Kidd wins NBA Sportsmanship Award

Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks is the recipient of the Joe Dumars Trophy presented to the 2011-12 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner, the NBA announced today.

The annual award reflects the ideals of sportsmanship — ethical behavior, fair play and integrity — in amateur and professional basketball, a key focus of the league's NBA Cares program efforts. The trophy is named for former Detroit Pistons guard and Hall of Famer Joe Dumars, the award’s first recipient.

Yep just what I was thinking.

So under the current guidelines, if Ron Artest turns into Mother Teresa next season on and off the court he'd win it.

A bit torn on this one - award is meant to focus on how someone conducts themselves on and off the court. Part of the purpose of an award like this (I assume) is to encourage improvement and change over time. Not sure if previous (very serious) bad behaviour should automatically exclude a player from consideration? Critics would say the NBA endorses Kidds behaviour by giving him this award, but I don't agree with that - it's possible to seperate on thing from another

This is ad news, men who raise their hand to women are the lowest forms of life. Being a woman basher is a label that should be worn for life, the NBA lost a fan today. Jason Kidd, get your arse to Australia so you can be taught some oldschool manners.

@ Curtley - Ron Artest won the NBA's Citizenship Award last season. Winning the sportsmanship award wouldn't be out of the question...

Kidd recieveiing that award is a joke. I remember when Australia played the USA down in MElbourne and it got a bit heated thanks to Vince Carter acting like a tool. Australia then got beaten at the Olympics by Canada at the Olympics. Kidd then mad some sour comments about how he disliked Australia and was glad that Canada beat Australia. He is a first class wanka! period!
