World Champs: Boomers vs Germany 31-Aug

The Boomers play game 3 tonight at 2:00am AEST against a German team who have lost to Argentina by 4 and defeated Serbia by 1 in double overtime.

This could be the game that decides whether Australia can finish in the top 3 or whether they end up in the least desired 4th spot in Group A.

Post any live online links and comments in this thread.

Go Boomers!

My prediction - Australia by 9
(I missed the Argentina result by just 2 points!)

Result depends on what Aussie team shows up on the night.

Argentina team? - We win 10 ish

JOrdan team? - we loose 10 ish

Somewhere in the middle? Close Game

Just can't help but think that the culture of Aus teams need to change.

We no longer need to live and die on the 3pt as we did (successfully I might add) in the Gaze/Heal era.

Feed the big guys, spread the floor, allow space for the slashing guards we have.

Seems easy on paper I guess

Brown has to fix up his rotation if we want to go deep in this tournament. He can't keep taking out guys that are hot, (Ingles) and leave in guys that are hurting the team (Newley). He took Maric out in Game 1 when he was dominating against Jordan, but persisted with him this morning when it clearly wasn't his night.

answer: give the ball to Andersen at the post. He likes to play in Europe

pwned - What is your issue with Newley? He is one of the most experienced boomers on the team.
I really think Brown's decision to bring him off the bench has disrupted his game - he was a starter in Beijing and was our most consistent player over the tournament, and now he's been replaced in the starting 5 by Gibson who has no European or senior championship experience.

In fairness Newley looks terrible out there. I like him but I'd be playing him as little as I possibly could too.

all in all a very good effort by the boomers, that is one hell of a team they nearly beat!!

the thing that stuck out to me was the start of the second qrt,the offense dried up and was very obvious the combination that started that qrt was wrong(offensively)and left on the court too long.

as for the germans........

to use a quote from my grandfather.."fuck the germans"

Anon 287520 thats a bit OTT.
I agree with Wowee - what the h3ll is Gibson doing starting when he has zero experience? I think Newley and Ingles have shown they are both worth of starting roles. Please Brett, give me a starting (or at least major minute playing) quintet of Mills, Newley, Ingles, Anderson, Maric.

The Boomers need to take a leaf out of the Tall Blacks book.

With only really Penney as a proven International scorer, we can score 84 points against a talented Spanish team.

How? Because our offenses incorporate ball movement; off and on ball screening, hard cuts, ball reversal, kick and penetrate.

Look at Abercrombie scoring 19 against Spain (and you could go back to Vukona scoring 19 against Lithuania), They aren't the most notable scorers at this level, but they get scoring opportunities because of the ball movement and flowing offense that Vucinic runs.

man to man is killing it. having never seen Germany play before not sure if they're an outside shooting team but the Boomers arent giving them any shots.

also pretty sure the German coach just dropped an F-bomb on the timeout cam then...lol

Obviously not working too well if they are, time may tell down the stretch if the Aussies at working harder to get under or over them. Germany just having an off shooting night or defensive pressure good??

good perimeter D by the Aussies. Died off a little toward the end of the half.

The Krauts don't seem to keen to try and score around the basket. They should be attacking the rim if they want to win. If they don't can't really imagine them winning.

Australia thrashed Germany 78-43 this morning in a crucial Group A clash as both teams had 1 win and 1 loss going into the game.

Patty Mills led the way with a game-high 16 points and 7 assists, Aleks Maric had 15, Joe Ingles 10 and David Andersen had 8 & 8.

David Barlow finally saw some minutes and did not disappoint, scoring 8 points including 2/2 from downtown. Mills was 4/5 from 3 point range and Ingles 2/3.

But it was the Boomers disruptive defense that destroyed the Germans.

If we can beat Serbia in our next game, 2nd spot is up for grabs! Go Boomers!

We could actually get first if we beat Serbia and they beat Argentina which is an even money bet. We would then needs points differential to go our way.

Realistically though, 1st, 2nd or 3rd you are getting Brazil, Croatia or Slovenia so it will be a hard game whichever way.

Serbia has a pretty ridiculous points differential after massive wins over Angola and Jordan (they are +92 to Aus +34).

Unless we beat Angola by more than 40 and Serbia by more than 10, and Serbia beats Argentina, I don't think first place is realistically possible.

Second is definitely up for grabs, but only if Serbia loses both of their games, or if Australia beats Serbia and Serbia knocks off Argentina, and Argentina are relegated to third on points differential.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but doesn't point differential only go on the games between the teams that finish equal on points - e.g. Argentina, Australia & Serbia games against one another? If that's the case, then those landslide wins over those other teams will not even matter...

Watching the first 3 quarters of last nights game I thought the officiating was very ordinary with some extremely strange calls! What was that Technical foul called on Newley for just before the half? They said it was flopping, yet all I saw was a moving screen and Newley trying to spin off of it and they called a Technical!!! Ridiculous!
It was a bit like the game against Argentina when Gonzalez elbows Maric or Anderson in the low post on a move, one umpire calls an offensive foul, the other umpire threatens to call a technical foul for flopping!!!
I think it's great that they are warning players on flopping as Europeans are renown for it but don't get carried away.
I also haven't seen a lot from Maric to see how he was all-euroleague first team last season, his game against Argentina was disgraceful!

My bad, I momentarily forgot that Serbia had lost to Germany in the excitement of it all! The big margin over Germany could be very handy for getting second spot though.

These immortal words from Harry in "Dumb and Dumber" sum up my feelings for the Boomers (time and again), "Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and pull something like this, and totally redeem yourself"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKRtdgQhVbw

What a great win by the Boomers. Patty Mills played the way he always should, forget his points, which were great, he had seven dimes and only the two TOs. Everyone seemed to up there intensity and the crisp passing and tight defence was a stand out. I thought Newley looked good as well. Maric was effective but it was a little misleading as he got most of his points in the last two minutes of the game.

If we play like that in our last two games we will be pretty difficult to stop.

Triumphant statement by the Boomers, fantastic fan faith restoration tonic.

Barlow has impressed me so much with his defence and rebounding. He, Gibson and Martin were dominant defensively against Germany - so much for the NBL not having world class defensive players.
