NBL 2010/11 Awards finalists announced

NBL END OF SEASON AWARDS FINALISTS REVEALED
As the National Basketball League braces itself for a thrilling conclusion to the 2010/11 iiNet NBL Championship season this weekend, the finalists for several major award categories have been revealed.

The top five votegetters for the Coach of the Year (the Lindsay Gaze Trophy), Most Improved Player, Best Sixth Man, Rookie of the Year and Best Defensive Player awards have been announced. The eventual winners will be named at 'The MVP' awards ceremony in Melbourne at Crown Casino’s Palladium Room on Monday night.

For the Rookie, Most Improved, Best Defensive and Sixth Man categories, each of the NBL’s nine teams were able to nominate a maximum of two players from their own roster for each award. All nine NBL head coaches were eligible for the Lindsay Gaze Trophy.

Voting for the award winners was conducted at the conclusion of Round 22 of the regular season, with the Head Coach, one Assistant Coach and one Captain from each team having the chance to cast 3-2-1 votes for their preferred choices. Voters were not allowed to vote for players from their own team in the final balloting process. The player who receives the highest vote total when all ballots are counted will be declared the winner.

Other awards that will be announced this Monday night include the major prize of the Andrew Gaze Trophy for the NBL’s Most Valuable Player, as well as the All-NBL First, Second and Third Team and Referee of the Year.

‘The MVP’ awards ceremony will see the elite of Australia’s basketball family in attendance as the annual awards for both the National Basketball League and Women’s National Basketball League are presented in a combined ceremony at the esteemed Palladium Room at Crown Casino in Melbourne on Monday 4 April. Tickets for ‘The MVP’ are still available by clicking here. The event will be live streamed over the internet through NBL partner iiNet, and will be available to watch on nbl.com.au.

COTY: McLeod (his team is terrible but strewth, they fight hard)

ROTY: Madgen (but only if Gaze presents the trophy to Ben Madgden)

6th: Braswell

DPOTY: Martin (if they allow blatant thuggery, Robbins remains a chance)

MIP: Forman by a street (don't be unnecessarily humble Isaac - your boy Oscar has been exceptional this season)

Have to agree with Isaac's line there. Agree that Lamanis will probably get the nod on the COTY award.

How can a team have two players eligible for best sixth man?

Libertine, Thats exactly why the Breakers are so successful.
You know a team runs deep, when there are 2 players on the bench who would be starters anywhere else in the NBL...

Who attends? Are all teams required to attend or just the melbourne teams and those nominated?

I don't think all teams go but might be wrong. Nominated players go, I assume (Forman is going, I know that much). Not sure about the Tigers - Walker is going, but he is listed for ROTY so might be going as a nominee.

Could ask them on Twitter.
