R14 ABL Action

Another rivalry round to keep things interesting on a cold wet winter night.
Sabres vs Eagles @ Pasadena, playing for the rights to control SA Basketball
Women: Definite MOTN. Some very good players for both teams and this should come down to the cunning of both coaches. On paper, Sturt should have the Eagles wrapped up like a Christmas present. Sturt's only loss have been against Norwood but Borrego has given the Eagles another set of wings and extra talons which means the Eagles have had two seasons, pre- Borrego and with Borrego. Eagles have added 18 to their offence and squeezed 7 from their defence for an overall 25 point improvement. Borrego will be the big bad boogie monster for Sturt fans tonight, no celebrations for them as they find a fly into their chardonnay.
Men: This is a bit like Coles vs Woolies when these teams meet. The flambouyant Forestville meets the stingy Sturt in a battle of offence vs defence. Sturt are better in defence and Forestville better in offence. Sturt with Jacob seem to have a better balance and so it should be the "Evil Empire" who should triumph tonight against the Forestville Jedis. Sturt to execute Order 66 without giving any compassion. The Sith Lords to continue their ascent towards a GF match.

Norwood vs North @ Mars
Women: North had a good win against West last round and despite dropping the first quarter, the Norwood juggernaut rolled on. North to face a massive test tonight against Norwood who yield a miserly 51 points in defence. North might catch a napping Norwood, but then Tiger Airways might start flying again.
Men: North to beat Norwood at Mars? Possible, but the way Davo has them playing D at the moment, North might have better luck getting Julia to admit Bob Brown is the true PM or getting Nicole Cornes to invite Mick Molloy to a family BBQ. Last time they met, the Flames torched the Rockets by 18 points and despite a purple patch of 7 wins in 8 games by North since then, Norwood to lurch forward cementing it’s minor premiership chances.

West vs Woodville @ Port Adelaide playing for the Jimmy Barnes Cup
Women: West dropped a game a home last week, but will be looking for an easy win against the young Woodville team. West won by 17 last time and are on song to make it at least 20 this time.
Men: Woodville are the current holders of the Jimmy Barnes Cup, but both teams have won 2 of their last 5 so form coming into this one is patchy to say the least for both of these working class battlers. Al Green has bagged a couple of close wins showing he has the prowess of McGyver with a paper clip in getting out of trouble. Probably the only real difference is that big bag of rocks for West (aka the “Cairns Crusher”) who even Bear Grylls would have trouble grappling with. His defence should be the difference tonight and the JBC should be sitting in Port Adelaide at night’s end.

Mavs vs Lions @ Siberia East playing in the Pariah Cup
Women: The Mavs gave Sturt a scare at their last home game and have a slim chance tonight if the cards fall their way. D seems to be an issue with the Lionesses who have lost their last 3 and need a win to keep in touch with the 5 and keep their finals chances alive.
Men: Mavs have the talent to smash teams week in week out, so why aren’t they? Apart from an early win against Sturt, their only other wins have been against the bottom two teams. They’re easy wins! Lions have had their chances this season, but their appetite must be questioned as they have consistently put themselves in a winning position and not taken advantage to devour their prey. Last time these two teams met, the Mavs won the game through Jack Madgen free throws to limp over the line. It should be another close game tonight. The Mavs are favoured to win, but their D is a loose as a pair of old jocks and if the Lions take advantage of this, then a double dakking might just prevail.

Sunday
Panthers vs Tigers @ Marion playing for the title of Big Cat of the South
Women: MOTD. The Tigeresses and Panthers are two teams locked in a four-way battle for 5th spot and both need to make each game count if they are to play finals. Last time the Tigers won by 3, but that was when South were as unlucky as a one eyed, three legged dog chasing a car on the Southern Expressway. This afternoon, it’ll be a different story. I have my predicted score bang on even which means this should go to OT and send the men’s game running late.
Men: It is a different South team without Mitch Creek. They are knocking on the door of the 5 and a home win would be as warming as soup on a cold rainy day. DJ looks set to have his own private Tiger hunt today. In the last 5 games, he has averaged 35 ppg, 18 rpg and 3 bpg. Tigers have had a horrible season and look set for a spoon, wooden in variety. However, they should take encouragement from the fact their last win was against South, so South fans should keep the Pattriti on ice until the final siren. DJ to go Rambo once again - when was the last drop someone dropped 50?.

Woodville-Sturt @ St Clair
Women: I would like to say this’ll be a close contest, but I would be lying.
Men: Ditto

THe girls that arrived at the Lions outfit this yr are well known around the league. Dont be fooled by their talk of turning the culture around. They are part of the problem and have problems been in succesful and not successful teams previously. You watch, these girls are all about themselves and will move onto another program by season end and the Lions women will return to where they belong, at the bottom of rung of the ladder.

The Lions needed recruit players and coaches to build the program, proven winners, not people their for their own egos, who'll move onto cause issues in another club next season. As always the Lions are looking for short term success.

Also hear brad hill not playing so may cancel out the daniel carlin loss, only just though carlin is a gun.

the new girls that shoot 20% from the floor, with the point being the only good player (except cannot shoot and turns the ball over too much) yet they yell at others.

The coach is to blame too. He plays these girls all game with no breaks. No wonder their defence slackens off, they are too tired. That with the fact that they shoot 20% from the floor, you are not going to win games. Pity the coach leaves the best perimeter shooter on the bench and plays 0 minutes.

These girls got the initial coach kicked out when they didn't have a losing record. Since the change they have a losing record. That's karma Centrals. You get what you deserve.

Is it true that these players are getting paid? Wish i could shoot 20% as a two guard and get paid.

Anon 322763 and Anon 322793, couldnt have said it better myself. short term success is all centrals can see. the president was happy to get rid of the previous coach in order to keep the problem players. now look at the mess they are in. i get wanting to do whatever you can to get your womens program off the bottom of the ladder but you need to do it within reason.

Players conspiring to get rid of a coach is not a good thing, especially when the coach has got them off to the best start in god know's how long.

One of these players constantly yells at her team mates yet she isn't even that good a player herself. People in the stands have commented about her behaviour.

Players cannot wait for the season to finish as they don't like it anymore. Is that what you want from a basketball club, well any kind of club to be honest??? Especially one that still has a shot at finals.

So i think people are commenting on the entire situation and not just a coach being sacked. Even it was that, did he deserved to be sacked anyway????

Reply #322829 | Report this post

Guys get your facts straight, Moore stepped down to ill health, he was never sacked.

Would do well to support Centrals endeavour to lift standard, Moore got squad off to great start, Todd has tough gig coming in mid season but has maintained momentum.

Players whether they are new or old have been set the bar to achieve by both creditable coaches its up to them now to make most of it

While the shooting percentages of these centrals players are very low it is not much different to any of the guards from other teams that are near the bottom of the ladder. Its just the way it goes in the womens league

Reply #322861 | Report this post

Exactly. Those percentages are normal for the bottom teams. Maybe that plays a part in them being bottom. If they can lift those %'s up then they score more from the perimeter and with that comes more scoring on the inside as it stretches the floor. Surely there is someone that can shoot better than that (within the squad that is).

Look at their bigs. One starter shoots approx. 37% (not great) and the other starter around the 46% mark which is decent. They also have another shooting 50%+ (smaller volume of shots) but doesn't get on the court. Seems like they have fairly efficient bigs offensively.

If they increase the % from the guards and get some rotations then finals is def a chance.

So was it coach moore that got them off to a good start or the 4 newly recruited players, think u will find it was the players that have contributed to the wins. Those that are close to the group know that. Those sniping on here are possibly the ones that have run out of practice crying when trainings got a little tougher after the coaching change.

They have won 5 more games this year than the last 3 added together so I think the players deserve some credit.

The Lions are definitely better and I think the coaching change at the start of the season definitely would have helped. Also getting these players would certainly help. It seems there are a lot of politics involved behind the scenes that people have issue with. An earlier post mentioned that that these girls have brought trouble with them elsewhere. Do you want that drama at your club I guess. Will they be there next year also. Interesting to see.

They are better due to point (I think one of the best in the league especially if she lower her t/o's) and the import (who's starting to score on a consistent basis, just needs to pick up defensively). The four girl is averaging just under a double double and gets steals for her size. They are not due to the 2 & 3 positions. They have others on the bench that may be as effective if not more, minus getting the negativity that apparently one of these players brings. Who would want to play with someone like that, especially when she is not that good a player herself.

I think that rotations play a big part and Centrals have very few, hence their fade out in games.

They should realistically be pushing for a finals appearance and it would be good for the club and competition if this happens. Question is, will they get there. Time will tell.

East up by 2 at end 1st, 18-16

Did the Centrals coach have a read? I mentioned one of their talls that has shot 50%+ this season and how she gets no time. Tonight she play 26 minutes and second top scores with 16 @ 75%. Also had 10 boards. Great job!

See Mahoney had a blinder 18 pts, 17 re, 12 as & 5 stls. They are fantastic stats.

They did only win by 12 though to the bottom team that are winless and who they beat by 40 first time around.

I see the two guard that yells at her team mates all the time managed to keep up her great field goal percentage, shooting 2 from 20. That's a massive 10%. Does that mean her team mates get to tear her to strips in the change rooms like she normally does???? They can question her why took more shots than anyone else on the team when she couldn't hit a shot. Maybe she should have looked to distribute a little more, rather than shooting. Only 1 assist in the game.

great game in the men at pasadena - lot of momentum.

got down the last shot from D Ng - thought he was fouled on a shot a few seconds earlier though.

Tucker and Mottram played well and no. 14 for the eagles hit great shots in the clutch.

very entertaining game - could have gone either way

Not bagging anyone at all. My point is that no player has the right to treat his or her team mates that way. This person is not the best player on the team and even if she is, she has no right to point out others deficiencies when she has some herself. That's my point, not trying to "bag" anyone.

There's a coach and assistant coaches to utilise for this. If a player wants more from their team mates, surely there is a more proactive and constructive way to go about it. How can a player back themselves when in the back of their mind they have to worry about whether a team mate will have a go at them.

The competition would be better if a club like Centrals can make finals so hopefully this is a start of a run.

South women took care of Southern by 20 odd. Sarah Peddle with a huge 27 points, 9 boards, 9 assists, 8 steals, shot at 50% and drew 7 fouls. Whopping efficiency rating of 50. Ashleigh Spencer dropped 31 and pulled 15 boards.

I am reading this thread in disgust. At the fact that people who i presume are actually involved with Lions have written such crap about people who are trying to help the club. Maybe if you arent getting minutes it's because your not good enough at this point in time. I Honestly think it is cowardly and appalling that people can come on here and moan about people they see and most likely interact with on a weekly basis but can't say it to their face... And if we are going to talk about the change rooms after the game no one gets continuously put down or anything like that, players express their views on the game and how the TEAM played, if people take that personally it is their prerogative. It's all well and good to be sat behind your keyboard saying that people are selfish and that they are no good for the club but frustration would be felt by these individuals If they feel as though they are alienated by their team because of their passion for the game and belief in their team mates abilities.

Change has seemed to be the theme for Centrals this year- new players new coaches ect maybe it's time for a change in perspective.

south by far have the best home court vibe their panther army although at times very politically incorrect are funny and enthusatic and add a load of colour to the game. the closeness of the crowd to the court also adds to the ambience rather than the sterility of some stadiums. So far this season I have seen games at Mars, St Clair, Adelaide Hills, Hillcrest, M/Vale and Port Adelaide yet to see Plex but I am sure I will before end of season.
