Penney wins NBL Rnd 19 POTW

New Zealand Breakers' prolific shooting guard Kirk Penney has taken out his second National Basketball League (NBL) Player of the Week award in three weeks after a Round 19 performance that has helped keep the Breakers’ playoff chances afloat.

Penney won the NBL’s weekly award back in Round 17 and also came close to winning again in Round 18, just being edged out by Gold Coast’s Adam Gibson.

With the Breakers needing to win the remainder of their fixtures to have a chance at a playoff berth, Penney stepped up once more in his team’s Round 19 game against the fourth-seeded Wollongong Hawks on Thursday at the North Shore Events Centre. He hit 23 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 from downtown.

Penney also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals, which helped the Breakers upset the higher-ranked Hawks, 88-60. Penney was also great from the free throw line hitting six of his seven attempts.
Runner ups were Maxey (19 and 12 in a win, and then 21 points in a loss) and Homicide (17/8/5 vs Cairns).
Other players in consideration for the weekly award in Round 19 included Julius Hodge (Melbourne), Erron Maxey (Gold Coast), CJ Bruton (New Zealand), Russell Hinder (Townsville), Brad Williamson (Townsville), Phil Jones (Cairns), Rich Melzer (Cairns), Adam Gibson (Gold Coast), Luke Schenscher (Perth), Dusty Rychart (Cairns), Rhys Martin (Wollongong), Tim Coenraad (Wollongong) and Mat Campbell (Wollongong).
Right choice or would you have gone with someone else?

I'm happy with Penney being named POTW although Maxey would have been a worthy winner also.

I don't know how they select these awards and as we go through the season their credibility gets less and less. Happy for a Breaker to get it. But in a blowout!!!
Hardly ranks in my book.
Maxey's and Phil Jones's eforts were vastly superior.

With only one round to go still not one Wildcat to win POTW , just shows you dont need a Hodge or a Penny

Probably the worst call this year. Maxey by a mile!

By a mile is exaggerating it. Penney did lead the Breakers to thrash a team that was 3-0 against them. Close call.

He wasn't even the best player in that game IMO (CJ) and shot 7/18 vs. Maxey's 15/23 over 2 games.

Penney is the best player in the league fullstop.
The Hawks have been one of the top teams all season and as mentioned earlier have beaten NZ 3 times so Penney leading the Breakers to a convincing win is deserving of POTW in my eyes. Phill Jones was unlucky with his shooting display against Perth, couldn't believe that Cairns let him cool off in tha second half though, he was absolutely on fire in the first

"Penney is the best player in the league fullstop."

Agreed.

Doesn't make him POTW.

I wouldn't be surprised if Penney doesn't go back 2 back POTW after the win over the Blaze. He is playing solid and must be a contender for MVP again even tho he spent a large portion of the start of the season injured. Breakers on a roll, to little to late, can't wait to find out
