R15 ABL Action

South-Mavs
Women: Mavs went on an absolute rampage for a great win last round. The only thing I could think that would get them more excited would be shopping trip in Milan. South are the unlucky ones this week as Mavs rack up more FlyBuys points on their credit card.
Men: The Mavs have been close this year, but like a pimply faced 40 year old mummy's boy working in IT and still into Star Wars and lego, are yet to score. South have had an 8 run loosing streak and with recent changes in Mavs might be set for a 9th. The Mavs have improved by about 5 ppg, which is bad news since South won by 3 last time and they have lost about 12 ppg of form IMO. South to end up 0-2 at home.

Sturt-Norwood
Women: Last round, Sturt looked like the Sturt we all love to hate and Norwood fell like a hurdler in a race with Sally Pearson. Surely Nor-would aren’t turning into Nor-could. One expects a Nor-should win, but on their home court and with a full head of steam, could those bloo baggers give Simon a pre-finals headache? Probably not, but it would be about the only time 80% of the basketball punters would be hoping for a Sturt win.
Men: Norwood are still searching for 5th spot and are chasing Woodville like a priest chasing a choirboy. Sturt have had a great run this season. The first two pitches were wild strikes, then have gone on a display rivaling Babe Ruth knocking a home run 11 from 12 times to the plate. Even with Norwood curve balls, the bases are loaded and ready for Sturt the hit the ball out of the park.

West-North
Women: The good news for Westies is they have a home game, the bad news is North have improved by about 17 since they last met. Oh well, there’s always next year.
Men: MOTR. Last time they met it was Norf by 20, but fast forward 63 days and now both these teams are pretty even. The only real difference being West seem the spread the load like a gang of wharfies spreading overtime. It's not summer until the steering wheel is too hot to hold, and while they won’t get the split, the wharfies will be turning up the heat on those poor Norffie boys. Westies to take this one in a nail biter!

Woodville-Tigers
Women: Tigereresses are the hunted with the Lady Mavs stalking them. Mission this week is to get the W to stave off the threat of losing 5th - after all the Mavs have the split! If Tom Cruise can get partial access to Suri, then sure a W is not Mission Impossible.
Men: Woodville embarrased the Tigers by 31 last time and with a finals spot on offer only the brave would tip the Tigers to create the biggest upset since David picked up a stone. If Woodies don’t snare this one they could be gifting Norwood their finals spot. I’m expecting an "In-Zane" game.

Eagles-Lions
Women: This will be a classic pre-final bonecruncher. No doubt Carla will be on the scoresheet, but will the Lionesses be the first to be tested & the Blue Army the privileged first to bag her out from the stands, or will the Eagles keep their powder dry and let her enjoy the Thunderbirds end of season trip to Bali? The Lions have the split by 3 at the moment, but have probably slipped by 6 and the Feagles have strengthened by 3. No bench cleaning tonight as the Feagles get the edge going into the finals.
Men: Will someone please clip the wings of the Feagles? Certainly not the Lions. The Feagles have too many on fire and after a great mini-run mid season, the Lions will be trying to drain Swamp Wayville while it’s full of blue and gold snappy things. Not even McGyver could get out of this one unscathered. Feagles to go past a ton for the 4th time.

Norwood men to lose and miss out on the top 5 for the first time in years. Time for a new coach?

As a supporter of one of the other nine clubs I would recommend stay with the current coach.

What instructions is he giving to his core group before the additions of the import and Lycett. What has happened to Lycett when you compare his output to minutes played in the previous year with North. Seems to me that it is not just the aging personnel in the team but also goes back to the coaching group.

But isn't the thought of Norwood missing the finals tantalising. Pity they will still be represented by the Norwood Lightning!!

Southern and Norwood are definitely two clubs who should be looking for new coaches next year. Southern just never seem to get any better, and Norwood, despite all the players who retired after last year, have underachieved.

May as well add Centrals to that list also. They haven't improved over the last few years.

Westies should have won for sure. Their import getting a foul and a TECH foul at the same time in the last 2 minutes def cost their game and put them into over time. But I'm sure they will be fighting back hard for the next few up coming games to make up for last nights disappointment.

Tigers/import shot the absolute lights out. Was ruined game though thanks to the female ref. Never seen so many non travels called for travel, yet blatant travels left to go. Not to mention the fouls she was dishing out. Apparently you can hold another player when you have hands up straight... Regardless, tigers couldn't miss and warriors just couldn't get offense going.

Next week will be a big game, shall be a good watch!

To say Norwood have underachieved is a pretty big call. To lose an entire starting front court of the quality of David Cooper, Nick Hambour and Corey Ottey as well as a handy Dan Thompson (who actually didn't play last year at all) immediately puts their backs against the wall. Add in the fact that starting guard Andrew Webber has been out for most of the season (he's played 4 or 5 games now I think) as well as 6th man Ben Howell travelling and playing only the first half of the season (if that) makes it very difficult.

The addition of import Brian Moultrie and young Matty Lycett are very, very good but also having them adjust to totally new systems with totally new teammates presents another challenge.

The side is struggling with inconsistencies and have shown that their best is very good (beating Forestville and Sturt at Wayville and Pasadena) and their bad can be awful. Probably a little early to call them underachievers and calling for the coaches head after a pretty big loss of key personnel is definitely unwarranted.

R15 has been a pearler.

Mens
Mavs have cracked the seal and got a win.
Warriors have set themselves up for a must win game next week
Lions gave the Eagles a very big shock and basically gifted them the game in the last 2 minutes.
Norwood got Sturt and have pinched 5th spot
West-North to OT, but Norf got 26 Q4 points to make it happen.

Womens
West gave North a scare outscoring them 11 points in the first half
Sturt pushed Norwood
Carla actually suited up
Tigeresses secured 5th spot (??)
Mavs coming home pretty hard

Oh, did I mention Carla suited up?

West up by 13 with 2:46 to go - up by 10 with 2:00 to go. North have 2 fouled out. How did West coaches let that slip? Two brains on the bench outdone by one on the court!!

The female ref umpiring woodville game advised a coach a few weeks ago she will only call travels if the player gains an advantage!! Last time I checked the rule book it said nothing about personal interpretations and opinions on how a game should be called, if you see it blow your god dam whistle and call it you precious bunch of ..........

Also who is the genius that chose the colour of their tops, the BLACK, clashes with at least one club!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give them green shirts for crying out loud

Anon 05, that's called the advantage/disadvantage rule. So many players carry the ball these days but because there is no disadvantage, there is no call.... Same with travels.

I would have thought not being called for an illegal travel or carry WAS a disadvantage to the defending team?

rules are rules, you carry the ball or travel, then call it, same with fouls

Reply #370425 | Report this post

The basketball rule book states that contact is not necessarily a foul
It states that a advantage must be made
No one actually likes a game of basketball where the game stops all the time for every small change of the pivot foot or for small, insignificant contact

That's my opinion anyway

Also a carry is only when the ball is clearly held from below and used to carry the ball past a defender
Does not happen often in ABA

The issue is you have multiple people calling multiple different schenarios and therefore getting mu;tiple different calls even in the one game due to flow and 'management' (note cheating) in any one game.

And this is why you get crowds and coaches yelling at the ref's, because of the huge inconsistancies.

Maybe some of these refs need players to throw the ball at their head... Then they can interpret if they are being used as a part of the court to bounce the ball or just getting a ball thrown at their head...

I would qualify that the West women are good led by their coaching staff who take things in their stride.

The men and their supporters bleat about everything it is never their fault, it is the venue, the hot dogs, the traffic, but above all it is always the referees fault.

Ricey you make comments on refs like you play, badly.

those two players wouldnt have been fouled off if they actually called the foul on the player that fouled (i.e Pero) everytime he fouled it was dished to the player next to him

but i agree west screwed themselves over in that game, even with the tech they let north get back in the game

anon,

Were you at the game? You speak as themselves as West so I assume you are not a West person. So perhaps a North person. Not sure a North person would say that. So were you there or are you really a West supporter.

Why did West lose:

1. Import got teched. Why put yourself in that position - just walk away.
2. Coaches were ineffective late in the game. Surely it is time for Mike McKay to step up from U23 YL.
3. Last time I looked the Refs don't actually shoot the ball. 2 from 10 in overtime from West v 5 from 6 for North 20% v 83%.
4. Blake went "MIA" when the game had to be won

When the game had to be won North stepped up and West didn't

in the last 2 mins after the tech and in OT they went down the court and chucked up shit
maybe it will open their eyes and they will realise they arent a team that will go out and beat everyteam out there with ease
