The remainder of last nights games:
Men:
5pm
NSW 78 d QLD 74
After QLD lost to WA Men by 20, this game was looking like becoming a one way street. This was not the case. A very even first quater saw QLD men lead by 1 at the break after nailing a number of threes however NSW was banging the ball down low for alot of baskets in the paint. The lead extended to 37-31 at half as now QLD started to find keyway buckets whilst still maintaining some good mid range shooting. NSW becoming less efficient within the restricted area. The third quater saw NSW wipe away QLD's lead, by again going back inside to find easier buckets, as QLD stuck with the inside outside gameplan, however had a number of less shots for the quater. NSW won the quater 24-16, to lead by 2 into the final frame. QLD still did not deviate from the plan, however NSW inside presence proved too much as they won the quater 23-21 and took a narrow 4 point win. QLD took 13 less shots, turned the ball over 9 times more (mainly the second half), and gave up +26 for points in the paint. NSW best was Chircu with 23 on 10/21 to go with 5 boards in 33 mintues, with Dumovic 6/16 for 16 points and 8 boards in 30 minutes. QLD best was Michael Demertize who had 18 points on 6/12 shooting, with his only buckets coming from 6/9 from three in 32 minutes, with Brady Rutland chipping in for 18 points on 8/18 in 25 minutes.
5pm
TAS 69 d NT 52
TAS looked to really control this game from the outset, taking an early 18-10 point lead, before an even second quater saw TAS again win the period at 20-18, with half time scores 38-28. TAS didnt look to give up this lead, shooting 47% clip for the game and dominating the rebounding contests throughout winning that 38-17. The third quater only saw NT convert 2 buckets, due to poor shot selection and good defence in patches, with TAS taking the period 14-5, and leading by 19 into the last period. NT looked to convert better, and take some better shots in the last which saw them win the period 19-17, however the margin was too large to really make in impact, with TAS walking away with a decent 17 point win. TAS best was Ben Richmond who had 32 points on 12/20 including 5/13 threes and 8 boards in 35 minutes. NTs best was Daniel Florence who has 17 points on 5/14 including 2/6 threes.
7pm
VIC 91 d ACT 53
Unfortunatley this was always going to be a one way street. However although this game only ever had one results that was going to happen, the final scoreline is somewhat surprising. It either demonstrates ACT's improvement over previous years, or VIC's weakness, as at last years U20's the VIC's played ACT in the round game and the half time score was around 90-10. ACT came out the blocks hard, and VIC looked to underestimate them, with ACT leading at the first break 19-16, before VIC turned it up a notch and dominated the second period 28-4, to go up by 21 at the half. ACT remained somewhat competitive in the second half, going down by 17 for the half and eventually 38 for the game. VIC whilst dominant were unconvincing, and rotating players, shooting a reasonable clip of 43% however struggled from deep for only 17%. VIC had multiple players score in the high teens, with the best Lucas Barker, who had 15 points on 6/12 to go with 6 boards and 5 assists. ACT's best was Reece Kaye who had 9 points, 7 boards and 5 assists in 26 minutes.
Women
530pm
NSW 73 d TAS 62
NSW took out their game with TAS, which has all but secured there top 2 finish in the pool and eliminated TAS from medal contention. NSW started strong pushing an early lead out to 14 at the break, leading 23-9 on the back of some good shooting, and forcing TAS late into the shot clock and getting below average looks. TAS played a better inside outside game in the second, and nailing some deep threes that saw them take the period 15-12 as NSW fg% dropped quickly. The third played out very similar to the second, except this time NSW again seemed to be hitting their shots, whilst TAS were still converting from deep and taking some cheap points inside, however NSW won the period 23-21 and had a 13 point lead going into the last break. TAS stuck with the game plan, however NSW stretched the defence forcing TAS to not pull the trigger on a number of threes, throwing them off their stride slightly. NSW werent as efficient inside in the fourth as TAS took the period 17-15, but NSW did enough to hold onto a comfortable double digit win. NSW best was Ellie Junod who nailed 27 points on 13/24, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 0 turnovers in only 24 minutes of play. TAS best Irini Alexiou had 6/12 for 17 points. TAS star Isabella Morgan struggled with the defence pressure, shooting 1/11, however pulled 9 boards and still contributed.
7pm
VIC 103 d NZ 49
One way traffic here, with VIC never looking in danger in this one. VIC took a 14 point lead in the first quater, before demolishing NZ in the second with a 35-5 period, taking a 44 point lead into the main break. VIC then ran some bench players for the second half, winning the third 23-9, and giving up more time for bench players, which saw NZ take the last 22-18. VIC shot at 51% from the field and NZ shot 44% however NZ had half the number of field goal attempts (90-45), and VIC forced 38 turnover to 11. VIC had 6 out of 10 players in double figures, with Shanae Greaves leading all scorers with 24 points on 12-15 in 23 minutes, and Carley Mijovic had 18 points in 7/17 and 11 boards in 21 minutes. NZ best was Josephine Stockhill who had 7 points and 14 boards in 32 minutes.
