Will Rodman make the HOF?

After watching the Hall of Fame speeches for the Dream Team, and of course one S.Pippen yesterday, it got me thinking about another good player from that era, Dennis Rodman.

Bit curious as to people's thoughts regarding whether or not the rebounding machine should or should not make it to the Hall of Fame.

A lot of his antics turned off a lot of people, but should this count against his basketball achievements?

Key member of 5 NBA title teams
Defensive player of the year twice
Seven time 1st team defense (1 2nd team, 2 3rd)
7 time leader in rebounds per game
8 time leader in TRB%
#1 all time in career rebounding percentage
2 time all star (screwed over on this stat)

I personally believe that you should make it on what you did on the court, not off of it (much like Wayne Carey in the AFL).

Interested to read other's opinion on this matter though..

It depends on what sort of players the NBA wants in their Hall of Fame. If they're only going for the famous names, then he won't be included.

Rodman for all accounts should be included in the HoF. Was arguably the best rebounder of the 90's. Would still put the likes of the Admiral and Mutombo over him as all round better defenders.

Brilliant role player for the day, great hustle and completely reckless, meaning he was willing to do something that may result in injury just to get the ball.

All the stats you've listed are certainly worthy of him getting strong consideration, it just depends on the NBA's stance with who they want on the list.

He is without a doubt worthy of the HOF.
I think the voting panel are just worried about him turning up to the presentations in a wedding dress.
Hopefully the best ever rebounder (yes, better than even Russ and Wilt) will get a spot one day, but I bet Dennis is not losing any sleep over it.

For me he is a definate Hall of Famer. If Dennis Johnson can make the hall of fame for a career as a defensive specialist on title teams then surely guys like Rodman, Horry can get a look in for their key contributions to their multiple championship teams.

Dennis Rodman deserves to be in the HOF hands-down.
His achievements as many of you have listed back it up.

I also agree that he's the best rebounder of all time including over Wilt and Russell.

Totally agree with him being inducted into the HoF. Like DB5 pointed out, you should be judged on your on-court exploits rather than those off it.

Also, if it is on court antics keeping him out, why is Isiah, or even Barkley in there then?

@ DB5 - You're right. Barkley spitting on a little girl is just as bad as kicking a reporter in the groin or calling Larry Bird over-rated due to being white, if not worse!
I'd say it's more about the off-court antics than on the court. I can't fathom another explanation.

The difference between Isaiah and Barkley's off-court antics is that they were unlikely to embarrass the hall when they were enshrined. Who knows what Rodman would get up to. I'm not saying he shouldn't be there, I think he should be. But I think 'God in Basketball Shoes' is spot on...their would have to be a legitimate worry about him showing up and making a mockery of the whole proceedings. I think this more than anything will keep him out.

Isiah sexually harrassing an employee.

Barkley throwing a bloke through a window in a pub brawl.

Rodman didn't even kick the dude in the nuts, I remember watching that game ha ha, the cameraman milked it, and milked it well.
Rodman did headbutt the ref though.

I really think he deserves this title.

Well it might not happen while David Stern is in charge. Both loathe each other. Stern wants Rodman to kiss his butt and Rodman will never ever do that and said so.

Apart from the off-court stuff and worrying about how he might show up at the ceremony, the issues with Stern would contribute also.

Imagine Rodman accepting his induction into the HoF in a wedding dress - his inclusion would come with a few conditions one would think.

Rodman has to be in the HOF. Its called the Basketball HOF not the Basketball and off court behaviour HOF. He defiantly deserves the title.

NBA Agent - defiantly is likely how he would accept it too.

Most of Rodman's off court antics have been fairly harmless - it is all part of his shock and horror persona. He has gone too far on too many occasions perhaps, but it is his very character that makes him such an intriguing individual.

I am sure he will get an HOF call-up, but it may not be for some years yet.
