With the sixers doing so well..
My attention has turned to the state league.

Any players moving clubs or any new signings to speak of?

You want to police the boundary between a statement like the one in this thread and a reasonable discussion about recruiting over promoting at ABL level, given that many contributors don't have the time, inclination or ability to carefully construct their responses so as not to derail a thread? And do it without seeming to take sides or deterring people who might otherwise be useful contributors.

Maybe you guys have alot of players in the higher level NBL/WNBL because of two reasons, one being you come from a more affulent area than anyone else and you buy your way into teams or two you identify talent at an early age that isn't already at your club and poach them so you can claim the glory

I think that Sturt have successfully encouraged juniors to join them over the years from numerous other clubs and that they were very selective about their targets. But several other clubs have been the beneficiary of sturt juniors as well. All the clubs that can "recruit", do "recruit" because proving a club poached is impossible, therefore it's hardly noteworthy bringing it up again.

If you want fairness you need to go to a sport that has matured and has rules in place with representatives of the governing body hell bent on protecting the name and ethics of that game. That game unfortunately is not basketball.

Basketball is about dog eat dog, back yard rules and anything goes, where recruiting is an art-form practiced by clubs with impunity. Too many faceless men and women in basketball to be healthy because nepotism and favours are ever recurring issues.

The following are all the players that played in sturts last 3 matches:

Mark Bauer (Sturt Junior / Life Member)
Sam Daly (Sturt Junior)
Tom Daly (Sturt Junior)
Jan Warbout (Sturt Junior / 10 year badge)
Tim Klaosen (Sturt Junior / 10 year badge)
Todd Smyth (Sturt Junior / Life Member)
Adam Gavranich (Sturt Junior / 10 year badge)
James Spurrit (Sturt Junior)
Nathan Karetta (Sturt Junior)
John Marriot (Sturt Junior)
Stefan Wright (Sturt Junior)
Ky Meaden (Sturt Junior)
Darren Ng (Woodville Junior)
Jacob Holmes (Sturt Junior / Mavs Senior player)

So all but 1 player currently at sturt was a sturt junior through and through. Not many clubs could say that.

I'll give that a shot.

Sturts last game of the season had

Aneeka Smith (sturt junior)
Isabelle Daniels (sturt junior)
Amy Shaw (sturt junior)
Caroline Nixon (sturt junior/life member)
Ashleigh Greaves (sturt junior)
Katrina Fitzpatrick (sturt junior/10 year badge)
Lauren Gibbins (sturt junior)
Nicole Seekamp (sturt junior)
Conor Holmes (mavs junior/senior)

Others where;
Monique Bowley (sturt junior/life member)
Mady Forster (sturt junior)
Anna Maycock (sturt junior/Mavs junior/senior)
Hannah Richards (southern junior)
Tess Madgen (eastern junior/senior)

So 3 out of 14 didnt start playing with Sturt.

Answer, you able to find another club with as many club juniors?

And its just the facts. The whinging is coming from those green eyed with jealousy, who like a good story without the fact to push their own barrel.

Good representation from groups through the club.

I would think 5 girls
Smart - Norwood
Gladstone - Norwood
Fisher - Norwood
Greaves - Forestville
Mansfield - Centrals

Boys about 4 again
Bond - West
Brine - Southern
Carter - NBL
Franceshinis - Southern seniors

Just not quite as good as Sturt

Buddy,

Fransechinas started as a North junior and played ABA for North before moving to SOuthern for a year or two

Mansfield was a North junior before spending a year or two at centrals before returning

I think a couple of the other girls were North juniors first before going to other clubs and then returning.

If it has escaped your consciousness then allow me to point out that the clubs with money ARE dominating and that's why basketball remains on the bottom rung. The top clubs want to extinguish clubs and are well on the way to achieving it, just look at the junior mess where these same clubs have 3 or 4 sides per division while other clubs can't field sides. BSA is a joke and killing the sport through short sighted indifference. Basketball = buy a flag and that's why it will not flourish until it actually becomes a competition with player eligibility rules .

A mini draft system similar to the SANFL would be a good idea, those players from the sixers and lightning not aligned to a ABA club can be drafted in the prior seasons finishing order from last to first, or clubs can trade those picks for players from other clubs.

I think it would be a bit unfair if you had be a junior at a club since U10 and make it to the elite level then have to change clubs

Can anyone confirm the rumour that Norwood has asked BSA to consider that any Club with one or more of matching Norwood colours is to be considered a "feeder club" to Norwood. North and West have red, Sturt, Forestville and South have blue, Centrals have both colours, red and blue makes maroon which is Southern and Eastern, but Woodville miss out under this alleged new by-law.

However, Woodville would qualify by default if Forestville consider a club with yellow as one of their feeder clubs, or if they replaced green with blue.

But don't Sturt pride themselves on self development? Surely bringing in someone like that flies in the face of that and it's not like Sturt to be hypocritical.

So if Mitch is leaving South (unconfirmed?), then where should he go. OK, he's from Country Victoria. We all know that all the country players play at Mavs, therefore, if he is to leave South, Mavs seems logical.

As for Sturt women now getting Kate Gladstone I just don't understand that. How many clubs does that now make for her and while a reasonable player she is no standout. Surely they have some juniors they can blood.

Dont Centrals claim that they have the best junior coaching line up, and that they have turned the corner in dvelopment with all these college and National jun ior guys.

Why do they recruit?

Sturt players are recruited interstate and Nationally. How are they expected to compete against clubs who recruit if they can't replace players lost (because of opportunity) with clubs like yours who resuit entire teams if they cant plug holes like 1 big recruit.

If someone is being hypocritical, its you.

Sturt are going hard after weigh. It's Sturt themselves that set the rule about not recruiting from outside the club. Scott will need to ask board permission to recruit a non Sturt junior.

Big call for weigh to move to play for butler who has 0 experience in the league.

A lot of the ABL coaches now have elite level experience, surely he would play for someone that's done it themselves and understand the ins and outs of being a professional athlete and lots of experience in dealing with pros.

How will Norwood be the deepest with copper, eley, ottey and possibly 2 more players gone from last year. Have they recruited ?

North will be deep with Pero , Brandon brine, bond, burden, mapuna, frangers, new big from interstate,

Seriously though eagles must be big favourites again

true west on paper will be tough, american 2 guard on the way and Johnson is tipped to be a bearcat.

big qustion is balance, knight, johnson and blake truslove will be hard to juggle.

knight will want to be the man but he should be 4th or 5th in line behind johnson, american, tristan, blake etc etc

Not sure what's already been covered, but thought I'd post these two just in case:

Article in the Messenger re Warriors:

But Green said big years from the likes of Adam Blight, Cameron Wilson and Jarrod Graves, as well as further development of youth league players Luke Stanbridge, and Chris and Ryan Clark, would ensure the club improved its results.
And another in the Eastern Courier Messenger whatever-it's-called had Scott Butler confirming that Holmes was out for Sturt, Warbout would be in Mt Gambier, but that Daly would be more available.

Green said that, like all teams, he'd be trying to see which 36ers were available but it was a bit early to know at this point. Full story

Well I know for a fact Al is chasing Mitch Creek pretty damn hard.
I don't think he is going to get much more out of Adam Blight, my guess is he'll get less. Has been promising for years and has never really delivered.
He would be better off trying to get more out of Jarrad Graves, that kid used to be able ball back in his day!
Cam is a great point guard no doubt but he's going to be another year older and his numbers have started to slide already.
They used to have a couple of young ugly talls that could play, i'd be giving those guys more minutes.
If they get Creek he will be a very good fit for that team because a three man is what they are lacking.
I'll put my money on the table now and say it's going to be a Norwood vs Forestville GF again and Norwood will be the Champs!

I would like to see Sturt hand over the big guy spots to Marriott / Calligeros / Wright and further their development.

Side note I think there are no issues with recruiting players to fill gaps in an ABL team. If others clubs are doing that than I have no issues with any recruiting. My issues is when clubs bring in ABL players at the expense of a juniors chance.

Example I don't like
Retiring Starting PG
Recruiting from NBL or other club PG
Bench upcoming junior PG

Graves could ball back in the day, but at a JR level, isn't really a consistent factor these days (to many injuries) Cameron Wilson is a very erratic guard that is off for 6 games on for one. Creek is a great ABL player but average NBL player, he would definitely help that team. but really, do you think Woodville will be a factor at all for the coming season? NO, AL has alot of work to do before they are ready. I heard DJ will be suiting up for west? they would be slow with a DJ & Trustlove Line up. Who has Norwood got for the coming 2012 ABL season, didn’t a bunch of their guys retire? Forestville will always be a strong side! they are well coached and know how to win. Sturt seem to always be in the mix and again know how to win. I think it’s really to hard to Call who will be there at the end when it has not even begun. FORESTVILLE, WEST, STURT, NORWOOD and NORTH I feel will be taking the top 5 spots with anyone’s game at the end. West will be interesting with a few new additions and will be strong if they can put it together. Forestville has to be a heavy fave’s with Norwood a close 2nd if they have all their players coming back for the new season.

Would you not love to have the "Trouble" of Balancing Blake, johnston & Knight? you can go huge with blake and DJ or a bit more agile with either and Knight... agree that Knight will want to be the man and will need to take a back seat to a few guys, but on his night can produce a 20 20 game.

maybe learn the facts before coming to your uninformed conclusion. Vicki is a great coach and exactly what the club needs. Alot of damage done in previous years, and allowed to continue by the club! As far as I know she was not hand picked, she had to be interviewed along with another. She is the only one that has bout some kind of success in the past 4 years, so maybe lets not pass judgements on her and look at the players who have left and their attitudes instead. If you knew what she had to put up with, you would understand!

Its a great game to play but '149 anon' seems to think its in a good position. If you are still picking 40 year olds there is something wrong with the system. Across Adelaide, district players think the selection of some of the lightning players (stars excluded) is a joke.
Most females are over basketball and if you got out more you'd realise that as the anons above are telling you ABL is dead.

I wouldn't say the girls are in it just to 'play with their friend' half the reason that the girls loose interest is because of the peanut coaches, look at Norwood girls, how many are leaving or left last session due to the coaching staff and their ethics! They feel as they are much higher above the rest, above they're players, above they're own club. Yes, they want to win, but is it a good feeling knowing that you a destroying someones hopes, desires, dreams through being an idiotic, unapproachable, self-obbsesssed coach!???

That my personal opinion anyway, back to topic!
