What's turned around the Crocs?

Townsville sit in second position with a 13-8 record. There was a lot of talk about Cairns' home record earlier in the season, but the Crocs are 10-1 at home.

Prior to December 23rd however, they were 6-7 and under .500. Rosell Ellis played his first game on December 23rd.

Since then, the Crocs are 7-1 with their sole loss being on the road in Perth.

Ellis is a PF with the height of a SG, but he is not known at all for his shooting ability. His season stat line is 5.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 1.1 SPG. 41% FG, 44% FT, 1/2 FT. 1.8 TPG. He's only (and barely) cracked double figures in scoring twice.

How much of the Crocs' turnaround could be attributed to his hustle? On another note, this 5.9 and 5.0 guy averaged about 18 PPG across two seasons in the league previously. He averaged 28.5 PPG across two games in 2008. That's a huge drop down to 5.9 PPG.

What else was it that got the Crocs back on track?

Starting to go to Schenscher a bit more too than they were earlier in the season.

From a glance, his FGA numbers look pretty consistent across the season? Someone keen might want to graph it with a trend line...

Isaac,

Over the Crocs first 13 games (6-7 win loss record) Schenscher was averaging 9.3 FGA per game.

Over the Crocs last 8 games (7-1) Schenscher has been averaging 10.9 FGA per game.

They have a legit centre and a PG that is happy to distribute, with just enough decent shooters, this team is much better than the team that competed against the Hawks in the semis last season.

Easier schedule maybe (Haven't checked)?

I mean, they are still 3-7 on the road...

It was late in the evening and there was a Townsville player on Overtime , last night, who thought it was Schenscher.

( ' Schenscher phoned up and asked for a lifeline.' He told us. ' If you're Luke Schenscher you don't have to do that. We jumped at the chance to have him.')

It's all on the defensive end in my opinion... Rosell has added a belief and toughness on D.

The other thing is the team gelling together. That was the key in signing Rosell, he know the system, knows some of the guys and didn't take long for him to settle in.

Rosell has a very different role from when he was here last time. We had him playing centre, on the low block, primary scorer and relied on him for big boards. Now he sets great picks, gets boards at both ends and helps Schenscher bang the bigs.

The increase in Luke's numbers would also be attributed to Rosell because he has a bit more freedom now.

What do u think ?

Anon '525, bit of a bump, could well be part of it.

First part of the season doesn't look like it was unusually rough - games against Blaze, Kings, 36ers, etc.

Paul Woolpert!

A legit coach who compliments Trev & i'd be suprised if he doesnt get a head coach role next season.

Unfortunately Paul has just returned to the USA for personal/family reasons...an illness in his wife's family.

Crawford has been GOOD since Christmas also. Would be interesting to see how his numbers have improved since Freeman left. Also of note is Crawfords defensive efforts on the opposing SG/SF.

A question would be....
Like in previous seasons Townsville seem to get rolling around the New Years Eve game then tend to roll along until the finals begin and things start to shake...

My question is who is going to step up and be a 2nd and 3rd scorer to Schenscher when the tough finals defense appears...

I don't rate Cedar that highly yet, inconsistent.
Crawford has never been a reliable 2nd scorer.
Hinder is not offensive minded
Blalock is a passer.
As is Crosswell.

^ don't worry about it Bob, go back to ozhoops, spread your negativity there, but still show your fake support at games.

Again Crawford came up BIG. Career best form.

Crocs ball movement has been outstanding lately. Very Euro.

It's a combination of things. Rosell Ellis returning and bringing in Paul Woolpert have been big contributers. The team is starting to gel together alot better, everyone is on the same page. Lack of injuries has also helped.

New Zealand have just found themselves in a mini-slump lately. Today at Wollongong I wasn't too impressed, and they are ripe for the picking for the Crocs this thursday. That is followed by a return bout in Townsvile the following round.

If Townsville can get those - and there's no reason that they can't on current form - then they get a nice little psychological edge going into the playoffs. The two teams have only met once thus far this season - the result being a big (17 point) win to the Crocs at home.

NZ-Crocs will be live on OneHD this Thursday, and should be a ripper.

Hard to disagree with that. The Breakers looked very flat last night (save for Penney, mostly). CJ looked like he was struggling to care about the result. Not going to be upset if a TV game is a real spectacle or if the Crocs show them up.

I thought Ervin was impressive in the open court. His hang-time on some of those moves to the bucket is incredible.

That's two big blow-out wins at home for the Hawks against top three teams. Wonder how much we can take from that about the strength of the Crocs, given how easily they dealt with them?

What will hurt Wollongong from here is the head-to-head with their nearest rivals on the ladder. But they can't argue about the run home - 'destiny in their hands' is the easy NBL cliche of this time of year.

Ervin moved freely , must've been injured before.
Glen Saville is handy and Forman impressive.
Bruton played like he was injured but he didn't even bother to look at the coach's board or listen , at the last time out.. looking at the crowd..
On present form , Crocs would beat NZ comfortably on Thursday.

Breakers defense has been very ordinary recently especially the on-ball. CJ & Penney's movement has been woeful. Breakers are very very fortunate to have Vukonas hustle n muscle and Bouchers bag-o-dirty tricks to compensate.
