NBL advertising for full-time refs manager

The National Basketball League is continuing to make major strides forward with Basketball Australia announcing that it is seeking to appoint a full-time Referees Manager for season 2010/11.

The position will see the NBL's panel of officials working under the direct guidance of a full-time NBL employee for the first time in almost a decade.

The new role will be responsible for the recruitment, training, development, rostering and evaluation of all NBL referees. Once the Referees Manager is appointed, their key projects will include developing and implementing selection criteria and performance standards for NBL referees and reviewing the existing referee recruitment and development structures.

NBL General Manager Chuck Harmison said the move to appoint a full-time person to the new role reflected the importance of continually improving the already high quality of NBL referees.

"As a league we have been making significant headway in recent seasons in terms of identifying talented young officials coming through the ranks," said Harmison. “We feel however that the area of officiating is so critical to our business that we want to invest more heavily in it than we have in the past. This will ensure we don’t just maintain current standards of officiating, but continue to improve year on year.”

Harmison paid tribute to outgoing Referees Manager Pat Tilden’s efforts towards improving the pool of NBL officials.

“Pat’s role has been a thankless one but he has always tackled it with great energy and professionalism,” Harmison continued. “While strictly speaking Pat was not 'full time’ he put in countless hours in his role and His passion for the game and for officiating excellence regularly saw him contribute above and beyond the call. We hope Pat will continue to be involved in the NBL and basketball overall and we will work with the new Manager to ensure they build on Pat’s significant contribution to the NBL.”

Applications for the new full-time role of NBL Referees Manager are currently being sought and full details can be found on the Basketball Australia website.

Im surprised it wasnt a fulltime role already, that really is pathetic. Atleast they are finally doing something about it, how anyone is supposed to train and organise every umpire in the league as well as maintain high standards part time is rediculous.
Hopefully this will lead to a higher standard of umpiring and consistancy in the league.

The league had a full time referees manager in its prosperous years. Probably up until they moved to Sydney.

'new role reflected the importance of continually improving the already high quality of NBL referees'.
That will do me....the current standard of refereeing is well below the standard of coaching and athletes that compete in the NBL. The league is rife with inconsistant rulings and refs that get caught up in the moment and bow down to the home crowds, ignoring the eb and flow of the game. Most refs in the NBL are to scared to make a correct call down the stretch in NBL games as they seek the approval of most home crowds....sad but true, just look at every teams home record. NBL refs are a joke

Skud- I'm rarely supporting the league, but this move make me happy. Because hey, at least they recognize they needed one.

I noticed , at the ceremony - The NBL had suffered another set back - being sued , by the Three Blind Mice, for copyright.
The alleged infringement - involves the likeness
of NBL refs - to the 3 blind mice.

Tilden still controls the WNBL, so nothing much will change for that league, same old incompetence and favouritism. Hopefully Carey will look at the NBL with a clearer mind.
