McKee named Rd 12 Player of the Week
After finally breaking his duck in the National Basketball League's Player of the Week award last round, Wollongong Hawks’ star American import Tywain McKee has gone back-to-back by also being named the recipient of the NBL’s Round 12 honour.
McKee, widely tipped as a leading candidate for the Andrew Gaze Trophy for the NBL’s Most Valuable Player at season’s end, took 11 rounds to win his first weekly award but had another superlative performance in Round 12.
McKee wasn’t the only Hawk in contention for Player of the Week in Round 12, as teammates Cameron Tragardh and Larry Davidson were also both under consideration. Tragardh, whose nickname is 'Trigger’, had 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the same match, while Davidson had a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds.
New Zealand’s shooting star Kirk Penney was also a leading candidate for the weekly award after showing he is well and truly over the back injury that sidelined him for most of the first half of the season.
Other contenders for the Round 12 weekly honour included Corey ‘Homicide’ Williams (Townsville), Julien ‘Skip’ Mills’ (Cairns), Anthony Petrie (Gold Coast), John Gilchrist (Adelaide), Julius Hodge (Melbourne), Daniel Johnson (Melbourne), Luke Schenscher (Perth), CJ Bruton (New Zealand), Rick Rickert (New Zealand), Brad Williamson (Townsville) and Adam Gibson (Gold Coast).
