Australian "Euro Watch" - 2010/11 Season

Thought it would be worthwhile starting up a thread to follow the Aussies plying their trade in Europe in the 2010/11 season. We can all therefore keep a track of how the Aussie boys are doing.

There were some big movements in the off-season, with Aleks Maric moving from Partizan to Panathinaikos, Matt Nielsen from Valencia to Olympiakos, Brad Newley from Besiktas to Lietuvos Rytas, and Aron Baynes from Lietuvos Rytas to Oldenburg.

The Aussies playing in Europe this coming season as far as I have ascertained are as follows:

David Barlow / CAI Zaragoza / Spain
Aron Baynes / EWE Baskets Oldenburg / Germany
Joe Ingles / CB Granada & Barcelona / Spain
Aleks Maric / Panathinaikos Athens / Greece
Steven Markovic / Radnicki Kragujevac / Serbia
Brad Newley / Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius / Lithuania
Matt Nielsen / Olympiakos Pireus / Greece
AJ Ogilvy / Besiktas Istanbul / Turkey
Liam Rush / Sundsvall Dragons / Sweden
Nathan Jawai / BC Partizan Belgrade / Serbia
Luke Nevill / Triumph / Russia

If I have missed anyone of "note", please post their name, club and country where they are playing this season.

Those Aussies playing in the prestigious Euroleague competition this coming season include Jawai (Partizan - Group A), Nielsen (Olympiakos – Group B), Newley (Lietuvos Rytas – Group C), and Maric (Panathinaikos – Group D).

Those playing with teams attempting to qualify for the Eurocup competition include Baynes (Oldenburg) and Ogilvy (Besiktas).

Please post any results and individual performances or dates and times where games can be watched on TV or live online in this thread as you come across them - if they have not been posted already.

What I like about Ingles' performances thus far, apart from the dominant all-round nature of his contribution, is that he has shot far more twos than threes. He has been rewarded with a better shooting percentage and many trips to the charity stripe. The dude is 6'8", long and fairly athletic, with a decent handle. He should continue to take it hard to the rack rather than relying on his streaky three point shooting. this approach will likely give him more time and space for the three when the opportunity presents itself.

Spot on AB4EVA - Ingles (and Newley) both need to play to their strengths and get into the paint for the national team. Ingles especially has shown that he is a decent foul shooter. The Boomers need to quit seeing themselves as a perimeter oriented team. The days of the Gaze/ Heal long range barrage are now a distant memory!

Baynes played a better game that his number showed against the Artland Dragons. He played good D and bumped a lot of players around. First time I have seen him live. He is a big unit.

I missed a game Brad Newley had played in this season against CSKA Moscow in which his team lost 61-80. Newley had 9 points (1/3 3PT) to go with 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 2 turnovers in 34 minutes.

Newley has played another 2 games since my last post. In a 75-68 win over Neptunas, Newley scored 4 points (0/1 3PT), had 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 turnover in just 17 minutes. They then backed it up with a massive 83-56 win against Naglis-Adakris in which Newley scored 11 points (1/3 3PT) alongside 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal and just 2 turnovers in playing 27 minutes.

Nathan Jawai's Partizan had a good win over rivals Hemofarm 77-66 in the Adriatic League. Big Nate scored 8 points (4/7 FG) to go with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and just 1 turnover in 21 minutes.

Liam Rush had a massive game for Sundsvall Dragons in their 96-98 loss to Solna. He racked up 27 points (3/5 3PT) alongside 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and just 2 turnovers in playing 37 minutes.

David Barlow's Zaragoza took on Joe Ingles’s Granada overnight, winning 89-75 to record their first win of the season. Barlow had his best game to date this season, scoring 16 points on a hot 5/7 from long range alongside 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 29 minutes. Ingles on the other hand had a quiet game, scoring just 8 points (0/4 3PT) to go with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 4 turnovers in playing 27 minutes.

Meanwhile in Greece, the Greek league is in crisis, with players voting to go on a strike for an unknown period of time. The bodies meet again on 18-Oct to hopefully sort out the mess with centres primarily around finances. This leaves Australian Boomers Aleks Maric and Matt Nielsen still waiting to taste their first official action with their new Greek powerhouse teams.

I forgot to add that David Barlow's Zaragoza were playing Euroleague champions Barcelona overnight and Joe Ingles' Granada faced Caja Laboral in the Spanish ACB.

Big news for AJ Ogilvy's Besiktas team as they have announced that Allen Iverson has agreed in principle to sign an incentive-laden, two-year, $4 million contract to be signed by next week. Iverson’s contract will give him an opt-out clause after this season, but there is no escape clause during the season for Iverson to leave Turkey and return to the NBA. He is expected to make his debut as early as 6 November against Bornova.

He was easily the highest ranked player in the game (30), and would well and truly be in line for the player of the week award.

Joe Ingles's CB Granada won the battle of the winless teams, defeating Estudiantes 77-74 in the Spanish ACB. Ingles started and scored just 3 points on 1/7 shooting (0/3 3PT, 1/2 FT) but had 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals but 5 turnovers in the win.

AJ Ogilvy’s Beskitas lost to Aliaga 80-95 in the Turkish League. Ogilvy scored 9 points on 4/9 shooting (1/1 FT) to go with 5 rebounds, 1 block and 2 turnovers in just 17 minutes. Allen Iverson is not expected to suit up for Besiktas until after November 8.

Aron Baynes' EWE Baskets Oldenberg lost to ALBA 75-77 in overtime in the German league. Baynes put in a very efficient offensive display, scoring 10 points on a perfect 5/5 shooting. He also had 4 rebounds, 1 block and 4 turnovers in playing just 11 minutes as he was again limited due to foul trouble - continuing an ongoing theme.

Ater Majok’s FMV Isikspor lost to Genc Banvit 60-74 in the Turkish 2nd Division. Jawai was matched up with big Sofiklis Schortsinitis in the battle of the big boys. Sofo also had foul trouble and had 6p on 1/5fg and 8r in 29mins. Pretty close to a 0-0 draw!

Bad home loss for Partizan, and Lietuvos Rytas' loss to Cholet from France could well see them sit last in their group - neither Newley or Jawai will be progressing to the round of 16 by the looks of it.

Reports out of Europe are suggesting that Joe Ingles is set to sign with European powerhouse Regal Barcelona who are one of the favourites to win the Spanish ACB and Euroleague titles.

This from www.eurobasket.com:

According to http://basket-spot.blogspot.com, there are two new signings from two ACB clubs. Regal Barcelona, relatively shocked against Fenerbahce at Palau Blaugrana, reinforced the squad with Joe Ingles, the CB Granada player. The injury of Gianluca Basile and the below par performance from Ricky Rubio probably made Javi Pascual take that decision. Ingles played with his national team at the World Championships in ?stanbul, where they were eliminated at last 16 stage against Slovenia

Partizan have confirmed the release of import point guard Oliver Lafayette and have replaced him with Curtis Jerrells (formerly Baylor). Butr I can't find anywhere where it mentions Jawai's head is also on the chopping block. Although given his inconsistency and profile, it would not surprise many if this was to be the case.

I am not surprised that Baynes produced those numbers given significant minutes. I am surprised that he started and that he did not foul out well before 29 minutes was up. Was his start due to an injury to a teammate? Anyhow, it's a very positive outcome for Baynes. Hopefully he can repeat these types of performances.

He is only averaging around 18 minutes a game as he contsantly gets into foul trouble.

thanks again for all your hard work, much appreciated.

Just wondered where these leagues sit in comparison to the NBL?

Seems like we have a few imports that come here and struggle more than they do in Europe.

Ill have a crack at it for you Wayne, but this is just my opinion.

The NBA is well clear of other national leagues, the Spanish ABC is the best of the rest, then comes a group of leagues that are quite comparable headed by Greece and Russia, but also containing Australia, Italy, Israel and Turkey.

The there is another group of very good leages half a step below that headed by France and Germany, but also including Lithuania, Serbia, Croatia and possibly Poland, which I havent seen but am told is an underrated league.

There are also the composite leagues, which have reps from different European comps - the Euroleague is clearly the best of these and not that far behind the NBA, then comes the Adriatic league, Eurocup, Eurochallenge and VTB United league in northern Europe, and these are good leagues that I think are a similar standard to NBL playoff basketball.

Outside of Europe the Puerto Rican, Argentine, Brazilian leagues are solid but below the group the NBL is in, while the PBL and NBA D in North America have a lot of talent in them but are not necessarily known for their team play.

In a nutshell, just considering the national leagues, I would have the NBL somewhere between 5-8 but not that far off 3rd or 4th, so it is right up there.

Paul-The adriatic league is right up there with the Spanish league and better than the Italian and Greek leagues as the Adriatic League consists of 3 euroleague teams and 3 eurocup teams. Where do you think all of those players from Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia come from???

Wayne-You cant really compare the NBL and Europe using stats. The style of basketball is totally different because in the NBL they play alot more open TRYING to replicate the NBA style of run and gun. In europe the game is alot slower and more of a team game with plenty of pick and rolls.
If the NBL and the Boomers played more the european style im sure we would see better results in all competitions as that style of game more siuts out physical capabilities.
To play the NBA style of game most of the players would need to be alot more athletic.
Furthermore the defence in the NBL is VERY VERY poor compared to Europe.

Rankings below based on teams from leagues who would win more games overall and quality of basketball in my opinion.

1.NBA
2.Euroleague (top 24 teams from euro leagues below)
3.Eurocup (top 25-56 teams from euro leagues below)
4.Spain
5.Adriatic(top 14 teams Serbia, Slovenia, Cro, Bosnia)
6.Greece
7.Russia
8.Italy
9.VTB (top 12 teams from Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine)
10.Turkey
11.France
12.Isreal
13.NBL
14.Germany
15.Sweden

Wow I am surprised!!!

I remember years ago when there was a champions tourny (with an NBA team), vaguely remember Perth playing in it we were close to being the second best league in the world?

Maybe it is rose coloured glasses on my part.

Have we slipped so far?

Our top teams couldnt compete in Europe?

Thanks everyone for all the info, love reading it

Any such list is misleading. An example is the Greek A1 League - only the top few teams in the Greek League are really of any substantial quality and the rest IMO are either on par with our weaker teams or in fact well below NBL standard.

I would have our NBL above Israel, France and Italy (who are really bad right now). I'd be interested in Paul's thoughts on ranking leagues, but really it is not that straightforward.

Panathinaikos lost to Efes Pilsen 78-79 in Euroleague. Aleks Maric again missed due to injury. In what some pundits are calling the game of the season, Efes Pilsen's win with a lay-up at the buzzer ensures they make the top 16, while the Greek giants remain in first place in Group D with a 6-3 record.

Partizan defeated Asseco Prokom Gdynia 61-59 in Euroleague. Nathan Jawai came off the bench and scored 4 points on 1/3 shooting (2/2 FT) to go with 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 turnover in just 15 minutes. Partizan needed the win to remain in the hunt for the final 16.

LC, I posted my thoughts a little bit higher. Anon isnt too far off what I said but I think he/she has an interest in promoting Markovic, who is really finding some good form and doesn't need to be promoted at the expense of the NBL.

The big thing to remember are there are good teams in all these leagues who could beat teams from other leagues on a given night - the level of basketball is very level across the top leagues.

I too used to think that the Adriatic league was very good on the same assumption that Anon made on the best players from Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia etc playing in it, but I have watched a bit of it lately and changed my mind – it is a good comp but not above the other good comps around.

Of the 36 players who represented those three countries at this year’s WCs, only 10 of them play in the Adriatic league and only 4 of them had major roles – 10 guys from the NBL were at the WCs and Penney performed better than any of the Adriatic guys, and Vukona and Abercrombie were better than six or seven of them.

Furthermore, while the Adriatic league does have three Euroleague teams, Ljubljana is a good team this year, but went 1-9 last year, Partizan strong last year but middle of the road this year, and Cibona are terrible (0-9) and wouldn’t make the NBL playoffs.

Their three Eurocup teams all have 3-2 records. When you consider guys like Anstey, Nielsen, Newley, Draper, Ere, Darden, Shannon, Low etc have all been very good players at Eurocup level you realise it isnt really above the NBL at all – and certainly not 11 positions! As I said earlier, I think the Eurocup and Adriatic leagues are at about the level of the NBL playoffs.

People can look at the performances of Draper (who is absolutely dominating) and Markovic (who was behind Bruton, Gibson and Martin at the Boomers) this year in the Adriatic League, and Shannon a couple of years back who was a standout at both ends of the floor and make up their own minds.

My last few points, (because I am waffling and should really be doing work!) are that the French league is not better than the NBL!!!! And the idea that the NBL is a no defence league was once true but is now outdated.

Players regularly put up similar numbers in good European competitions than NBL despite the point that Anon made that there are less possessions in most European games and generally fewer players touch the ball and have scoring opportunities on each possession. The level of defensive intensity and disruption in the NBL is probably higher than all national leagues in Europe bar Spain.

My rankings, with non-national leagues in brackets:

NBA
(Euroleague)
Spain
Greece, Russia, (Eurocup, Adriatic, VTB)
Australia, Israel, Turkey, Italy
France, Germany, Lithuania, Serbia (FIBA Americas)
Croatia, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Poland

So Wayne, in my opinion the NBL is comparable to all leagues except the NBA, Euroleague and Spanish ACB, but the top NBL clubs would probably still make the playoffs in the ACB.

The Wildcats did come third in the world club championship in 93, but remember how far that Wildcats team (and the Tigers and Magic) was ahead of the majority of the NBL at the time. That Perth team would still be one of the top teams even now, whereas the majority of the competition from that time would be down the bottom with the Kings!

Just on the Spanish league being ranked below the Adriatic and Eurocup, Gran Canaria is a mid-level Spanish team but is consistently a good Eurocup team. Valencia, who went out in the Spanish QFs last year won the Eurocup. Spain has 5 Euroleague teams and last year had 4 - three made the QFs and Barcelona was the champion. The Adriatic league had one QF team, Partizan who had a standout year for an Adriatic team.

If you are interested in how ex-NBL imports go in Europe all their performances over the past two seasons are listed in the NBLers OS thread at ozhoopsboards.com, and it is mostly impressive reading, the majority of them are certainly world class.

"Best center of the year is one of the biggest revelations of the previous season: Aleks Maric. The big man had an impressive year with Partizan Belgrade which, surprisingly, reached the Euroleague Final Four losing just in the overtime against Olympiacos in the semifinal. Maric helped the Serbian powerhouse to win Adriatic League and Serbian league. In the summer the center moved to Panathinaikos."

Besiktas have wielded the axe, apparently unhappy with missing the round of 16 in the Eurocup and their pedestrian domestic record of 7-5 for eighth place in the Turkish League.

Head coach Burak Biyiktay has been sacked and replaced with Ergin Ataman, a man who has coached Efes Pilsen and Besiktas in the past.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the team and, more specific to our interests, how it affects AJ Ogilvy.

I saw that AB4EVA...interesting times ahead for Besiktas, but at least AJ's form has been rock solid over the past 4-5 games and being elevated to a starter's role in the process. Besiktas have now signed Ergan Ataman as coach and he has subsequently recruited Centre/Forward Vladimir Dragicevic to the team for the rest of the season in place of of Fedor Likholitov who has had a knee operation.

Olympiakos defeated VAP Kolossos 71-68 in the Greek A1 League. Matt Nielsen did not play.

LC you need to talk to Basketball Australia and do their work for them.

Basketball Australia should be promoting the fact we have so many Australians overseas and showing young athletes that basketball is a way to travel to world, unlike the AFL.

BA should be issuing the above as press releases all across Australia.

We simply don't do enough to promote our game, then complain when mainstream media don't give basketball any coverage.

From FIBA.com titled: "Ingles best Barca game"

Barcelona broke open a close game against Power Electronics Valencia on Sunday, winning 85-67.

Australia international Joe Ingles, who joined the club from Granada earlier in the campaign, poured in a game-high 18 points and Juan Carlos Navarro added 17.

Ingles drew praise from Barca coach Xavier Pascual.

"He is a player who is able to help us a lot," Pascual said.

"Today, he had a complete game on defense and in attack. I think he has had his best game since coming here and was solid in every way."

The Euroleague quarter finals commence tonight...and the games involving Aussies are as follows:

- Olympiakos vs Montepaschi (Nielsen)
- Barcelona vs Panathinaikos (Ingles & Maric)

All three teams featuring Aussies are all on the same side of the draw, so it is foreseeable that the winner of the Barcelona vs Panathinaikos series could take on Olympiakos (if they get through) in the semi finals. Whilst I would like Barca to get through over Panathinaikos, imagine an all-Greek semi final match-up? They would have to lock their fans out! Even more so given that the Greek League final between the two has been postponed indefinitely due to their concern for violence!

In other games tonight:

- Lietuvos Rytas vs Perlas in the Lithuanian League (Newley)

That's right, but I am not sure it is the reason Nielsen isnt playing. He has been playing most Greek league games since late January from memory, but has only played the one directly after Olympiakos' Euroleague elimination.

They may be resting his old body for the Greek league playoffs?

Saw this game and Kickert made two important baskets in overtime after missing a couple of wide open threes nearing the end of regulation. Impressed by his defence and board work, which have been weaknesses. Could definitely be a very good reserve or role playing starting centre in the NBL, although he very well may get another contract from his strong finish to this season.

Good game to watch too despite being low scoring (64-64 end of reg). Hadnt seen the Polish league before this year but there are a few good teams in there.

Brad Newley had 5p on 2/7 and 4r in 21 mins as LR Vilnius were thrashed 95-69 to lose the Lithuanian GF 4-1, highlighting the gap between the two power teams this year. I suspect there will be some significant changes in Vilnius this off-season, and think there is a good chance Newley will be looking for a new home.
