What do ABA coaches look for in assistant coaches, someone to agree with them and confirm their brilliance or someone who offers an alternate viewpoint? Do all the coaches in the ABA have assistants and why do some have so many? Has an assistant coach ever said anything worthwhile or dared to?

I have always thought that one of the major shortcomings of Brendan Joyces reign up here on the coast was the lack of a strong assistant. Mark Watkins was a lovely bloke and had a great knowlege of the game but he didnt have the personality or drive to stand up and question the coach. As a result Brendan just did what he wanted and stuffed it all up.
A strong oach is vital but there also needs to be an equally strong assistant to keep everything in check.

Do all the coaches in the ABA have assistants and why do some have so many?Many assistants might see it as an opportunity to learn or get their foot in the door for future opportunities. If they're voluntary positions, head coaches might think "Why not?" and leave them a few mundane tasks without expecting them to have a vocal role.

IMO, the best Asst coach is like a food critic - looks for faults.

Great call Jack!!! A great assistant should challenge or question everything, but must be prepared to offer an alternative or slight adjustment to back this up.
As for ABL assistant's, you can be a yes person whilst plotting the downfall of the head coach to further your career, or you can be proactive and build the team and your own knowledge of the game. But it all depends on where the assistant is in their learning and where the head coach is at.
