No, His Wellington Saints team were extremely talented. Not saying he didn't help in some way, but there were very noticeable holes in his gameplan.

Very similar to Lemanis--Took on an extremely talented team and was made to look better than he was.

He coaches a very good offensive game, and his Saints team were deadly in transition and in their primary offences (shots within the first 10 seconds of the shot clock)--They averaged 96.8ppg a game which is crazy in a 40min game

But defensively they were terrible. gave up an average of 88ppg. Some of their rotations were poor, rebounding etc.

As a head coach, you need to be good in both offense and defense, however Pero isn't.
Not yet anyway, but he will learn and down the track he has the potential to be a very good one.

Disagree with the last poster 100 percent pero will go down as one of the best coaches from australasia, he just gets the basketball environment. He knows how to relate to players and get them to play hard. He played to the saints strength and was rewarded accordingly, yes they had the most talent but in one off games that does not mean that you will win the championship. He was in my opinion coaching the teams he has played on when he was playing anyhow. There are no really good coaches in the anbl so I think he will get his chance if he wants it. As a coach you must play to your players strengths this is the talent of coaching not making players play the way you want to as the coach.

Alot of good coaches around that aren't in Head coaching jobs at the ANBL level.

Dean Vickerman is a very good coach for the Waikato Pistons (and assistant with the Breakers) Shawn Dennis assistant coach of the Wildcats and ex coach of the HB Hawks, Ryan Weisenberg coach of Manwatu Jets (ex-LA Lakers Scout, Kenny Stone coach of the Pirates another very good one, as with Richard Dickel from Southland.

Im not saying that Pero won't be a very good coach, because I think he will. I just don't think he is ready right now; He has to be an Assistant for a few more years, and learn a bit more stuff before he is fully ready for a head coaching job.

"He played to the saints strength".
Well, thats not rocket science to work out. He had quick Guards like Webster, Tait and Henry as well as mobile big men such as Frank, Maxey and Kareem Johnson.

Any coach would be able to recognise that an uptempo game was their strength. In fact, youd be a fool if you couldn't recognise that!

"There are no really good coaches in the anbl so I think he will get his chance if he wants it."

Um..Gordie McLeod, Rob Beveridge, Aaron Ferne (Did a great job to get Cairns to the Finals last season), Joey Wright

Yes Gordie's a good coach but he coached in Wellington with largely the same team plus some better locals and didn't even make it to the finals with the Saints in the two seasons he coached. Didn't know how to bring a bunch of good individual players together to be a great team. Dean Vickerman coached saints for two seasons and the same story great individuals but coulnt make them come together to be a great team. Kenny Stone is a good coach but same story he had Dillion, Lindsay, Aaron Olson, and Casey and still couldn't do back to back championships. For a guy that supposedly had massive holes in his gameplan suggests great things if that's the case and he can still win back to back.

But thats what Pero does he takes a team of individuals and makes them play for each other where other more established coaches couldn't. 11 NBL titles, including the last 4 on the trot (2 as a player and the next 2 as a coach) is pretty hard to argue with. He won't be an NBL coach tomorrow but he will definitely be one in the future and a good one at that.

Yes, he did a good job getting Webster, Tait, Henry, etc. in sync in the offense.

But defensively, there were terribly out of sync. Out of all the 6 playoff teams, they had the worst PA total. (Which shouldn't have happened considering they had a very big front court with Johnson, Maxey, Adams and Frank).

A good coach knows that there is two concepts to the game- Offense and Defense.
You can get away with been a pure offensive coach in the NBL, but in the ANBL your defensive deficiencies will be exposed constantly.

On a side note, Leon Henry deserves to be an ANBL player, he can shoot the lights out, defend, pass, rebound and he has tremendous size at 6"7. Would be a great swingman in the league.
Wonder if the Breakers are looking at him.?

Leon Henry has come along in leaps and bounds but I don't think NZ have room for him, would be a great affordable pick up for another team.

Leon is lazy no work ethic.

Macdub note your comments but even despite these things he was still able to come in with a similar team to what Gordie and Vickerman had and win it back to back where they couldn't. All I'm saying is give the guy a break first two seasons back to back champs and your already hating. Surely his early record suggests ability to get better with more time and experience? What other coach do you know with 11 titles first 2 years of coaching, who are bad defensively and then still manage to win it all first two times around. Come on he will definitely be a good ANBL coach one day

Not sure if he would be overally successful but if a 2nd NZ team joined the comp (which needs to happen sooner than later) He would be a great local candidate that the fans could get behind and support.
