Vic Metro clean sweep U16 Nationals

Vic Metro win gold in both the Men and Women last night in Tamworth. Beat Queensland South in both contests. Excellent job from the Vics. Nobody can dispute that they do a great job in that State of coaching and developing athletes.

Congratulations !

Well done to Vic Metro.

The Nationals has a Metro and Country (or north/south) representative team from all larger states and one from the smaller states and territories, including our "7th state", making a total of 14 teams.

Vic Metro have dominated for a while, so I guess we will now be able to listen to why they should have two Vic Metro teams in the top level competition, oh sorry, that only happens in SA District Basketball and clubs wanting extra div 1 representative spots.

I think Tasmania are showing a steady climb as well in results.

Vic metro have such a big pool of good talent they could put together 2/3 Vic metro teams that would be stronger than 7/8 of the 14 teams...all cones down to size of talent pool an development pathways

Absolutely plays a part, but it also makes it ultra competitive for players and coaches to be given a guernsey to represent their State. 'Iron Sharpens Iron' and that's probably why we see reasonably strong and well rounded teams come out of Vic Metro each year. While fortunate in that respect, there would surely be incredible pressure on the Vics each year to win it. Far tougher to play with a target on your back and win when you're expected to win.

Tasmania has seen a steady climb for sure and this year's results would suggest Queensland South have also taken a step up. NSW Metro are usually around the mark too.

Basketball is the winner at the end of the day.

I think our results highlights where we are at with sport in our state.

Poor Governance after a promise of better things to come after the death of BASA

Poor comp structure that has a Under 23 program that is "social" at best below Div 1

Facilities that are old, cold, poor equipment and not one cent from Rudd money into stadiums

SASI funding gone

State teams that are now below par

ABA programs still eating juniors monies with a season that is too short for a major league sport.

Victoria has a slogan " on the move"

Dandenong 15 courts
State Basketball Centre
Etc etc
Plus Sportslink stadiums to be used on Friday and Saturdays

WA has a new $40million dollar centre

Is it time to "start again" and get new structure and administration?

Reduce the number of clubs?
Make ABA salary cap NIL and play 27 weeks
Bring U 20 and make the gap less from U18 to U23

If we don't re think, we will slip further down the list

Under 16 boys finished 9th this week.

How many alarm bells do you need to ring before you change things for the better

The incumbert boys coach has finished 9th and 10th in previous efforts. As well as a 5th last year.

Might have more to do with his performance than with the program as a whole.

Girls were unlucky to not finish top 4. And therefore to be fighting for a medal. Reasonable considering the other states would be doing as much as we are.

361, Ease up turbo. U20s boys won silver this year. U20 girls have medalled many times in the past few yrs. U18 Men finished 4th this past year U18 women silver the year in 2010, U18 men bronze that year. Have you seen any Div 1 youth league games. Suggesting it's at a social standard is hilarious. There are definately areas for improvement as there are in any organisation but it's just I'm glad it's not you calling the shots.

#068, read more carefully. he/she was not suggesting that YL div 1 games are social. That comment referred to the lower divisions.

Where have we gone wrong? We have two Tasmanians coaching the 36ers, but haven't seen the same improvements.

I'm assuming Brendan Joyce as High Performance Manager for Queensland South, had some input into the Silver medal teams.
If so, well done mate.

The problem is, Tassie's success started when an SA guy took over the program.

And we've let another good coach leave up to Qld because there were no positions here. No roles for good SA coaches in SA, so they have to take their expertise elsewhere.

Having said all of that, I actually don't think there's too much wrong with the elite level program in SA, aside from appointing 1 poor coach (out of U16-U20, I think all bar 1 are at least "OK" at their levels, but one has a poor track record that just got poorer last week). I think there are issues with bball in SA, but pointing your finger at the top without looking at what happens below is looking at it the wrong way.

haha Jack - dig as you may, the funny thing is that Victoria DO allow for more than one team from a club in division 1. Perhaps having the best teams, no matter where they are from, help contribute to their states success...

And to add on from that, the Victorian system allows any club to miss out on a division 1 spot.

They have a true grading season and allow all team to compete for a spot in the Championship grade.

Maybe if some clubs would allow true competition we would be doing better at Nationals level.

Not sure what the talent pool for this age is, as the top two teams in pool 1 beat the top teams in pool 2 by lots. Vic Metro beat Tasmania by about 50 and QLD South beat Vic Country 20 or so.

Basketball Victoria only allow a maximum of 2 teams from the same club per age group in Championship division. There have been examples of the 3rd team have qualified and the 2nd team relegated due to results.

Hey Bowtie. Spoke to SB and he said that Brendan Joyce had done an outstanding job with both the boys and girls teams and coaches for both U18s and U16s since he got there in Qld. No surprise they have had 4 final fours with 3 silvers already. Said he was one of he best coaches he had been around.Congrats to Qld!!!!

Always a great event to showcase some of the country's best talent. Don't forget Vic Country Girls went silver last year and the boys went Bronze this year, a good track record, are they on the improve or is it just expected of the state to have success...

In the boys game Vic Country went down to QLD South by 30 points but that was not a true indication of the talent of the players, more so the lack of focus, confidence and self belief in the players and coaches!

Here is a question, how come Vic Metro uniforms have no use of the word metro like all other states do? Are they representing all of the state with the Big V displayed as it appears on the singlets or is this an oversight?
