Taipans lash out at TV Coverage

"THE Taipans will get three home games and 13 in total televised this season, according to the NBL's broadcast schedule released yesterday.

It is an increase from the 10 they were originally allocated last season and comes as broadcast partner ONE increased the total number of televised games from two a week to three.

The Melbourne Tigers, who boast NBA player Patty Mills, will be on air 22 times.

The numbers go against what Basketball Australia chairwoman Diane Smith-Gander told The Cairns Post during last season's finals campaign. She indicated that the club would receive double the number of televised home games this season after the convention Centre crowd average jumped nearly 30 per cent.

She also confirmed the attractive prospect of televising more reptile rumbles, however, the round one clash in Cairns between Townsville and the Taipans will not be televised, a fact that has angered many fans."

Someone in the Taipans camp is not happy, ouch.

Who cares, they are the most boring team in the NBL.

Why would they show a game between the 2 teams widely tipped to come 8th and 9th in favour of other games on the weekend such as Mills vs Bogut or Adelaide vs Perth (always a big one)?

Being a Cairns fan, I get that people will blast us for not having the greatest team in the league, but the games with Townsville were consistently the best games going last year. In addition to this, Taipans got no video time in the new 1:40 video the NBL released (excluding 2 seconds of cheerleaders) Not getting the exposure of the Kings or Tigers is expected, but the NBL should be at least showing some sign that they give two shits about the smaller clubs.

They were horrible! Both teams were lucky to reach a field goal percentage of 40!

Yes it's disappointing that the far North teams dont get much home coverage but be realistic, the costs of producing a game in those centres is larger than most.

was their TV coverage effected by their massive exodus of players to Melbourne?

Arguing that costs are higher is fair enough but that's easy solved - get the locals to do it. Same clearly applies to NZ.

Tom, didn't the Cairns Chairman come out a couple of years ago and say they did not care about TV coverage?

Funny how those same two teams that are always picked to come "8th or 9th" end up in the playoffs time & again...

HO, this would probably be the chairman that also brought us into administration, we have Beecroft now. It's foolish to think tv coverage isn't important anyway. And anon, think back to RD25 (I think) when Crosswhite was ejected, Game 1 of the Playoffs when Ubaka forced it into overtime, and I know this isn't a Cairns/Townsville game, but Game 2 of the Grand Final, one of the best NBL games in recent memory

Channel 10 have 100% control of what games they will show.

Cairns won't get home games due to location, simple.

Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane/Gold Coast are clearly the markets that Channel 10's games are directed at because they are the 3 biggest TV markets.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that TV is a business and networks are not around to keep everyone happy or promote the sport in regional areas?
