Sydney Kings signings?

I read the following on the NBL website

It's nothing against Corey, he's a hell of a talent, but . . . with the signings we've made it's not where we're headed,' Robilliard said.

Who have the kings already signed?

Supposedly Dontaye Draper, Luke Kendall and Ben Knight... If the rumours have any weight.

luke martin is close to putting pen on paper for kings but you would think it would have to be some good guards to rule out homicide, maybe barlow.

Crocs are also after Bulgarian EJ Rowland. They go from superstar league mvp to EJ. Nothin against EJ but You would rather homicide anyday, suppose ej is more of a team player he can put up nice assist numbers.

Just a nice way of saying they don't care for him, maybe? If Homicide was all that, I think we'd hear of a lot more teams actually going for him.

How can the league MVP not be wanted by every club?

Thats like saying Ablett was told by geelong that he was no longer required and then he went on the market and no club wanted him

Could he be asking for too much money?

Not the same comparison, Banker. Does a Williams have baggage that an Ablett (Gary Jr version) doesn't? I don't know if he does but the Ben Cousins episode shows how an AFL mvp (Brownlow medallist anyway) almost went begging because of personal baggage. It just happened that everyone knew about that baggage - eventually (a couple of years after his Brownlow).

NBL clubs have a more limited budget to work with than AFL clubs. One player demanding a lot can leave relatively little left to build a team around in the NBL but you still have a lot left in your pocket in the AFL.

The Banker, Homicide is expensive and more of an individual player as opposed to someone who is looking to get their team mates open looks ect.
He is a very good player but his personality may not gel with a lot of teams.
I believe that is why teams are not chasing his signature publicly (behind the scenes may be another kettle of fish)

Very few NBL basketballers have the ability to actually draw crowds at the moment

Hodge and Homicide are 2 great examples, They have great on court charisma

Aussie players lack that in our game

Players like Hodge and Homicide make games worth going to

I hope someone decides to keep him in Australia

Very few teams with one or two superstar players win championships in the NBL as usually the support cast is compromised in quality and effort. Recent examples are Williams and Hodge, both in the NBL and the recent HSH event. Going back a few years, how many championships did the 36ers win with Robert Rose and Leon Trimmingham? Great to watch but no banners hanging from the rafters from that era. In fact Rose for as good an individual he was, won only one Championship in 1992 with the Southeast Melbourne Magic.

Better a great team than a few great players, but then there is always the exception with the 1986 36ers team.

Banker, and how much success have Homicide's or Hodge's teams ever had? Hodge still hasn't ever played in a playoff game.

These guys dominate the offence and don't make their teammates better. Both are also limited basketballers in that neither can shoot and both seem to think their value is higher than it really is.

Homicide IMO really hurt himself with his play in the HSH tournament. Ball hogging galore, had a 40 point game off of plenty of shots and had two double figure turnover games. Terrible.

what's this obssession with people who can shoot. get over it. just cos you can shoot doesn't make you a great baller. in fact shooting is one of the easiest developed game in basketball.

a great coach once said "it take months to develop a jump shot but years to develop a good handling skills"

ahhh...there's many many players in the league who's able to develop a decent jump shot over 1 summer...you're an idiot, who are you anyway to make that comment when he coached in NCAA and NBA.

After playing at the Nike Hoop Summit this year, why would Cadee sign to play in the NBL instead of heading to college? A very good college career not only provides im with a free education, but also a shot at getting noticed for the NBA or European leagues...

LC, just as many Aussies have gone to the NBA from the NBL as college, and more to Europe from the NBL than college.

There is also the situation of being academically qualified to attend college as well and being prepared to undertake the study. Some just dont qualify and others just dont want to study.

Someone needs to explain how easy shooting is to Shaq and his coaches.

Tempted as I am to launch into the Rose/Trimmingham mention, I think we're confusing "talented players" with "selfish players". A player can have great individual skills and ability to score / create their own shot as well as being a team player - ask Brett or Darnell.

From The Roar:

The Sydney Kings should unveil their first player signings for 2010/11 next week, club General Manager Bob Turner has told AAP.

The Kings are expected to be a big player in the free agent market during the off-season after being readmitted to the NBL in March.

Turner told AAP's Adrian Warren that the club was focusing their efforts on signing players who can handle playing in the high-profile Sydney marketplace and will reveal their first signings next week.

"We are down the track on a number of players, but we’re trying to coordinate venues, schedule and all that stuff all at once," Turner told AAP on Wednesday.
Sounds like they have a lot to catch up on. Heard something about them not being able to sign contracts as quickly as they planned because there wasn't a legal entity in place? Something like that anyway.

The article in question mentions Tim Hudson as a likely assistant to Ian Robilliard.

Any word on where the Kings will be playing in Sydney?

I'll buy a couple of season passes today if they're playing at the Entertainment centre in the city.

However if they're out at Homebush not a chance - it's a hole in the ground and costs you $20 each time you park out there.

From the Kings' Twitter account:

Our announcements this week are delayed to coordinate with the NBL. Stay tuned for the first wave of announcements next week!
