Taipans second import - Shane Edwards?

Fearne isn't releasing the name - surprised it hasn't been leaked somewhere but we have 7 days to try and figure it out before he arrives from the US

(Mod: Updating the title with some speculation from Boti Nagy.)

The cagey coach was back to his best yesterday afternoon when he volunteered that their 10th and final contracted player was a tall, athletic pick-up from the US.
Fearne was also quite upfront about the Kerry Williams signing. Said he needed to show more this season to continue his NBL career further.

Kept pretty quiet.. But will likely come off the bench backing up Trig and Alex. Could play some 3 as well.

Kept pretty quiet Nat? Does that mean you know who it is?

Possible Rychart might end up playing some SF too.

Boti says it's Shane Edwards:

EXPECT Cairns Taipans to announce 202cm US forward Shane Edwards as the final piece of their 2012-13 iiNet NBL Championship puzzle soon.
Boti's blog entry has more NBL chit-chat that you might want to read, but nothing further on Edwards.

Edwards is 6'7". Appears to have had a couple of decent years in the DLeague before being largely overlooked for minutes recently.

NBA.com has him down for a two minutes of NBA game time at Denver in 2010-11. Averaged 12 and 5 back in college. One Euro stint had him in single figure scoring.

He's #31 in this video in the play from the 25 second mark:

Might be more highlights - haven't watched beyond that.

His stats certainly look impressive, can score and shoots a good percentage from the field and the three point line. Looking forward to see him play. A bit different to the banger that had previously been mentioned.

Too short,it's bad enough having Trigger as an ACME centre. They'll have more forwards than Hawthorn!

All signs mentioned a big banger, but Shane can rebound like Ellis for the crocs - undersized but enjoys the contact around the rim. Good finisher at the rim with contact with a handy 60% FG%. He has been on the radar for the last 2 years and Fearne says he will compliment the 3 big rotation and give more options than crossie/loughton.

Expect Alex to go play more C than PF (like he did at Perth before he went to Europe) - It looks like a mobile front court with Shane as the explosive athletic counter-punch to inside with trig and outside with Alex. Dusty does what Dusty is best at - cleaning up the boards.

Cairns will be dangerous.

NZ are worse than last year. So are Perth. (on paper at least).

Contenders indeed.

He's certainly a higher quality player than I was expecting. If Williams can be solid this year they have a very good team, that's the big IF though.

On a recent trip to the taipans office to confirm tickets etc, the office staff were asked how Boti knew ahead of time. They were a bit cagey about it and said 'the coach(Fearne) won't be happy' LOL

Shane Edwards was confirmed today in The Cairns Post as the player turning up on the 30th.

In unrelated news, Aaron Grabau snapped a tendon on his left hand ring finger during an freak accident. Should be back scrimmaging in 4 weeks but limited in what preseason training he can do.

In re: to Grabau's injury, this could be a blessing in disguise. The 34yr old hasn't had a proper off season in a while, as he's played QBL in the break. Given his recent form in 10/11 and 11/12 seasons, coming into the start of the season with a bit of a break (however short) could do some good for the ageing sharp shooter. Let's hope he keeps his eye in.

just my 2 cents.
