Is ONE-HD going to be axed?

This doesn't sound good.

'James Packer is expected to demand an overhaul of strategy at Ten Network Ltd, which could include scrapping the ONE HD sports channel and outdoor advertising unit, according to media reports'

This would be a big kick in the guts to the NBL, just as things were starting to look bright.

lets hope not. that would be devastating to the NBL

This could be devastating for the NBL. However, Ten have a contract - and Packer has a relationship with Fox - there are a couple of "outs" for Ten and Packer, one of which would be to shift the nbl content back to fox. Of course we do not know what is

Awful similarities here.... who remembers BA doing a sponsorship deal with Ansett - then Ansett falling over and BA looking like crap because it it...when it was largely not BA's fault at all.

Yeah, and it had burnt bridges with Qantas.

Would be a short term decision though. The fact that ONE pretty much breaks even already, with its portfolio still very much building, so soon after its inception shows the potential it has. Other networks are making profit from their second channels but there is only so much potential in re-runs and b grade shows.

If it happened it would be a big kick in the guts for basketball, at least in the short term, and who knows what form it would last into the long term. As HO pointed out, a lot would depend on how the contract between Ten and the NBL is worded and how much the NBL could afford to spend in court if it came to that.

This has become a concern in the last few days as we keep hearing the name of James Packer.

This will be a brutal blow to the sport of basketball and sports on FTA overall if they do this.

It's too early and inappropriate to cut OneHD. It's still growing and the potential is still there.

Actually i do agree with that Paul. there is only so much that re runs can do for you. and i gotta admit One HD needs stay but they should change some of the stuff they put on, for example NASCAR, im sure there are a few die hard red neck fans here in Aus but seriously the majority arent watching it same with the bull riding they show. play more good sports, and when nothing is on play re runs, and i know they are doing that at the moment with the NBA they play the occasional awesome game from the past. Keep that up and it will keep crowds. I bet One HD rates higher than the Fox Sports channels, for the simple fact that anyone can watch it. whats with Foxtel trying to take all sports. GET LOST! even if they get all sports im still not gonna waste my money on foxtel!

I read something earlier this year that indicated ONE achieved about the same ratings as all the sports channels on Fox combined. That is prob one of Packer's motives if this is true. Of course that is average, and for every AFL, NBA, Formula One, soccer or NBL broadcast that rates well, there are other shows that have very few people watching.

Still, with the recent addition of NBL, EPL and Rugby Union I would say ONE is moving in the right direction.

Seems he will leave it 19.9% ownership as he has support from other owners to come onto the board.
As the owner of Foxsports - he knows what levels to bid for Cricket,Rugby,AFL rights and has been in discussions with the Govt. re what sports must be on FTA.

Another possibility is he got wind of the Fed Gov's review of sport on FTA. If that is leaning heavily in favour of sport on FTA then he may feel the need to have ONE as an ally to Fox Sports rather than a competitor.

All speculation at this stage...

i tell you what im not liking this one bit. He definitely has a reason for this and i believe its to help Foxtel and not the ten network. if he thought the channel was doing something wrong then so be it, leave them to do stuff wrong, but i bet he is feeling threatened about how truly well One HD is doing as a sports channel. thats my theory

the thing is, if he has ownership in TEN and FOX, wouldn't he want them both to do well?

- They wouldnt want him on board if he was looking to scrap one would they? Meaning he might not be looking to scrap it if he is being let into the board rather that busting his way in??

I guess he would want them both to do well, but sometimes you need to spend money to make money. Maybe he see's it better to spend the money to get in the door, kill his competition then in turn make more money than what he spent because people are getting foxtel as they have no access to sport. although i know the government is regulating how much sport can go on pay tv, im sure they wont care too much about basketball they will only regulate afl and nrl and major events like olympics and world cups.

i really hope ONE HD is left alone, but its hard to tell with all the speculation, would be nice to hear some facts. dont take what im saying as gospel im just thinking about the worst case scenario. people like Packer in my opinion always have their own agenda and no worried about whats the good thing to do. Packer only cares about Packer

paul, all the analysis this morning points to Ten not being nearly as proftable as it used to be, and One HD as a Digital channel just breaking even versus 9's and &'s digital variants being more profitable based on much much cheaper content.

Packer gets two things from killing off One HD and buying into Ten potentially. A) he gets rid of the foxsports competitor, in which he has a much larger stake, and b) he might get to integrate Sky (which he also has a signficant interest in) into Ten in someway, rather than allowing ten's current plans to upscale its news coverage. Perhaps Sky becomes the digital channel taking the place of One HD.

HO thats what i have read as well. sounds as if his plan is to stop One HD being a sport orientated channel and make it a 24 hour news channel.

Talk about killing off ratings!

The agenda is Ten getting the Cricket, Rugby, AFL rights and Packer knows the levels and Govt directions
(as the owner of Foxsports- I mentioned before)
ACCC will have an interest - but 19.9% would be allowable.
Cricket is within 2 years.
I can't imagine One being axed overnight - would remain for a number of years or indefinately.

Correct HO, but there have also been questions asked of the Federal Government as to whether their review has been leaked, prompting Packer's sudden movement.

It is all speculation at the moment, so any number of motives are possible.

When you read it really quickly and your wondering about this packer and One HD situation you skip straight past the "Back" part of the first word

Not 'leaked' - paul. - As the owner of Foxsports he is involved with Govt. discussions.
It doesn't follow that he knows EXACTLY what sports must remain on FTA - but would have some info.

Actually AW, the article says that One made a profitable contribution to Ten's overall result, it does not say One had plenty of profits.

I know people have been saying that it costs money for camera's etc for sporting so there is alot of overheads. and so its cheaper to play repeating crap. but in saying that, alot of the stuff One HD does show is cheap, they dont have 7 and 9 competing against them for events unless its something major. one thing i have been really loving is the formula 1 everywhere else in the world they would be fighting for rights, over here i bet channel 10 got it cheap as no one else was keen to air it except for probably just the Australian race. And some of these rights channel ten might be getting for the same cost as the other channels pay for old tv shows. Would be good to have some figures but im just saying what i heard a while ago.

Cheers for that Isaac, its good to get some fact in the discussion. There are so many different angles that he could take but that sounds reasonable that if he wants to get AFL he will need to share the rights with someone

A-list events like Melb cup must be shown live on FTA main channel
B-list events - FTA have first right but option to show on digital channel and that's new rule, which would be pretty good for OneHD sports channel.

From what I hear, the NBL clubs are not overly stressed about this Packer business. Should their One deal be scrapped, it would need to be paid out. That's one thing, but One would have to pay out all the other deals too (NBA, NFL, etc) and the sheer numbers suggest it's probably unlikely.

Should the NBL get paid out, I guess it's feasible that they use the money to buy FTA time even if telecasts are slightly delayed now and then.

Looks like they'll do more news on Ten , more sport on One and shift The Simpsons and the like to their new youth channel 11.
