Where's the Refs?

I know the greenies are stopping duck shooting at Bool Lagoon and koala shooting on K.I., but did they declare open season on refs. They were scarce on Friday night, with some teams warned that they may have to provide umps for their games.
All in the same week that insurance is dropped too! I hear this ump situation has been coming for awhile and no quick remedy in sight. Many fingers pointed at some place called the ivory castle, or is it the DOME?
The players and spectators will wear the blame again, but there needs to be agood look inside this DOME

if each club had to nominate an umpire for every two teams it fields (e.g. is norwood have 40 Junior teams, they must nominate 20 umpires), this would force the clubs to take responsibilty in recruiting, training, and providing umpires for their games.

there is a difference between a freelance ref and someone the club has "supplied"

there is several courses going on at present - some new - but very junior refs are filtering through on staurdays - but no way friday nights yet

rather see some bigger ref names out and about friday nights - even if it is just a cameo

Might also force the clubs to actually take some responsibility and action towards stamping out umpire abuse.

'rather see some bigger ref names out and about friday nights - even if it is just a cameo"

can't they who have served their time and spent countless hours etc have a life occassionally or do you wish to burn them out totally too?

I agree with the last post. The referees that have "been there and done that" do need to have a life of their own. However most of these guys/girls that I have asked to help out on a Friday night have helped once or twice a month to get me out of a jam. And they have been of national league quality.

Example.....

Saturday morning - 32 degrees - tin shed (aka m/vale) referees 4th game for the morning - solo.

Coach A abuses this referee constantly through out the game, Team B spectators get the UIC to watch the abuse. Coach A notices this, stops abuse. UIC leaves to deal with other problem (common occurance at m/vale it seems) Caoch A fires up again.

After the game Coach A verbally abuses the UIC because he only had one referee.... didnt bother to listen to any explanation just worried about abusing the UIC.......

Junior referee has now quit.

Next time they play they chances are they wont have a referee.

Now tell me that referee abuse hasnt hurt the system........

A number of suggested solutions.
Restrict the number of Divisions you have participating in BASA competitions so that you can provide the required number of referees, clubs can then take responsibility for organising domestic competitions, as a number are doing now.

Only Schedule games at 3 or 4 of the venues each week, on a rotating basis, then you can ensure there are appropriate numbers of umpires and more importantly umpire's in charge to supervisor the behaviour of parents and coaches.

BASA need to ensure that umpires are better remunerated, trained and supported.

The problem needs to be addressed by BASA. The people who are paid to run the Business of basketball in South Australia. Most people in management positions have Key Performance Indicators and for someone running a sporting organisation having umpires is one of them. If this was another business were production (games) stopped becuase an essential component was unavailable (referees) management would have to fix the problem quickly e.g. 24-48 hours or risk being fired. Blaming the volunteers in the organisation who by their very nature unpaid does not cut it.
