Why can't they play zone in the NBA?
I just want to know why? Is this the reason why the USA aren't so dominant in the international leages anymore?

They can play it now i believe, it just does not suit their style of play.
The NBA is based on athleticism, iso's and flashy dunks. Things that are all nullified by the zone.
Whilst they now allow some zone to be played it will never be allowed to become widespread otherwise too many people will start to realise the NBA is the WWF of basketball.

How can they play any zone with a rule like the "defensive 3 seconds in the key" in place. Are teams over there allowed to play zone in college and school/club leagues?

Yeah Syracuse (college) has a very effective zone that they play basically all game. Pretty sure highschool and club/aau have no rules against zone...

Tassiebball, they can play zone. They will only get called for 3 seconds if they decide to play man defense. It is one or the other. Correct me if I am wrong anyone. However as others have said it doesn't suit the game there, also there is too many good shooters so zone wont be that effective.
Try using that argument in international basketball. The USA win because they run everyone off the court generally and play a fast tempo transition game and use their superior athleticism to blow teams away. If international teams can slow the game down to a half court slog the USA struggle. A perfect example was the Beijing gold medal game, yes they win but by a small margin as Spain slowed the game down at every opportunity.
The zone is becoming more and more used in the NBA, and it's proving to be very effective, it's a Miami stopper, although they're starting to destroy that even, Dallas love playing it, and the def 3 secs still apply, they still have to be within 1 metre of an offensive player, and in all respect, even at junior level players in a zone should be within a metre of an offensive player, that's how the best zones are played. FOllows the saying 'the best man defences look like a zone and the best zones' look like a man to man'.
Spain didn't slow the game in Beijing, they ran it at every opportunity.
With the limited front court shooting a zone can be very effective in the nba but the three second rule limits that by opening up holes down the middle.

the defensive 3 second rule was put in to stop teams clogging up the key way with a 2-3 zone, if a player is outside an arms length of an offensive player for three seconds in the key way a technical foul is issued for 1 shot, this removes the effectiveness of the 2-3 zone to clog the lane.
The previous post is correct. Even if your team is in a man, you can't sit in the lane and be a help defender for more than 3 seconds. You need to "defend someone" not an area.
Obviously this opens up the lane and allows for athletes to get to the rim and dunk it/make flashy plays, increase the overall spectacle of the game.
