Tigers reportedly ask Corletto to repay money

Heard this independently of this article and I can't imagine Corletto would invent this either, so I'm buying it.

Here's an article about it

AFAIK, non-import players are generally paid over a 12 month period starting in the middle of the year, even though the season doesn't run for this full period. e.g., a player may finish playing for a team at the end of the finals, but keep getting a regular payment until the end of the financial year (or whenever the cut-off is).

The sequence of events is roughly as follows.

Tigers sign Mills.
Tigers deactivate Corletto, saying he will be paid to train with the team, but is free to explore options with other clubs.
Corletto signs with the Breakers.
Tigers head honcho Seamus McPeake meets with Corletto and asks him to refund the last two months of payments.
Corletto is in shock. He has been working for the club during this period, attending every training, doing clinics and promotional appearances, etc.

I could understand an owner slipping up if they were new to all this, but Seamus is not new to the NBL. How the hell could he (reportedly) get this so wrong?!

Are you actually surprised Seamus might pull something like this Isaac?

Yes and no. Didn't think he'd take it this far though.

From what I heard, Corletto in that meeting was incredulous, in utter disbelief.

What a joke. Hopefully the NBL backs corletto up on this one. He has done everything right by the league and the tigers by bowing out professionally and moving on quickly.

Sheamus McDill-Pickle is probably disgruntled because Corletto didn't pick from his list of "Clubs we can handle you going to because you'll have no impact there".

McPeake could always cut up his Tigers polo to make 7 more.

Honestly, I can't see what is so wrong with an employer asking for club plot shirt's etc back and certainly not sure why he would expect to keep a club car if he was allowed to drive it while playing for the Tigers.

You would've seen in the article that he didn't dispute the car and that was given back. The issue is asking for pay to be returned even though Corletto had already worked as a Tiger for those two months.

If true that is an absolute disgrace.

He has been remunerated for services rendered. The tigers made the call so they need to move on.

If you cannot afford two months of salary payments to Daryl Cornetto then you should not own a club IMO.

If I was a player I would not want to get second hand polo's to wear

Jacob is studying law so he should be well versed in contract and employment law.

IMO, without seeing the fine print, I think the Tigers might actually owe Corletto, so if I was him, I wouldn't be writing a cheque out just yet.

So, Tigers sign Mills, then Tigers deactivate Corletto, saying he will be paid to train with the team, but is free to explore options with other clubs. He accepts that contractual arrangement and during the two month period he works for the club, attends every training, does clinics and promotional appearances, etc.
Corletto then signs with the Breakers. (presumably informs Tigers as required), then Tigers, via Seamus McPeake, asks him to refund the last two months of his employment payments.

If Corletto fulfilled his part of the agreement by representing the Tigers as a Tiger Player with full knowledge of the club during that period, and the Tigers have made a single payment, then that payment confirms that the Tigers accept that he is in their employ and accept the conditions of his employment.

Now, unless there was a clause in the contract specifically asking for re-imbursement should he sign to another club or via other condition breaches, I see there to be little grounds for a repayment of wages. In the absence of a specific player contract, one expects the standard NBL player contract to be in force and I doubt if such a condition would apply.

I suspect that he was possibly part way through the next month when his employment ceased and so should be entitled to at least part month payment. One presumes that redundancy payments or leave entitlements do not apply, but if they do he should expect some form of remuneration in this regard.

Therefore, unless there was a specific pay back clause or a clause demanding payback for other reasons which he breached, I doubt if the Tigers could insist on a pay back. Without seeing the playing contract one can't say, but I am sure Jacob will be the best man to help.

this sounds like the tigers thought no one would want him with the rosters as packed as they were until NZ had some space following the sacking. Corletto should be able to get out of this one. looks like corletto wont be returning to the tigers ever again.

"Without seeing the playing contract one can't say"

Jack Toft - probably the most accurate part of your post

I'd guess that with a little public attention, Seamus will have had to forget about this.

From a complete outsider's point of view:

Seamus forks out heaps of money for Mills and his roster.
Willing to pay Corletto not to play basically.
So money doesn't seem to be a huge issue with the big man.
But then Seamus chases Corletto for a few hundred/couple of thousand dollars?

IMO money can't have anything to do with it.
Also, how ticked off can you get with a player you dumped and who signs with another team?

Can't help but think there is a lot more to this story than dollars and cents......
