Thanks shufflin - I was wrong about the colours anyway - Noarlunga Celtics were maroon and white, not green and white. They merged with Tigers to become NCT in about the mid 80s I reckon.

To answer your questions, I don't know about the initial colours, but Cheltenham became Woodville.

Port Adelaide or Port Districts, cannot remember their exact name. I believe an import, name of ? Smith tried to change to them from West Adelaide but immigration stopped it as it contravened his visa. Possibly the other Phil smythe was the coach - it was all a long time ago.

Fred Heaton broadcast originally. father of Bill Heaton who was making his name with the Bearcats about 1967/68. Ian day may have followed on or even been with Ian Day.
Keith Miller was stadium manager. Used to help him change the light bulbs using a VERY long pole. keith coached the 1964 Olympic team and west Adelaide junior teams.
Werner Linde would come in every lunch time and shoot for an hour.

I'd been thinking then of how it might've been...
Barry Richardson.. who later was chairman of sixers and sacked the coach after we won the 86 championship
.. I think....
I seem to recall playing in green n white,,
talkin' bout starting up Woodville , and later playing in pink for a team called Pi...s , instead..
do you remember who it was? We wore pink.

5DN broadcast District games on Thursday nights. Dog35 is correct about Fred Heaton being the commentator.

Can anyone remember the little sign that said something like "Any player who has been training and has not left the Stadium before half time of the first game must pay 2/6d." This was directed at District players whose club would train before the start of the night's competition.
I remember that we trained at one end of court 1 and North trained at the other on Monday nights from about 5.30pm until 6.30 in the early 60's. So, we had to be out of the stadium to avoid paying the princely sum of 2/6d.
The board, still with its sign ended up filling a window space on the back wall of the canteen.

The 60's....like a flying saucer landed,,,,everybody heard about it, but very few actually saw it.
I love hearing about it.
I wouldn't call myself a Basketballer.
That might put me in a class with people like Maher and Green. Hey , name them - Michael Ahmatt, Werner Linde, Mike Dancis, Glen Marsland, Scot Davey,Ken Richardson.......
It was the only thing I could do.
I wasn't good at anything else.
I reminisced about my early days.
I wasn't a very good Police Cadet but the police bus would come to Fort Largs and take us to St Clair to play basketball games all day on wednesdays.
How good was that. Getting paid to play the game I loved.... Easter carnivals..I love this game.

I remember when Mrs Brand used to be in the ticket booth & Mr & Mrs Shipway used to run the canteen. As juniors we used to clean the floor on the 1st court on Sat morning prior to games so that we could practice for 1/2 hr with 2 lights on.
Bill Heaton's real claim to fame, is that his first score in competition was for the opposition when playing "Biddyball" for Westies. he got the ball & took off on a fast break with everyone yelling at him. He actually turned out to be pretty good, despite that begi Ning.
