In 2008, after the nervous start to the tournament, Goorjian had the Boomers functioning very well on offense. In those last few pool games Goorjian was getting the most of the talent he had, with most of the team able to hit the outside shot at a very good clip when they didn't go with an inside target. Anstey is probably right when he said that the 2008 team was better than the 2000 team.
2012 is a totally different siutation. We are now under Brown using his NBA-inspired San Antonio playbook (has any team apart from the hyper-talented US managed to succeed with NBA-style structures in international ball?), we have numerous core players coming off sub-par seasons (most notably Newley, Barlow, and Maric), we are without our best player who provides a genuine inside target offensively and holds down the middle defensively, the player with the best form in Europe has not yet even played a game with the team this year yet, and now we are relying on an unproven and inexperienced player to run the offense (Delly instead of Bruton).
If Brown can pull it off, I'll give him plenty of credit, but we've got a lot more "ifs" that need to go our way to make it through to the medal round, much more than most other teams in the tournament.
Against Spain I hope we are at least competitive, keep improving, and give players more confidence heading into the tournament. (I was going to list who needs the confidence, but I realise that it's most of the team: Newley, Barlow, Ingles, Maric after not getting minutes in Europe, Andersen because he has underperformed in previous major tournaments, and Delly because he will be taking on a big role at a young age).
