Basketball Fashion

Is it just me or is the current 'fashion' in basketball just gone way too far in our local comp. After visiting Melbourne recently - home of the elbow sleeves, calf bands and just plain crap hair I thought that this would never happen in Adelaide.

However some things that the guys and girls wear now are just plain rediculous and i dont know if they are aware that they look stupid.

However i would like to open the forum, without using any direct names etc of the stupidest things you have seen people on the court wearing.

Ill start with - Wearing a high pair of white socks with a small pair of black socks over the top.

Or kids wearing 5,6,7 different wristbands and headbands all over themselves.

Look wat the NBA has done to us!!

That's one thing I don't agree on either to be honest. Bracelets like those and also the Nike ones that players are wearing should not be allowed to be worn during the game. It's just as much as a danger than pockets in shorts or chains around necks. Why all of a sudden have the rules changed???

finger bands, anyone?

i also know a certain user of this forum who has an entire lunchbox dedicated to his headbands, fingerbands, and armbands.

i also don't like people carrying a bag with them, in which they put all their street clothes in before they play. i mean, are you there to look good or play? and then you have the people with a bag AND a shoe box just to make it worse. I can handle a shoe box because i know people want to keep their shoes clean, but i mean there's no need to dress in metrosexual clothing before a game. when i rock up to a game i have my ankle braces on, b-ball shoes are sometimes on, and maybe wearing a tshirt over my singlet to prevent the cold. if i go out afterwards i'll leave my clothes in the car. and that's all you need to do.

ive finished ranting now

re: anonymous

The reason a lot of people come to games dressed "metrosexual" is because often team managers keep the uniforms and bring them out at each game! Also afterwards people have showers and therefore have to put something on...I assume you would prefer people used bags to carry their clothes to and from rather than see streakers make their way from the showers to their car!

Get a life... Some people where different clothes to the game or sweat bands coz they SWEAT! and it is practical to wear these items coz the team manager might take all the uniforms home with them Eg (Reserves). Not everyone wears certain items for cosmetic reasons. I know damn sure Tbag doesnt wear sweat bands for cosmetic reasons, have you seen how much that guy sweats!

Im glad this one has been brought up and i completely agree with all of the people against it. Dont try saying i wear finger bands arm bands head bands wrist bands elbow bands leg bands because i sweat.

All fashion that stuff that i guess if you want to wear it (meaning finger bands and wrist sayings) should be off the court.

I don't think that it matters what people were in a game. Some people actually were sweat bands because they sweat and use them for there intended use, were as some people wear them for looks if they look stupid then fool on them I don't think that it matters either way.

Surely people should be able to wear whatever they want (as long as it isnt dangerous to other players).

I used to wear a elbow band on my left (due to a ever increasing elbow, from knocks and falls). It matched nicely with my knee high socks.

Nowdays I don't wear anything but my old school converse socks (sappa style), oh and way too much hair at times :-)

But I dont see any problem with people wearing this stuff, except maybe the current trend of rubber/plastic bracelets.

people are asking whats happening to us? we are just doing what we have been doing for a long time, that being following our NBA idols. back in my playing day, i was called everything from a showpony to a faggot, even once by an opposing coach i was told i was a disgrace to the game of bball. and why i hear you ask? becoz i wore a sweat band just below my left elbow. the soul purpose being, to wipe sweat off my brow. and that was way before the accesory war started. now i giggle to myself when i see people wearing 2 different colored headbands, 4 arm bands and a sleeve, and one on their left leg and one knee high sock on the right. everyone should maybe just stop trying to be like those who play in the NBA, concentrate on their game and just play basketball.

I don't have a problem with people wearing arm bands etc. but they should keep it to one per bodypart eg 1 armband per arm etc. But leg sleeves, arm sleeves and that sorta thing should be limited 2 only if u need them because of injury

Its bad these days. all these AND 1 characters are rocking up with there ridiculously oversized ear muffs of headphones, and there hip hop crankin, bar that. just play the game. accesories should only be worn out of neccesity. In my opinion, basketball fashion has gone insanely over the limit. Of course I used to be one of the kids always sporting the headbands and wristbands, but then I had to grow up as a player. Everytime I see some teenage guy with an arm sleeve, it tells me all about his game. The little faggot is too "pretty" for basketball and he is going to try to play his game that way too. Which gives me an advantage. Unless he has the exact same reasons as Allen Iverson's reason to wear it, (his elbow being f***** up) then don't wear it. You just look stupid. Is it just me, or is it the "pretty" boy on the court that always can't hit a jumpshot, or blows it for his team. So unless you insist on looking like a dumbass, then don't wear accessories for no damn reason.

Just writing like that is weird.

"Plus most of tha ballers(that got mad game) wears accessories i.e. sleeves, headbands, durags etc."

Firstly I haven't seen any good ballers wear durags while playing as I doubt they'd be allowed even in NBA.

Secondly, Sleeves were made for people like Iverson who had problems with his elbow and it provided protection. They aren't for people with 'mad game'.

Thirdly, just because good ballers wear that stuff doesn't mean you'll be a good player.

And finally who cares what people wear, it's not like I go out thinking "hmmm I wonder what my opponents are going to be wearing today knee highs, headbands I guess I'll soon find out". It's not like they're bringing the level of skill down. If they want to pay for all this added stuff it's not going to bother me, nor should it bother others. If you have a problem with them, beat them on the court and show them that you're better than them WITHOUT all the extra 'goodies'.

The reason for the "live strong" craze, originally started in b'ball. They were first used to tighten the forefoot on some older styles of footwear. After that, players used them to inflict a minimal amount of pain by flicking them onto their wrist, if they missed a shot, or messed up. Wearing them loose, is just a fashion...
Fingersleeves however, are for compression, if you happen to bend a finger backwards; which we all know happens way too much.

clearly people are comming to the game with out their uniform on as they are cold. seeing as it is winter players would not want to be getting a cold. also carrying a bag can also hold many valuable items such as, keys (to a car), a wallet (to carry a license as we need to carry it on us), mobile phone(to call someone if something has happend), a basketball (to use to shoot with), and maybe a drink bottle. wearing extra cloths such as trakies, jumpers and t-shirts are a nessisary item, if that particular club doesent have these things for players to wear to a game.

I dont know about in Adelaide, but I play and coach in Victoria (I used to play in Adelaide) and the trend here especially for the under 14-18 girls is the concept of wearing ugg boots before and after games. I just cannot comprehend putting on knee high fluffy boots when you have just played a game of basketball! It has to be wrecking their ugg boots, and be causing a sweaty/smelly item of apparel for the poor mothers!! It's just ridiculous!

COZ I SWEAT. and i still do. i dont mind people that have them for the same reason, but when i see a guy with a headband, sweatBANDS, long socks or the band under their knee, it makes me feel like a goose for wearing them at all. and yes, people do where them because they sweat.

Seriously, it doesnt matter what I wear, im 13 years old, 6'3 and no matter if i wear the sweat bands or not I still land the j's. Only problem is my kicks, i have to buy three pairs at once cuz im size 17. But when i see someone come out with the iverson sleeve, and all i3 bands, i just laugh. Its ok if you have a headband here or there, but wear like 8 bands that really have no function. If you really have an injury just wear tape, itll do way better than the stupid sleeves these players wear. As for the walkin ad boards, i totally agree. These companys are just making extra accessories for the players to wear, resulting in us buying them. Mt friend just bought one of the iverson sleeves for $20 cad and it didnt do squat, it fell right off in the middle of the game, so in my opinion these bands or w.e are useless and theres not a need for them unless u sweat majorly, i mean cmon were not all shaq the water fountain now are we! ;)

I just hate it when players wear pointless accessories. If it helps you, wear it. I don't mind a shooting sleeve AT ALL, unless it's on your non shooting arm? I mean what's the point? And wristbands on your biceps and stuff is dumb. Wearing a leg sleeve on your non jumping leg? Dumb. I think it's fine to wear accessories, but for a purpose. I would wear tights cause they're so comfortable and keep your legs ready and loose, but I am afraid that people will judge me that I'm trying to look like Kobe or something. I wear knee sleeves for comfort and to keep my knees fresh instead. Just have a purpose to it!

Maybe if your in the NBA you'll see a couple of people who wear them for need, but if your playing a game of under 17's that isn't for state, there's no way you need a sleeve, a wrist or headband if you really need it, but come on you just look like a try-hard. Wear what you need not what you see in the NBA.

i dont have any problems with sweatbands fingerbands, headbands and knee high sock, just as long as it suits their uniform and their personality on the court.

it would look good if it goes with the uniform and i think it attracts people. HOWEVER, if you start wearing a purple headband and you are wearing an orange uniform..and if you wear if just cuz AI,LBJ or Kobe wears it..its unattractive.

just make sure it suits your personality and uniform.... and you dont really need it anyway,

its being on the court having fun and enjoying the game of basketball.

but dont you hate it when you see those guys that are all pimped up and stuff..but they cant even dribble left??! haha
