Origins of the "microwave" tag in basketball
What does it mean when a basketballer is nicknamed 'microwave' & which NBA player wore this tag?

I don't know the origin of the nickname but Vinnie Johnson of the Pistons had that handle.
It means they could "turn it on" with the flick or a switch.
Also means that when they're hot, THEY'RE HOT! Otherwise, they're ice cold.
I think it was Andrew Parkinson who had that nickname from South East Melbourne Magic.
Tad Dufelmeier from the Cannons had it.
Stood on one spot and went around in circles.
Poor D.
NBA: Vinnie Johnson/Mark Aguirre
Here:
Dufelmeier then Parkinson.
Instant Offense.
Very Old

I suppose you scored-on him every-time ?? or was that when he was 48yrs old with plastic knees ?
Saw him burn Graham "goldens hands" Kubank for 50+ points while holding GK to 8 once in a local game, after Kubank talked himself up too much at the AIS.
I'd say your a similar victim - bit late now for you though .-

"It was Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and the Pistons trailed the defending champion Boston Celtics two games to one. The Celtics were leading, 87-76, going into the fourth quarter and appeared well on their way to a commanding series lead. Johnson had other ideas. The Pistons scored 26 points in the fourth - and Johnson scored 22 of them, on his way to a then career-high 34 points on 16-of-21 shooting. Following the Pistons' 102-99 victory, Celtics guard Danny Ainge commented on Johnson's performance by saying, "If that guy in Chicago is the 'Refrigerator’ then Vinnie Johnson is the 'Microwave.’ He sure heated up in a hurry.""

Nice one Matt. I knew Vinnie Johnson was 'the microwave' but never knew it was Ainge who coined the phrase.
Love the Tad Dufelmeier sledge! Gotta find a way to use that in one of my social games!
How about some stories from the NBL where Tad lit everyone up and put the clamps on his opponent. oh wait there isn't any.
Make no mistake that was his nickname.

Spot on Matt Ryan - Johnson was good to watch, along with the rest of that Pistons team.
My then wife was a mad Celtics supporter and she always referred to Ainge as "that feisty white guy".

You are all bagging Dufelmeier, the only blokes with worse d than Tad were the ones he outscored - which was most of them. Had an NBA point guard pass as well.
