ACT v Tas Semi??

Is it possible that we could have an ACT v Tas semi in the U16 boys? What a turn up that would be for the big states.
You would expect some serious reviews to occur in Vic, NSW, SA.

New review - don't. The kids under his wing are the ones that finished last at U18's including losing to NT.

Fair crack, Rob. The U18's had a poor tournament but their AIS tall was out with injury. And on the subject of Schueller am happy to have him down here.

this is great for both teams but be serious this says more about how good these kids are... than how bad other states are...
look at the positives there are fantastic ballers in both these groups obviously and the results are showing
NSW country men again disapointing result under Marty Mclean former NBL player after a big build up and well hyped group, lost to sa metro who hadnt been crash hot but shows that its a relatviely even comp this year...
pretty sure vics will get it easily though

Interesting player in the ACT line-up. Tad Dufelmeier son of infamous wanker Tad Dufelmeier of Canberra Cannons fame. All reports are like father like son.

Realise Vic Metro Men would be a contender each year but does anyone rate the ACT any chance at all in their pool game match up later today?
Interesting game, both undefeated so far, game late on the eve of the semi finals.

Tassie Pete - ACT lost to two Vic Met club teams - Bulleen and Waverly (I believe) at Classics - they are not a very good chance agasint Vic Met which has too much depth.

Good on them though, they have been brilliant so far - they've beaten at least two teams with more talent (NSWC and SAM) - through superior coaching and play. Hope they win a medal!

Notice a few posts on free throws of late. Watching live stats on Vic Country vs SA Country. Game in progress now. SA hitting back hard in 2nd half, were down 40 at half, now 17 half way through last. Unfortunately free throws running at 2 / 13. Never gonna get there shooting like that .... Got within 13 but lost by 21.

Noticed with interest that SA Metro Women failed to capitalise from the line in the U18 womens final down here in Ulverstone in April against the Vics. Leading until last quarter going down 70-61, shooting 2 / 14.

I guess 50% is tolerable in games you win, but surely coaches must be seeking 75%-80% on a regular basis.

Thoughts anyone?

i would think at u/16s level
most players should be around 75 percent
as in all leagues of all ages u will have those u cant shot at all and will be below 50 percent and those who shoot 80 plus
but i agree some teams are losing on the back of missed free throws, gota be hurting the coach as they will be judged on results, not sure how much impact the state coach should have on foul shooting though...

Don't teach shooting technique, don't correct shooting technique flaws, don't have the interest in the flock just the rams and no one at Sasi is accountable thus shooting will remain below par. Across the board the skill and ability is down at these nationals and that occurs but the winners won't have that to remember, just the win. Well done to Tasmania for taking the head honcho on and reaping rewards now, SA is due for change in 2070.

So if SASI is responsible for this group.

How is it not responsible for the 2 x top 4 finishes 3 months ago?

Maybe the kids just aren't as good.

ACT won't get anywhere near Vic Metro, and nobody will. They are bigger, stronger, and better skilled in all positions.

The Tasmania guys have done very well, have really enjoyed watching them play throughout the week. They play hard and play as a team, and just compete with everything. Full credit should go to all involved and especially the kids.

Think it's a bit unfair on SASI to 'blame' them for poor performances. You can only coach the kids you have available, and in this age group clearly Vic Metro have a dominant pool of kids to pick from. So much so, that they probably could have sent 3 teams that all would have gone close to the medals.

yer cant blame sasi for freethrows especially
even if kids are taught how to shoot
free throws are about repitition... it comes down to the individual and how much they are willinging to put into their freethrows, no excuses for some of the free throw percentages being shot by a lot of states not just sa at these nats

The 20's were basically AIS results where it's hours of shooting prac but the 18's have consistently fallen short and on the back of average shooting.Training kids to death without attention to basics was the sasi motto. State is run, run, run because you're too small, excessive trainings not coordinated with clubs and with zip on shooting.

Juno, bullshit!
Freethrows are about repetition but with the right technique otherwise all you're putting into muscle memory is repeated poor technique. Kids can practice ad nauseum and if their technique is poor success is a lottery.
The reason why kids with good technique miss revolves around the quality of the foul on the player. The harder the foul the tougher the shot to make and the same with big minute tired players where fatigue also plays it's part. But essentially Technique will get better results in all cases.

of course technique is important, i agree 100 percent
however i know many players with techniques that it you look at them are fine, but due to lack of practice and repition are no sucessful
there is a balance
ur 100 percent right about the need for good technique, but shawn marrion is an example of practice over techqiue, he is definately the exception not the rule...

Reality Check
Years ago

Sometimes you wonder if people commenting on here know what is going on. The shooting of SA is generally recognised as a fundamental strength of our girls and boys programs. Maybe posters should look at the stats further and note that many of the poor free throw percentages at the last 18 nationals reflect two to three players who shot the majority of these. Maybe they should also compare percentages over number of years and then realise that one or two games does not show a trend. Equally they should consider how much responsibility rests with the clubs for developing shooting after all they train there for 4 hours a week vs 1.5 hours at SASI. Finally maybe watching some state training sessions might show how much does go into shooting possibly 40 minutes of every 2 hour session. (correction is given whether players act on it, that is their choice) Perhaps this shooting emphasis is why both the boys and girls of SA metro regularly make medal games. After all the girls 18's have medaled in each of the last 3 years.

The ACT team has continually beaten "better" teams due to great preparation and coaching. Great job by him.

Is this coach a newbie or has he taken other ACT teams before. I ask because I have a feeling that he has talent this year so that is the only thing that is different

Brilliant effort Tas men!!!!

Top of Pool B.

Hope you can claim another scalp tomorrow by taking down the ACT.

Top spot has given you guys a real chance of making it all the way to the Gold Medal game.

Apparently (not confirmed) this is the first time Tas has headed up a Pool.

The Basketball Tas trophy cupboard is pretty bare too. Best result was Silver in 1984 against a Shane Heal led Vic Metro. And must have been a Hugh Greenwood team in 2007 that made the final four but lost both the semi and bronze medal games.

History beckons guys.

All the very best to the team and a pat on the back to Keith, Dave and Josh for doing such a stellar job so far. And that's not forgetting Justin Schueller for "driving the bus" for the last few years. Cheers.

Free throws.

Queensland North vs. SA Country today

58 all - with 17 seconds to play
2 missed free throws from SA
5 seconds to play
2 made free throws from QLD
QLD win 60-58

Queensland North 14 / 29 overall
SA Country 3 / 7 overall

My post yesterday was not a crack at SA at all. Nor is todays. Just an observation about free throwing in general. Juniors through seniors, all grades, here in Tasmania and on the mainland. Agree with Anonymous, in many cases not enough work done on shooting across the board. Be that practice and technique adjustment if required.
