Kings expecting 8-9k crowd tonight

NBL press release about crowds this year:

The National Basketball League is on track to record its third successive year of attendance growth on the back of a string of sell-out crowds at iiNet NBL Championship matches in recent weeks and what will be a season-high crowd tonight at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Tonight, the Sydney Kings are guaranteed to record their largest crowd of the season with more than 6,000 tickets pre-sold to see their clash with the Perth Wildcats. Club officials have advised that demand remains strong this morning and are confidently predicting a crowd of between 8,500 and 9,000 when the game tips-off at 7:30PM local time.

A crowd of that magnitude would easily surpass the largest crowd so far this season in the iiNet NBL Championship, which was 6,900 set by the New Zealand Breakers for their home game against the Kings at Vector Arena in Round Four. The Kings' previous largest crowd this season was 6,165 set in Round 13 against the Adelaide 36ers.

Crowds have generally been on the rise in the iiNet NBL Championship in recent weeks, and last night the Breakers enjoyed their third successive sell-out game at Auckland’s North Shore Events Centre as they recorded a 91-77 win over the Melbourne Tigers.

The Breakers are averaging home crowds of 3,975 this season, which is by far the highest in the club’s history. Their previous best season attendance average was last season when they won their maiden title, averaging 2,994 people per game (including playoffs).

The Tigers themselves have also been enjoying strong support this season from fans, with the State Netball Hockey Centre (AKA 'The Cage’) recording its fifth sell-out crowd of the season last round for Melbourne’s clash with Gold Coast. The Tigers have thus far seen their crowds rise by 5% over last season, from an average of 3,145 in 2010/11 to 3,304 in 2011/12.

Three out of the NBL’s five matches last round were sell-outs, with New Zealand and Perth joining Melbourne in recording capacity crowds at their venues. There have been 10 sell-out crowds in the NBL since Round 11.

League-wide, attendance is up by approximately one percent this season, from 4,031 in 2010/11 to 4,064 through the end of Round 15. That figure, whilst only a modest increase, is quite likely to rise in coming weeks, with the Kings game tonight set to provide a massive boost.

Last season the NBL recorded a 12% increase in average attendance across the league on top of the 5% increase experienced in the 2009/10 season. The average crowd in the NBL has risen from 3,418 in 2008/09 to 4,064 thus far this season, growth of 16% in the space of just a few years.

The NBL has also experienced growth in other areas of its business as well, with unique visitors to its website up 20% this season and internet traffic overall up 70% since 2009/10.

Awesome stuff. Any growth is good. As long as all the figures mentioned above keeping trending upwards, then the league will be in good shape in the long term.

It's exciting to see so many sell outs. TV ratings are also sitting steady despite being delayed.

This time last year the average was a bit over 3900 so definitely improvement. Will be interesting to see if this significant swell in the school holidays can be maintained for the last two months.

im not knocking the growth, i think its good [maybe because the tv coverage is so bad people are going to the games where they can ?] but dont you just love the way the nbl only makes statements about themselves if its positive then discards anything they dont want to hear or deal with that isnt so ? so unevolved, yes ? how does one grow or appeal to anyone outside an existing base if everything less than flattering is met with disinterest ? [ubaka example is but one of many which spring to mind]

There arent too many companies out there who pump out negative PR, in fairness to the NBL. I am very disappointed with their apparent silence - publicly or behind the scenes - on the Ubaka issue though.

Honestly I hope the Kings can draw 8-9K tonight against Perth. Sure being from Adelaide I'd love to see the 36ers get the highest home crowd of the season but if Sydney (or even Auckland) get a bigger single game crowd then more power to them, and the NBL.

Crowd: 7532 at Sydney Entertainment Centre

Not bad, not bad at all. Not quite the 8-9k, but if Sydney can get a couple of these games a season, they'd be extremely happy

The last 7 minutes from the Kings were woeful. It looked like the team had bet against itself and was trying to lose.

Best big man in the league, one post entry in 7 minutes. Were up 11 at one point.

He's not the best big man in the league at the moment. 5/14 tells you that. Still should have seen more of the ball though. Bose on the block would have been a good one.

Anon '274, as paul said, every company does this. In fact, the best have PR teams on hand to counter negative information by either playing a certain line against questioning or be releasing distracting positive information.

They should have said something about the Ubaka situation or at least intervene privately (and could've done something without it hitting the public too hard), I agree.

If you want the league and sport to succeed in Australia, you'll need to get comfortable with them putting out the best news they can.

Kings basically threw that game away in the last 6 miutes or so. IMO they lacked a decent PG that could step up and take control down the stretch. Some of their shot selection was woeful to say the least...and Dann's two misses at the end from the line was the cherry on top!

They should have stuck with recruiting ubaka a good PG who can take control down the stretch with some decent clutch is exactly what sydney needs. If they had that could be genuine playoff chances. Without it not as sure.
