Well done guys. Looked like a charge at the end of the game there, but the refs let it go. Fortunately we played better volleyball than they did!

Must have missed some of Maric's scoring early in the game (I only tuned in late in the 2nd quarter) because I don't recall him scoring 23!!! I liked what I saw from him in the low post though. He is quite mobile and deadly against an undersized team like Jordan.

The Jordanian's US import certainly showed up a defensive weakness for us. We don't appear to have anyone who can stop a guy like that. Does not bode well for later in the tournament. Brown better hope his team can do a better job of rotating on D in future to compensate. Our bigs did not do a good job of their help D on the penetration.

Good production from the bigs. Absolutely nothing from elsewhere. Not sure about Gibson over Newley? Would rather have Newley's slashing ability out there more often. Not only is it proven at international level, but Martin and Gibson just don't offer a whole lot at the 2, IMO.

Hopefully the smalls get a rocket for their performance on the boards. Too many times our bigs were outnumbered on both ends on the glass, and too many long rebounds went Jordan's way thanks to the guards being lazy and trying to get out on the break before we had the ball (that may have been a directive from the coaches - to get out and run - but at times all three smalls were not boxing out, leading to easy buckets for Adonis Jordan).

We're really going to have to find something from our guards as the champs go on. If the bigs are curtailed, we're going to need Newley and Mills to get going and hopefully someone else can get hot. It'll be interesting to see if we have the capacity to play an effective inside-outside offence, or if we'll 'live and die by the sword' with our bigs.

Finally, how shit were the refs? There was a blatant backcourt violation against them not called, then the ghost call on Nielsen and just general crappy stuff from them. Hopefully getting the rough end of the stick won't be something we have to get used to.

That is good, but I want to see him do it against someone good, not a bunch of relative midgets.

Can someone give me a rundown? I am in Izmir so I was trying to watch on fibatv while covering NZ v Lith (Penney amazing and Vukona suberb as NZ ran them close but couldnt get ovr the hump).

Looked like we were very tentative and loose with the ball from what I could tell.

I have not watched the game but just viewed the highlight package on FIBATV.com.

Bloody hell what went wrong? Looks lik Maric, Andersen and even Nielsen carried the team, but gor precious little from the smaller brigade.

By the looks of it, without Maric in the game we would have been doomed. Also, what happened to our defence? This was supposedly I strength going by pre-WC games - it looks like it went out the window?

It was a very nice put back dunk by Maric on the trail too!!!

I guess if we were to have a bad game, it was better to do so against Jordan and still come away with a win rather than against a team like Germany, Serbia or Argentina.

Love to see some more comments from peple after they have watched this morning's Fox Sports replay.

BA Recap: http://linky.com.au/d5j6n

Next game is against Argentina, at 4:30AM AEST Monday morning. We have to pull up our socks and fast if we want to be competitive in that game let alone get a win.

Okay, I've now watched the game in its entirety, checked the boxscore, and read a few forum comments. It is difficult to see what went so wrong for us. We shot 51% to their 41%. Turnovers were down, rebounding was about even (although they had 16 offensive rebounds to our 9). David Andersen, who had a very good offensive game, lead Australia with four assists, that says something right there, I think it is just our general structure, and a lack of intensity that is the culprit. Jordan did beat NZ by 2 in a warm up match in the last week so their form is respectable, but really.....this would have ranked as possibly Australia's worst ever International defeat had we lost it *Adam shakes his head in bemusement* That's basketball for you I guess, that's why the USA can lose to Puerto Rico, Italy, Argentina and Greece on any given night. Overnight Lebanon beat Canada, and France (who we beat by 1) dumped gold medal faves Spain so we were (almost) in good company.

I think Brett Brown summed it up well in a timeout... they are out working us, out hustling us and every loose ball; they just want it more.

Our outside game did not work for us and I think the guards dribbled the ball too much. We played 2m outside the 3pt line for the majority of the shot clock.

Maric & Andersen superb when they got the ball down low and Neilsen toiled hard.

I really dont understand why we use so many players. For mine, Gibson, Martin & Markovic give us the same thing so there is no need to play all 3 of them.

Mills sat for too long and he was the only one who looked to push the ball like we did in the lead up games. When we did, it looked like we could just dribble all the way for an easy bucket.

BUT a win is a win and it maybe the wake up call we needed, something to spur us on now.

I have not seen the entire game, as I only tuned in halfway through the 2nd quarter and then missed bits and pieces of the third BUT the things that stood out for me as to why we almost lost were:
1) No-one could stop that big US guard of theirs. He was blowing by everyone we put on him and creating havoc.
2) I'm guessing the Jordanians had the shooting game of their lives because they kept making big shots from behind the arc all game.
3) Their long shots led to lots of long rebounds and our guards were consistently out of position to grab them.
4) Not getting our hands on those long rebounds and using Markovic as our primary point meant we didn't push the ball enough. This team needs to get easy transition baskets to keep the scoreboard ticking.
5) Apart from Andersen we were ice cold from outside.
6) Ando and especially Maric were able to have their way with the Jordanian bigs inside, but our team is inept at getting them the ball on a consistent basis.

Scratch my comment about Markovic. He just seemed to be playing more than Mills when I was watching, but Mills played a lot more minutes looking at the boxscore. That's what you get for only seeing about half the game!

Markovic, Mills and Gibson all playing point guard within the first 12 minutes of the contest. In the same time, there was Ingles, Martin, and Gibson playing the 2 spot. Not much stability in the guard positions. Do we need that kind of shuffling? It pretty much continued throughout the game. It can't be easy getting into a rhythm with that kind of player changeover.

The over-dribbling on offence is a great point. If you look at the BBeijing Olympics the ball rarely hit the floor in the half court and it didnt stay still for more than a couple of seconds.

That is the sort of crispness we need at international level. The one problem with our defence is that it relies on crowding the ball side, so when a team moves the ball well it can be cut apart.

And ball movement is something Argentina do well so a couple of adjustments needed for tonight.

Our offense consists of side pick and rolls of constant dribble hand offs. All on ball stuff with very little cutting, ball movement or screens away from the ball. This style of game requires players who can break static defenders down off the dribble and do0minant big men.Maybe Brown hasn't noticed the Parker and Duncan are not in out team. With Mills the only guy who seems to be able to turn the corner(and he seems to not be able to do that as well as before) this is not the most suitable style for our team. We need player movement, ball movement and screens off the ball so that players are recieving the ball ready to shoot against defenders closing out and then they can either shoot of shotfake and penetrate and kick again if the D rotates. The bigs can then react to the way the defenders play the screens away and dive to the hole or pin defenders at thye fron of the rim on miss matches.

Great point anon, and it is also not the style of play Australians play growing up. Unlike the stylw in Europe and North America, we are a nation that moves the ball and has player movement away from the ball.

NZ play this style very well and teams find it very hard to defend them.

The commentary on the FIBA TV highlights is brilliant at the end!

"Looking for the last shot of the game and there it is, and it's missed.... and it's in, and it's in, and it's missed, and it's missed again, and.... Australia by one!"

All it needs is "boom goes the dynamite!"

That's right, paul. We aren't even playing our own style of game.

Getting the ball in the hole shouldn't be such a struggle. It's not like these guys are unfamiliar playing with each other, either. Most of the current team participated in the Beijing Games, and those that did not (Markovic, Martin, Maric, Gibson) have played with each other in numerous junior teams. In fact, it's basically an amalgamation of the Beijing team and the 2003 and 2005 junior teams. Baynes is the odd one out, but he's not getting court time, anyway.

I think the style we are playing does not suit our slashers. When you look at the perimeter guys thats most of them. Ingles, Newley, Martin all best when moving without the ball and/or receiving the ball in motion. If we play with ball and player movement and less dribbling then we can also play bigger like we have in the past with Newley Ingles or Barlow spending time in the two spot and Wortho in the three. Our current style would also be the main reason Barlow has gone from the rotation. Another at best when moving and posting up on miss matches.

Just an other thought to my previous post. Did Brown along with many of us overestimate the ability of Mills at this stage of his career. Did he think that he was Tony Parker like and would be able to break everyone down off the dribble like he did to the USA in Beijing. Did he design this offense because he thought Mills would be our star once Bogut was gone without thought as to how others would cope. Once it was found that this wont happen he has not adjusted to the fact, maybe because we sqeezed out enough W's in the warm up games.

Reply #287375 | Report this post

Possibly, I think a lot of people got carried away with Mills performance at Beijing while forgetting that his points in the half court came through our four out offence and the lanes created in that by our big men being able to hit shots.

Newley was also a big beneficiary of this.
