Think you have it wrong- its the Adelaide Cup day originally in May now in March looking at moving back. Queens Birthday wont move.

AdelaideNow.com.au

It also included a recommendation of shifting SA's Queen's Birthday public holiday from June to May, and the Adelaide Cup returned to May

So they would move the June long weekend to May still call it the Queens Birthday (because we all know June isnt her birthday either), but also happen to have a horse race on that day.

Sounds feasible, I could never understand why we have long weekends in winter anyway - it is usually too cold or wet to do anything worthwhile.

Move the Adelaide cup to the October Labor day and use it as a good 3200m warm up race for the Melbourne Cup. It could become the first big race of the Spring Carnival.

Great idea Skip.

Years ago the SAJC complained that May was too wet.

Skip, what you are proposing doesn't make sense. 3200 is incredibly taxing on a horse. Add the 9 hour float ride one way from Melbourne and it's ridiculous, especially considering there are more than enough quality lead up races in Melbourne for the cup. The way the carnival is set up in Victoria with the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Mackinnon etc is a perfect lead up to the Melbourne Cup. There doesn't need to be any tinkering with it.

Adelaide's raving carnival has always been around May, then for no good reason they moved the cup to March hoping they would get better weather, which they have, but at the same time, the race doesn't fit in the racing calendar and hence the quality of the race has diminished (gone down to a Group 2 race when it previously was a G1).

The Cup fits in May perfectly. Fits in well with the Sydney and Brisbane racing calendars and gets a better quality field. The sooner it gets moved back to May, the better.

Then change the Distance of the Adelaide Cup to 2400m.

But don't continue to change the days of public holidays to suit the SAJC.

Skip, why would the Melbourne horses come down to Adelaide for the Adelaide Cup (at potentially 2400m) in October when in Melbourne at the same time there is the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and the Mackinnon? The racing calendar fits for the cup to be in May.

A public holiday in May would fit quite well too actually...

Chewy316 - They would come here for the same reason they go to any race. To win money. Find a good sponsor combined with some funding from the government and make it a 3 million dollar race. Capitalize on the tourism money that could come into the state over the long weekend.

As for moving the public Holiday, how does it fit quite well? We already have 4 public holidays over March/April, I'm pretty sure most people would prefer one in June to May otherwise we go 4 months without one.

Sorry i did mis read that HOWEVER what would happen to the multitude of Junior sport events over the June Long weekend ie Classics etc. I know I would rather have a day off in June rather than May- we have Easter and Anzac day etc around April and June is a great break. Thoughts?

State Champs could return to a few games Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Sunday Night Semis and crossovers and then the finals and position playoffs on the Monday. Would be better than playing Thursday Night, Friday Night and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Same amount of days used but the finals and position play offs get played on Monday Morning when people are a little more rested.

Does make the big Melbourne Tournaments hard.
