Olympics: Boomers v Spain

Not long now.

Boomers Keys to Victory by Marc Howard
- Limit the offence of Pau Gasol by pressuring Spain's passes into the post and forcing him to pass out of quick double-teams from different spots on the floor;
- Find the Spanish shooters like Fernandez, Calderon and Navaro, particularly in transition, as no less than seven Spaniards connected on triples in their opening game;
- Shut down the Spanish fast break by pressuring the outlet passes, turning the ball handler and crashing the offensive glass;
- Get physical with the Spanish big men and squeeze them out of the paint;
- Get the confidence of players like Brad Newley and Joe Ingles up by finding them some open looks and transition buckets early on;
- Take care of the ball

Okay, you want to watch the Olympic basketball, yes, but you don't have Foxtel and Channel 9 is giving yuou the shivering quits. Fear not: the Professor has the solution provided you have broadband, a pc, and Google Chrome;

First, google 'expat shield' and download the software. Install it. Your computer now thinks you are an expat Brit homesick for the BBC.

Next, go on to the BBC, click on their Olympic game coverage. You then choose your sport and away you go - complete total unbroken stream of the game.

I'm watching China v Russia as I write this and I'm waiting for the Australia Spain game to start.

Thoughts from the half

Delly is developing into a great player.

Ingles is def. NBA material.

Patty needs to remember that the best part of his game is transition and drives to hoop. As Gaze said the Boomers were looking their best when he was on the bench as they are able to get it through more hands in the offense. should be a good 2nd half.would like to see a better 3pt percentage and for Andersen or Maric to finish inside.

Reply #372769 | Report this post

Boomers
13/33 2pt FG
2/11 3 pt FG
No FT's is a worry.

Spain
10/27 2pt FG
3/9 3pt FG
8/11 FT's...

Gotta keep them out of Offensive boards...
Ingles has really raised his game and I believe NBA teams will look at him.

I wish Delly's shot was dropping believe it or not he usually makes those silly floaters off the one step.

Both Mills and Delly need to improve their shooting.

The rebounding is crazy out of our hands. We need Maric to beast in this second half.

Also only 2 turnovers belonging to Newley. Lift MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delly is playing better and i think its time to throw in PC. we need to start hitting the 3 ball if we are any chance. if not Spain will walk away with this game. Mate it's SPAIN, not the Norwood Under 10s. Given the opponent, to get as close as they did was flattering. Nothing about the Boomers. Spain were on another level. NBA talent everywhere. Nothing to do with playing PC or not.

We have talent and skill deficiencies that can't get fixed in a two week long tournament. This team is 5-9 material.

I am just as disappointed as everyone else with the Boomers play and agree with most of the comments however beating Spain was never really a possibility even with Bogut as we just don't have the same depth of talent as the top 5 teams.

Sorry Anonymous have to disagree with your comment "Nothing about the Boomers spain were on another level". Yes spain lifted their intensity in the 3rd quarter and yes they are superior players then us in many ways, however if you shoot 4 from 25 odd from outside with most being open good shots, then YES it is something about the boomers. Can it be fixed with these current players, i have my doubts. We played well in many areas but 4 from 25 or whatever it ended up being. this is putting so much pressure on our bigs inside. Obviously people are expressing their frustration with our team and 1 fundamental area of the game that we are so terrible at.

Ok, two warm up games out the way, now time for the serious stuff. But seriously...no real surprises yet, prior to the games most thought the Boomers were a 50/50 chance against the boys from Brazil and expected a loss to the Spainards. Have China and Great Britain as wins and Russia as 50/50.

Lets hope Brazil drop their games against Russia, Spain and Great Britian (emphasis on hope).

Brown's had four years, not two weeks! But now is not the time for the blame game, we lost to a team we were expected to, although not quite in such embarrassing fashion, so we have to leave that behind and beat China.

We have to make top eight, that would be a disaster if we don't from this Group. Anything better is a bonus given we havent beaten a single world class team in an official tournament play since 2008.

Add to that, we are 4-16 against such opponents since Gaze retired.

Channel 9 went to the game about 2 minutes before halftime , then showed the third quarter
and didn't go back , after that .
Which you'd expect . Not a pretty sight .

Lucky for Patty he signed his extension with the Spurs before this tournament because he has looked more NBA D-league than the real show so far.

Just adding to my meaningless stats, we were something like 9-23 against the top teams from 1988-2000. I guess we are a good second tier country who has only produced two world class players (Gaze and Bogut) in that period when looking at that.

Not much defence being played by the boomers but check out the shooting of Heal. No wonder gaze is getting so frustrated with this teams shooting.

Paul would be right... theres been times where we have outplayed ourselves. but on talent alone, weve never actually ever been a top 4 team, we have been somewhere between 6-12th since forever but just had a lucky run for some time there. our very best would at most be role players on NBA teams and thats hard to swallow. but we only need Bogut, and hope that Exum turns into something, plus maybe 1 more player and we start looking like a top 4 olympic placing tewam (whether or not our talent level overall is there)

the lack of ball movement is a real concern.reckon we would have been better to keep Goorjian as coach and why does brown select PC if he was not gonna play he would of been better selecting a younger player

Casey calling ibaka "u-Baka" was so annoying and an insight into how little he follows the game.

The main problem here is that Brown didn't change anything up when Spain went on that third q tear. I'd have to disagree about the free throw situation somewhat. While Spain were favoured, there were a couple of instances where Newley took it at the rim and then faded sideways away from the contact with his finish. That's not how you attack the rim.

Some other observations:

- Delly has a major kink in his jumpshot that needs correcting.
- our defense is world class to start the game, and then dies off: what's the point of putting so much effort in if it's only going to be for a half?
- for a team who applies that kind of pressure, we need to loosen the rotation to prevent the effort on d tiring the legs out from underneath our shooters.
- still see absolutely zero swagger on the offensive end from anyone except ingles
- this team is on par offensively with the cairns taipans. Maybe worse. It's like watching a middling college team who simply cannot score from anything except a well executed set play.
- why don't we run any pick and rolls? Why is the pick and roll not taught properly to young Aussies? We have multiple options and combos to run pick and rolls all day.

Can we start a John Casey drinking game

Drink when:

He calls a dunk a "flush"
Someone gets a shot to "stick"
Someone misses - therefore their shot doesn't "tumble"

I'm sure there is way more

Don't complain about Casey - I remember when Brian Taylor (AFL great and sometime basketballer)commentated NBL with Drewey.

All Taylor could say was that he wanted to see more biffo, and that was the only thing that ever got him excited about the game.

Reading all these posts, its starting to reflect soccer in AUS. Lots of comments about Brown stepping in and not working well, does not know the players etc. We have bad skills etc, cant run plays etc. I take thew wide view how can we be competitive internationaly when basketball in Australia is going backwards. Like soccer the game needs to be financial have strong junior programs developing kids into world class athletes with the basic skills etc.. both sports are in same boat. I wish AFL was an international game as they have it all sorted from the ground up. Like them or hate them other sports need to have a strong national body setting (or commission)setting the agenda.

I think we showed in this game that at best, we can compete and maybe upset a team such as Spain on our day. Our defense is right up there, although we seemed to drop off in the 3rd...

As others have said, prior to the games nobody really expected us to beat Spain, and we managed to keep the margin respectable in the end.

Where we are really struggling is on offence, where at times we are impotent. The 3-ball continues to hurt badly.

I echo the sentiments of many others,someone liek PC could have helped in both games to date. Why include him in the team for 3 point shooting and not use him when we need him?

We also seem to not use David Andersen effectively. In the game against Brazil we went to him in the second half and he delivered. We have really not gone to him again since.

Mills and Ingles look like our man most capable to contribute offensively, but both have really yet to break a game open but will have a few more chances yet.

Delly continues to get more minutes as he is the only guy on this team that knows how to run a team and get others involved. Some of his creativity on offence has been great - but we need to run more pick and rolls with him and Baynes in particular as they seem to have clicked.

So much to say, but in essence, we all new the Brazil game was going to be 50/50. We all knew the Spain game was unlikely, so now we move into the games we SHOULD be expected to win against China and GB, and then the 50/50 against Russia.

I'm not counting my chickens just yet as we have yet to win a game in these Olympics, but a win against China and GB will mean we finish 4th in our group at worst, and a follow up win against Russia will see us 3rd and avoid USA.

I just want to make sure we finish in the top 4 in our group first and foremost. A game against USA I can live with if we finish 4th, as at least we finish top 8 which many people would have accepted prior to the games and a chance to still finish 5th. But a game against the USA is also a chance for guys like Delly, Ingles, Baynes, Andersen and Maric to show their worth against NBA stars and increase their chances of gaining interest from NBA teams.

But we need to win our next two games...lets just focus on China.

I'm not going to discuss coaching just yet and will leave that to after the games.

Mick you say that Delly has a major kink in his jump shot. I admit it looks awkward but he usually gets the job done. As college players Delly has the better fg% from his latest year that Mills who looks brilliant yet can't sink quicksand at the moment.

There wasn't any evidence in that game that says we could beat Spain on our day, they didn't even play Navarro!

Plus Marty Clarke is there WTF. These coaches along with swimming need to not pick on old name payers. There are new younger players , late developers, who need to be considered for the future in many of our aust sports. Clarke loves his boys like caddie and creek but don't just pick em on name. THINK outside the square!
