Are non-top-tier ABL players paid?

Hi there, My son is approaching seniors hoping to play ABL in a few years time. Just wondering if they these guys, other than imports, are monetary paid for their services to the club or given other benefits? I'd assume captains or top players receive alot more incentitive? Interested.

Most teams will pay players "incidental costs" and this goes for imports too. How those costs are defined are very loose.

Petrol & food money. NBL guys dropping down might pick up 20 - 30 k & imports get up to 40k. Decent aussie kids can get 15 - 20. Good extra cash on top of a good job but peanuts compared to AFL. Nic Naitanui looks a wonderful athlete & IMO been a great bball player but he'll earn $500k a year for the next 12 - 15 years. Good NBL players will be lucky to get a third of that. SEABL/ABA salaries haven't changed in 15 years.

Youd be lucky to get a pair of socks at some clubs. Delivering pizzas would earn you better money

orbit, your figures are WAY above what a player can earn in ABL in SA.

In places like Bendigo & Cairns these figures are relevant but best case scenario. I played with Bulleen 20 years ago & got petrol money & dinner allowance on the road if we were lucky. Same applies now as the game hasn't grown in popularity. Our Prez would take it from his own pocket & i doubt he ever got reimbursed. I know when guys like Rigby & Hill went to Bendigo in the off season they picked up $800 -$1000 a week for the 20 week season.

That sounds about right, but here in SA even the top tier are making a bit of loose change

The rules state that each club in the CABL has a salary cap of $15,000. A single team (men or women)cannot go above $9,000 per season in payments.
Therefore what would usually happen is one team would have $9,000 in player payments leaving the other with only $6,000 maximum.

However, there are some players who are paid outside of these rules for coaching juniors, admin etc. which is permitted in a round about way.

To answer your question though, if your son is one of the lower players then unfortunately the salary cap is used on high profile players leaving the bench with very little.

I know a top tier North guy who gets $50 a game, when it actually gets paid.

There are no rules on Salary cap. Its all a gentleman's agreement LOL!!

See if you can find it in any by law?

Good searching!!!

Most clubs make a token payment. Many imports can't actually get paid due to Visa issues.

If you're a student and want a holiday down under, it's a good gig!

In Vic, the imports and NBL/fringe NBL can get decent money as listed above, other players get can get a small amount per game, $100-$200, while some get petrol money if theyre lucky.

It's a bit like country footy, the best get good money while the rest get peanuts.

I remember from my time in SA that very few got paid anything decent, as a number of people have already pointed out.

I would say country footy in SA would be better paid.

Some guys retire from SANFL footy to play in the country. It's not uncommon to hear of guys being paid $500-$600 a game in country footy and in rare cases some close to a $1000 a game in amateur league footy.

Some players get the takings from the bar at home games.

Others work at said bar and get paid quite well.
