I would say probley that the announcement is that Mat Campbell is retiring
It would be fiting to retire togther as they started, the basketball career at the Hawks

If it isnt a retirement it should be. No offense to Sav and Campbell because they can both still contribute but the Hawks need to move forward. Ideally one of them should retire and the other could stay on but off the bench to provide some leadership and experience when required.

Any chance the team will fold? It will be sad if they aren't in the league next season

0% chance the team is folding. It's either Ubaka extending, which he has said a number of times, he wants to do. Or Sav/Soup retiring at seasons end.
My money would be on Soup retiring.

Would Ubaka extending be considered a "major announcement"? I've heard/asked nothing, but I'm guessing a retirement.
Which would be a shame as I think both Sav and Campbell could come off the bench and are still serviceable, especially on their nights.
(Not sure if many realise, but Sav is actually older than Soup.)

I think in a stronger team both players could be used well off the bench but the Hawks rely to much on both of them to be able to do this.
Well done to both of them if they do retire both have had good career's over the years.

Saved the Hawks. Massive career at the one club.
"The time is right. I've had an amazing playing career here with the Hawks and had the honour of representing my country, but it’s now time for me to step aside and open up the door for a new generation of Hawks to lead us in the years ahead." Mat Campbell said.He should be proud of what he's achieved.

He deserves congratulations not only for his great career and contribution to the Hawks organization but for having the class to put the club first and retire gracefully

Agree with what 'Mystro' said above and can't really add much more.

A true ambassador to both the club and the NBL. Stuck through tough times and I hope he has a great game against Adelaide to fairwell his career infront of his home fans

Without Soup there would be no Hawks. That simple. For that reason he should be NBL Hall of famer & the home court should be re-named to Mat Campbell or Soup court, just like Adelaide did with Maher.
timely retirement, I only remember him being 'old'.. although hes probably only in his 30's? anyways.. i dont remember him being a boomer?? when was this? all I can say is for the games ive seen him in hes been serviceable congratulations on the long career and knowing when your times up...

Mat Campbell, in an era of pro sports where the lure of bigger money means loyalty to a club often comes off 2nd best, has shown that things like loyalty aren't dead and buried.
Campbell, like those before him including Andrew Gaze and our own Mark Davis and Brett Maher, has shown the kind of loyalty to a single club that should be commended because unlike the 3 I mentioned he often played on a Hawks team that struggled for results (although he did win an NBL championship in 2001) and I wouldn't doubt he had bigger offers from around the league that would have been very tempting. But to his personal credit he stayed loyal to Wollongong.
Congratulations to MC on a great career and here's hoping he's not going to be lost to the NBL in retirement though I doubt the Hawks wouldn't want to keep him there in some sort of capacity.
What's the bet for his final home game they draw over 5K to the WIN Ent Cent? He deserves at least that from the Hawks fans he's been loyal to since 1996.

Great career but it'll be a good decision for him to retire.

one of my favorite non 36er players, great guy done more for the game in wollongong then we will probably ever know,
glad i was at the last hawks game here to see him run around one more time and hit a few of his trade mark three's
best of luck in the future, thanks for the memories,
as someone above said, he deserves the same honor as maher got with us

Wollongong wouldn't have a team now if it wasn't for Mat Campbell.
That pretty well sums up what he means to Wollongong and the league in general.
Wollongong's equivalent to Brett Maher.

Congratulations to Matt Campbell on a fantastic career. A true class act, and I concur with the above sentiments: Wollongong's equivalent to Brett Maher.
