bunches which he hasn't had yet. Although it may be unlikely that he will ever get a chance to score in bunches with all the weapons on the 36ers team.

0-4 in twenty minutes would have happened a lot in the SEABL career although he would have been given the chance in the second half to keep shooting.

If he plays good D and the spacing is good while he is on the floor there is no way he will be given the sack.
