What's Hot/What's Not

What's Hot:

  • Kevin Brook's coaching style, the cap is a coaching accessory that is pretty much endangered on the sideline, good to see it's addition to the ABL sidelines.
  • And talking of KB, I like the way Woodville tries to dictate the pace, trying to push the ball on every possession and get the shots up unlike Sapwell's boring Norwood style, now if they can only shoot above 40%. Doing well with a team full of lesser talents in the Central ABL.
  • Luke Mapunda, the guy actually played pretty well to my shock, with his passing much improved. A couple of good extra passes for 3s and one excellent pass from the post in the 1st and 2nd quarters. Played 30 minutes for 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists with no airballs to my horror.
  • Hong Kong legend dvd range, all the classics being released
  • Paul Bauer, would Sturt fans agree this is his best season for a long, long time? Hit some huge 3s, including a huge 3 in transition in the 4th. 18 points with 5/9 3PT, 6/11 FG and 1/2FT. 5 rebounds, 3 assists in 40 minutes.
  • Oscar Forman for throwing down a flush on the break in the first and a blazing ally in the 4th. Oh yeah he also had 23 and 16 on 8/15 FG, 3/5 3PT and 4/4 FT in 42 minutes. Only 1 assist, I suggest the ball-hog learn to pass every now and then.
  • Beat Takeshi's range on DVD, everyone must check out Hana-bi.
  • The current Slam magazine, with Mike Dunlop, Rick Bruson and Andrew Bogut.

What's Not:
  • Now I know clubs run on volunteers, and I am grateful for their work, but when did it become official club policy to let six years old girls to select the music to be played? Last week it was Delta Goodrem, this week it was Ashlee Simpson's "La La". Couldn't get any worse could it?
  • The Woodville courtside announcer, the guy was actually pretty good all day, but I didn't like the fact that he made judgements of such subjective issues as player performances. If Andrew Puddifoot was "sensational" with 3/20 shooting I think nothing short of fatally wounding your teammates would qualify you for an average performance in this guys view.
  • Oh wait a minute, they played Hilary Duff "Our lips are sealed".
  • Brenton Higgins is right, the Dome is very dirty, (not quite as much as Hambour's mouth).
  • Jessie "player hater" McCartney.
  • Wait a minute, I think Simple Plan "Welcome to my life" was played just to increase the depression factor.
  • By the way, once again mostly loved the guy's work, but having an announcer clearly releasing a "pfft" sound to a refs call is a bit of a shock (in the guys defence I don't think he meant to do it, just forgot to put the mic away from his mouth in general play).
  • Guy Sebastion's "Out with my Baby." By this point my ears were bleeding.
  • Todd Gower fouling out in 13 minutes with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 turnovers and 3 steals (with one big drive and dunk).
  • Missy Higgins got played towards the end of the game, by this time I was just suicidal.

Find of the week:
  • Find of the week returns for Gary Birmingham. Never heard of the player before but 20 points on 8/17 shooting, 4/8 3PT in 30 minutes while the rest of his team shoots 32% makes me remember his name. Woodville fans, what's his story?

Flop of the week:
  • Andrew Puddifoot, 3/20 shooting for 11 points in 44 minutes. This guy stunk more than the Bolivar sewage plants.

Celebrity sightings
  • Brad Newley, you know a real celeb unlike the usual losers I chuck on this list. Relative to Brad Newley no other 'celebrities' were present.

My additions:

Hot:

  • Jye Watson's 50 points at Starplex -- you don't need to see it in person to know it was a big performance
  • Brad Newley finally fires up for 35, but where are all of these turnovers coming from?

Not:
  • ABL games spread over three days, but not being able to go to any of them

interesting point - the courtside announcer "AIR BALL !" for a sturt miss and nothing for a warrior flop over

is their no code of honor amongst these men of the mic?

if that is the case - can the visiting team bring their own pa and shout the house down as well?

Gary BIRMINGHAM has spent the last 3 years in the Reserves playing some awesome basketball. Last winter, he took out the MVP for the team and was top scorer in the Reserves Grade. He has been on the end of the line behind WILSON, VANDENBERGH, TODD, GRAVES and Darren NG, so his opportunity to play ABL has been limited. It is no surprise he is doing so well this year because he has enormous all round talent and matched it with the above at every training session.

Hot - Kosmider, 12 assists. One short of thedoctor's prediction.

thedoctor predicting Panther's 5 fouls. But hey, that prediction didn't take much forsight!

Hot - players from several clubs socialising/drinking together at The Oxford Saturday night. Good to see. Many regulars from Hoops SA revealed their alias. No more semi-anonymous posting!

even tho there were 'circumstances' you cant abondon your team then come back and it expect it to be the same. B/ball is a team sport, everyone has to earn their spot, and i think with a POTW performance against North J.Warhurst earnt his.

5 - 5 from mavs still played 17+ minutes, what he was told aside, i think you'd be happy with that.

Madgen played 24, BD 37, Becis 34, Jason 30 Minutes.

I dont know why coaches coach how they do. Must be for a reason, maybe that's why Richard is coaching ABL, not a lowly div 4 team, or something.

I didn't see the Mavs game but I saw Warhurst ball up North at hillcrest a couple weeks ago. He is baller.

I don't think you can attack Richard for making his coaching decisions, things in a game don't always go to plan, so maybe his intentions were to give Joel ct time, but the game didn't go that way. I don't know, wasn't there, but i think that is between Joel and Richard, not for us to criticise on a chat site.

Jye got 50, that's hot.

I agree tunes at ball at the moment... not.

I think you were harsh on Oscar DC. He would have been in line for about another 6 assists from memory, but the player he passed to decided to make better position, cancelling the assist.

If that was you who came up and got the boxes at the end of the mens game, you could have of at least said hi, snob!

Heck, I won't start on music. Have been listening to Cold Chisel's greatest hits over the past few days .....

Gary Birmingham? Old Bull said it best. Young fella who's been plying his trade patiently in the Reserves, waiting behind Graves, Wilson, Vandenbergh, Ng, Meakin ..... and now he's got his chance. Great shooting, very good attitude and humility to boot.

Keep it up, Glitter!

Whats Hot

Gary B? Na hes a well deserving player. I used to play against him many seasons ago U16/U18/U20 and i would have to say id rather him hit a shot on me then some of the other players that 70% of there game is ball and 30% of that is trash. Everytime ive played against him or watched his team he always seems to keep his mouth shut and focused on the game,

Well done. I would take my hat of to you if i was wearing one.

Yogee, you can't give credit to Oscar for nearly getting asists, or say that his team mates should have shot it instead of making better position. That's the point of an assist, to put a team mate in the best shooting position.

one assist means one assist.

Gary is well deserving of his recognition this week. He is one of the only players that plays 100% ball and not talk shit all game. He goes out and gets on with the game. A lot of natural talent.

The music really is shit. The stuff they are playing doesn't get the crowd involved only teeny boppers. They need to play things that are going to bring the crowd into the game, not make them want to go home.

thedoctor, Yogee wasn't really suggesting Oscar get credit for "almost assists", but that he shouldn't be called a ball hog for not being credited for many. I think he only had 15 attempts in that Woodville game (first game under 20 FGA for the season).

"He would have been in line for about another 6 assists from memory, but the player he passed to decided to make better position, cancelling the assist."

What does that mean? Its putting some blame on team mates for Oscar not getting assists. ie - they could/should have shot it, but instead, decided to put the ball on the floor etc etc.

The art of the assist is getting the ball to the player in the best position. Looking at the amount of times Oscar shoots (and makes it!) versus his assist count, he doesn't pass it up much. In saying that, Oscar can usually be seen as the best scoring option, so why pass?

Not a crticism of Oscar, just questioning the concept of the 'almost-assist'.
