Taipans short on 2010/11 pledges

The Cairns Taipans will lodge an expression of interest to compete in the NBL next season despite receiving only half the number of season ticket pledges they had wanted.

The Taipans had hoped to make good its slogan of "2010 in 2010" yesterday but last night the number of pledges stood at about 1000.

The club will continue to receive pledges until Thursday, when it must lodge its expression of interest with Basketball Australia.

So next year the teams will have to send in an EOI?

Was that in place with the 'old NBL?'

I think that each year they'd have to register their intention to compete in some way.

I hope they can garner the support required. The community-owned model was always going to be tough to keep going.

Hope the Taipans keep rolling. Such a good team to have and definately good to have the game reach as far north as Cairns.

Where's all the billionaires who want to own sports teams? can't a few leave Europe and the US and try for some aussie clubs?

its a difficult time in cairns at the moment,
with unemployment over 10 per cent and heading into a traditional 'down time' for business in general.

a really tough time to ask for $$ support from both business and public sectors.

for the community model to really work they probably need a purpose built 3,500 seat stadium, with revenue coming from not only ticket sales but from merchandise, food and drink stalls(manned by volunteers from development squads etc)

can that work....maybe....probably not.

i cant see a white knight on the horizon at the moment.

larry might be able to help them limp through another season but until corporate cairns recovers the future is bleak.
