Anthony Petrie signs with 36ers for 2 years

updtaed thread title

From the NBL twitter

The @Adelaide36ers will announce a "new Australian recruit and an overseas pre-season tournament the team will be involved in" today

You would think it is either Gibson or Petrie.

I'm going with Petrie.

I hope it is one of them! My guess would be Gibson, but only because channel 10 had a short bit about a potential signing last night.
They said something along the lines of the Gibson signing will be finalised today and Petrie should be done later in the week.

Hawks - Already have Rhys & Demos for their Aussie back court. They want a import PG (as always).

Breakers - Waiting for Cedric Jackson. If he gets picked up by an NBA team then he wont return. If not he will return. Gibson can't wait around for a month or two for this outcome.

Tigers - Already have their back court wrapped up

Kings - Wrapped up

Wildcats - Again, wrapped up

Taipans - Back court wrapped up. Want to use their 10pts for a 2nd import (4 - 5)

Crocs - Only other team that could have signed him, but never made contact as Woolpert wants a import PG again. The only team that "didn't want him".. as you say.

So that leaves Adelaide.

If the argument is that the recruiting of imports isnt good enough, then perhaps horrible record aside, the coaches aren't the right people for the job. No reason you cant have Gibson Schenscher and an import aswell... But card the 6ers have decided to play and will have to go along with it.

Great news is he has signed for 2 seasons with an option for a third. Finally we look like we have a stable team for a couple of seasons.

http://www.nbl.com.au/teams/36ers/news/article/article/2012/july/petrie-joins-adelaide/

The Adelaide 36ers have secured former Gold Coast Blaze player Anthony Petrie for the next two seasons with an option for a third.

The 203cm big man comes to Adelaide after having a successful season at the Gold Coast Blaze averaging 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Anthony is known as a hard working player who can move out of the paint and hit shots from long range.

Adelaide 36ers Chief Executive Officer Leeanne Grantham said that it is wonderful to have Anthony Petrie on board.

"Anthony has a great reputation throughout the league and we are really pleased to have him at Adelaide for at least the next two seasons."

“The Club is focusing on filling the remainder of our roster and we hope to have further announcements in the coming weeks.”

The Adelaide 36ers pre-season started this morning, which began the team's crusade to make finals.

The team will be alternating weights, swimming and court work throughout the next few weeks.

Adelaide’s newest recruit Anthony Petrie said that he is excited to begin pre-season with his new team.

“I met my new team mates this morning and I am looking forward to getting to know them better on court as well as off the court.”

The Adelaide 36ers have a tough pre-season, with the team being invited to tour China in a four team series in early September.

“The team will be playing five games in Shenzhen and Zhongshan against two Chinese teams and Greek team Panioniaos B.C.” said Leeanne Grantham.

Prior to the team heading to China, fans can see the team in action against Nicholls State University on Saturday August 4 at Adelaide Arena for the 7.00pm tip off.

Good signing, Petrie has a lot of upside. Will be a lot happier if and when they sign Gibson.
I know they may have been restricted on times available, but playing against Nicholls State at 7pm on saturday the 4th is a great time to have a game for all those senior basketball players....Rules out about 200 players who have games that night themselves.

Well done to the club and welcome to Anthony. Petrie seems to be the mobile big paul has spoken of Adelaide needing a few times over the last season or two.

Also comes for at least a couple of years and provides some options should the Weigh experiment not prove eventually successful or Johnson is lured OS, etc.

Should make for a versatile line-up across most positions.

very glad to have petrie.

alot of weaknesses in our recent history have been corrected.

i reckon this is a really strong rebounding team with schensh, johnson, petrie, weigh and creek.

if we add gibbo than we will be able to put a very strong defensive team on the floor with petrie creek and gibbo.

the one thing ive said is that i want one pure 3pt shooter like ng to add to that line-up.

I agree Phil now we want a pure 3 point shooter to add to this tall strong line up we have now Petrie on board have lots of flexibilty and surely provide a greater inside prescence.
Whether or not Gibson signs I hope we can have at least 1 import to add a bit of excitement into team .
and hopefully can do a little better with our choice of import.
Sorry but with all these positives we still have those 2 as our coaches

Schenscher (9)
DJ (8)
Weigh (7)
Gibbo* (10)
Cadee (5)

Petrie (8)
Creek (4)
Crosswell (6)

47 Points with 3 spots to spend 23 points on. Potentially 2 imports could be added to this line up. UMM. Yep

So the 2 spot will either be Gibbo or a stud import

PG is covered
3 is covered
4 is covered
Weakness at 2 and arguably 5. having said that the big rotation should be fine if someone goes down ( Weigh to spend some time at the 4)

next few weeks will be real interesting.

igotmadskills - That's my favourite thing too.

DJ - 3 years
Schesch - 2 years (+1 options)
Petrie - 2 years (+1)
Cadee - 2 years
Creek - 2 years

Crosswell - 1 year
Weigh - 1 year to go (Think he has a 1 year option too though?)

Hopefully if we do get Gibson, it will be for at least 2 years as well.

You look at both Perth and NZ, both their teams have changed very little each year for the last 3 years.

Well done to the Sixers for getting another quality player on board with Petrie... Gonna be hard getting everyone minutes, but that's a pretty great problem to have...

No reason you cant have Gibson Schenscher and an import aswell...

I'd say that there's something in place called the salary cap that might stop that happening? DJ re-signing, Big Red coming in, Petrie wouldn't have been too cheap, plus luring Weigh last season and then throwing Gibbo in on top of that with some young signings that would have been at least a little bit paid for potential in advance to get there there and people are kidding themselves if the Sixers are legitimately able to afford anything over a SEABL level import...

It would be great seeing an all-Australian team though...

So no one would've gone an import over Petrie? The points and some cap were left to potentially do that. Curious to know peoples reasons as to why this was the best option. It is what it is now, so may as well get behind the team, but not sure this is what i would've done with my recruiting.

I agree with all of you about a 3pt specialist, but I would rather have a highflying dunk machine import than Gibbo at SG. If we sign Gibbo the 36ers are instant champs. The NBL needs good, strong players all around different teams, it needs competition.
I like the look of this team alot throw in a cheap back to basket import big and I would buy my first membership
C Schenscer/Import
PF DJ/Petrie
SF Creek/Weigh
SG Import/Ng
PG Cadee/Crosswell
DEFENSE:B+
OFFENCE:A
REBOUNDS:A+
We have a very exciting team.

If anything, I'd rather have Petrie + import over Gibson + import. It's hard to get good big imports, much less ones who are as mobile as Petrie is. Having a guy who can matchup on the vukona's, worthos and Wilkos of the league is going fix one of the Sixers most glaring weaknesses in recent seasons. While Gibson is a good player, IMO it is a lot easier to find a decent import guard than big man.

Really happy w the Sixers recruiting this off season. I'm more excited about the Sixers chances this season than I have been in ten years! Good work Leanne, Marty et al!

"Why don't people want Gibson? He is one of the best Pg's in Austrlia"

Yep and that ain't saying much!

Just to clarify though, I don't think anyone is saying they don't want Gibson. It's more that there could be other better fits given the guards we've already signed.

Gibbo brings good defence and a physical presence the Sixers have lacked for a long time. He also will do a solid job of knocking down open shots and handling the ball.

But he doesn't really address our lack of firepower in the backcourt. We don't have a guard who can create a shot for themselves one on one, Crosswell is the team's only reliable penetrator and we have only solid, not great perimeter shooters.

IF we could find an import who can provide those things, I'd rather see the money spent on him than Gibson.

In the more likely scenario that we can't find that gun import though, I'll be pretty satisfied with Gibbo.

I'd be cool with Gibson over an import if the back up SG is a flat out shooter like a Darren Ng type.

I would also like to see a Vasiljevic/Mottram type fill the back up centre spot.

If we did sign Gibson how about warren as our import he can shoot the 3. I no he's not the big 2 guard that people are looking for. He wouldn't have to run the team like he was ment to last yr. just shoot which he can flat out do. Having Petrie and Luke help with his so so d.

Warren is the sort of player that would be useful, but what money are you going to get these imports with? Besides Crosswell, every player is either a starter or signed to work towards starting in the future. That adds up.

If we get Gibson too, we've added two starting-calibre players from a top four team.

Only chance would be an absolute budget import, and even then I think Marty's indicated that all-Aussie is the plan.

Barely going to be enough minutes for the front court as it is. Can't wait for the "stop playing everyone like they're children" comments and wonder if they'll be from the same people who look at this lineup and expect imports as well.

Best bet for an Import would be a Massingale (spelling) rom SEABL cause he would be cheap, not sure if he fits the bill as a perimeter shooter though.

Where does this leave Darren ng? I don't see a reliable, consistent 3 point shooter on this team. Plus he's an Adelaide boy. Not that that means everything but given the chance, he's a handy backup.

Tassie Twins want to show the world what a powerful coaching force they really are by taking an all aussie team to the GF and winning, for the first time ( if you call naturalised players "imports" ) or for the first time since 1979 if you don't.

Anyway , the two of then have found that imports tend to turn up with too much attitude and willfulness ( read as "experience" and "previously-well-coached") to be prepared to do what they are told, rather than "learn" and "develop" ( read as "play a different position" and "STFU" ).

I expect a good season in 2012-13 and a great season in 2013-14 .

Schenscher/Backup Big
Johnson/Petrie
Weigh/Creek
Gibson/Backup Shooter
Cadee/Crosswell

I think thats a tough team to guard. Dont forget we have a continous low post presence with Schensh, DJ and Petrie.

Our guards need to defend and initiate the offense and knockdown open shots. If Gibson can do that at International level, he can cover that role in NBL.

Lineup gives us plenty of flexibility.

As a fan I commend the 36ers front office. Huge offseason where we have:
Resigned DJ
Resigned Creek
Let Ballinger, Warren and Simpson walk (all correct IMO)
Signed Schensher
Signed Cadee
Signed Petrie
Signed Gibson (its locked in)

With Crosswell and Weigh we have a very solid 8 man rotation, only skillsets will fill out from here, such as a Big post defender/hustler and a shooting stretch 2/3 guy.

Well done Sixers!!! Cant wait for the first preseason game!

I agree, Schenscher, Johnson, Petrie, Weigh and Creek will take the 120 frontcourt minutes and offer a lot of different looks. With the two last spots obviously a knockdown shooter and then Id take the best young prospect they can get their hands on.

Cant disagree with either of you on the big call.
I guess I would get a development big that would be happy with up to 10mins a game that could step in if there are injuries or foul trouble.

1 big goes down, the other gets in early foul trouble we are a bit exposed. Thats the only reason I have a big there. 1 good knockdown shooter means you have the backcourt covered with 3 able to handle and all being able to play together at once.

Like the idea of a Vet in one of those spots though...a guy thats great at practice and setting the selfless tone etc.
