Should the nbl become semi pro?

With a small fan base and teams going bust annually, should tge league look to take a step back and become a semi pro league with a 300k salary cap?

No. I think that would be a big backwards step. Id like to reduce the salary cap but not from 800k to 300k. We already have SEABL which is semi pro enough for me.

The cap is 1mil not 800k. Perhaps slug it back to 600k? Thats still more than enough to live on.

Teams just have to learn to spend what they can afford. Just like the Hawks have. The past 2 seasons they have only spent 700k and this year they have pushed it to 750k based on strong attendance numbers.
Just be smart.

It is semi-pro.

Which teams have their own practice facilities/gym?

Who is the best staffed team with Assistant Coaches, full time S+C, physio, doctor, access to technology an facilities?

On the road, teams hire minivans driven by the Head Coach or the Assistant, right? Can't afford to hire a coach. Is that professional?

What do the 8th/9th/10th/11th get on a roster? $25k-$40k? Average wage is between $60k and $80K.

anonymous... its not 600K per player, its 600 K per team you are suggesting there... and I dont know what quality of imports you expect to have when on average your gonna be giving 50 K per player and the best will be wanting upwards of 100-150 to make it worth there time! we dont need to downgrade the league./

min wage $35K, average $80-90K.

Id say about 75k is average wage going by salary cap and not all teams meeting the cap

average club spend around $900K. average wage around $90K. Median wage closer to $80K probably.

Meant average Australian wage. For the whole country. You've got maybe a third of your workforce below average Australian income.

$300K is too low for any NBl team. Certainly the NBL is close to folding. Semi Pro may be the way to go, with a higher salary cap than you are suggesting.

$300k is seriously low.

I believe NZNBL teams usually spend around $350-$450k (the latter figure been teams like the Saints and Pistons)

Teams just have to be fiscally responsible. Just because there is a $1m salary cap, doesn't obligate them to spend it entirely.
It's important that teams pay market value for the "second-tier" players like Bennie Lewis, Kerry Williams, Ben Allen, Jeremiah Trueman.

Just have to make sure they dont overpay these players, as it will greatly reduce the chances of getting stud imports and/or good Australian players back from overseas.

I like the fact that nobody was willing to give Dillon a go.
He priced himself out of the market, and its good to see no team gave in and took him on board.

So what you are suggesting is we send 80% or so of the current NBL players overseas so they can earn their market value? Insane.

Cairns, Townsville, Wollongong (probably other teams too), have self-imposed caps and do not spend anywhere near the full salary allowance. It's not rocket science.

What was dillon asking? 100k?

Id like to see the teams cut costs whilst cash flow is low. Set the cap at 600k. Also well done on hawks only spending 750k with whats a great team!

Davidson 100k
Forman 100k
Saville 100k
Hurdle 70k
Deleon 130k

Mcmillan 40k
Jackson 40k
Coenraad 60k
Demos 50k
Martin 60k

Total: 750k

The hawks show we can cut expenses without reducinh quality too much. Perhaps introduce luxury tax so richer teams can pay above whilst boostibg the leagues coffers.

The skill set developed for basketball is desirable in football and many other sports. If we want to retain any kids in the sport they need to at least be able to dream that they can some day play as a professional. Many country footballers already make more money than the average semi pro basketballer. The strength of the NBL will depend on how strong the grass roots of the sport are, crowds and sponsorship grow from there. The existing one million salary cap does nothing to keep any kid with a dream from planning a pathway in the US colleges or euro leagues, very few spots available to keep them interested in playing here.

You can cut the salary cap a bit but you need more clubs so just as much or more money is being paid to players.

The league needs to work to get more $ from major sponsors or a better tv deal so the clubs can benefit from more funding, like other sports codes.
This will allow the cap to increase and attract higher quality players. I don't think it's too far away and hopefully we see Brisbane and maybe a Canberra back to cover major markets.
Shenanigans going on at tigers and kings don't help, those teams need to be successful to bring in the corporate $

A bigger salary cap doesn't necessarily mean we will get better players. I like the cap where it is and don't think it should be changed, smaller or bigger.

Add that 250k salary cap change teams like Townsville and Wollongong have from their payroll to one of the import slots and you could land a pretty nice import or Aussie playing in Europe.

Say the Hawks spent Deleon's cash, plus the payroll surplus on one guy. What kind of player can you get with 380k? A pretty nice one if you know your stuff.

The problem is that the big market teams with the $$$ to spend have no idea how to put a team together.

Another case study:

Townsville have only spent a little over half a million on their Aussie players. So, they had nearly half a million to spend on one or two imports. It's quite a staggering figure.

In theory they could have brought in a rookie for the minimum (Crocs have no rookies this year), and given one import or euro aussie nearly half a million big ones.

If you develop local guys long-term that will play for their hometown club for less, you can have lots of financial freedom (strictly speaking roster-wise, of course...the crocs are struggling to get people through the gate these days and aren't in the best shape in terms of off-court finances), and if the local public hadn't lost interest in the game and the team, and Townsville was still a more financially succesful franchise and could spend the full cap, you could truly land some monster foreign-based Australian or American talent.

It's a well put together roster, fiscally, is what I am trying to say. And that's even though Peter Crawford got overpaid on his shiny new contract...

I think (just a hunch, haven't done the math) Cairns are spending a little more this year than last year, but again, very fiscally responsible club that doesn't spend the cap.

A lot of negativity for the idea, yet no one has actually presented a scheme or structure for a potential semi-pro league.

Is it just the words Semi-Pro that put us off this idea, or do we just have no other options on the table?

Yes we need more TV and sponsorship, yes we need bums on seats, yes we need to have an attractive product to sell, yes we need to foster our own pathways and yes we also need imports!

The big question is more like which comes first, the chicken or the egg... We have been placing the cart in front of the horse for a while now and getting nowhere fast, so something needs to change!

Bad idea or not, at least we need to consider something because teams can't keep folding in the highest league in this country any longer, I am sick of that happening.....
