AIS Scholarships + WNBL Season

I'm just wondering how this works... the current members of the AIS would be graduating around now-ish wouldn't they? But do they get to finish off the WNBL season up until next year, or do the new scholarship holders come in and start playing in their place?

oldies leave, newbies come in and learn the ropes. ball-handling, lay-ups, passing, defensive footwork, etc.

Nah, they won't be graduating anyone mid-season if they can help it. In other words, the only ones who will be leaving around Christmas are the ones who are disillusioned with the system and leave on their own terms. The last batch of AIS-graduates [Cambage, Jarry, Ireland, Gaze etc] have all only graduated a couple of months ago.

So yeah, the only one's who will be "graduating" at the end of this WNBL season are the ones who were convinced by coach Brown to stick around to help an already-woeful AIS team attempt to compete in a league where they are way out of their depth; the rest of the girls there have barely even begun their preparation for whatever World Championships it is that they are in contention for.

Everyone should leave the girls and the program alone. They are doing their best in a bad situation - the previous staff did bugger all and created a certain culture - the new staff are copping the brunt of it after inheriting a basketcase. They appear to be working hard to make it better.

There'll be new girls coming in over the next 12 months and they'll create something new and special. Phil will get it done. He's got a track record. Everyone should cut their bitterness towards this group, cut them some slack and jump in behind them.

All i'm wondering though is that there are new girls who have just got scholarships and will start there in the new year (january). Do they get to play in this current wnbl season, or is it more than likely that they won't start playing in the team until the next season 10/11?

Ireland is on Adelaide's roster; she'll be suiting up as soon as she's recovered from an injury.

Ireland went there in 2008 with Farley and Madgen, they're still there so it figures she was cut

i think you'll find that 5 girls will be leaving next week to make way for some of the new batch. Scholarships always finish at the end of november and I believe only Madgen and Kunek had their scholarships extended to the end of the season. Im sure ireland would of had the choice of staying till the end of november but probably opted to have the whole season at adelaide rather than trying to come in halfway through

ok, we'll agree to disagree on why Ireland was cut early but can't see her making any bigger impact than Williams and think they were recruited for the same reason.

Last names always help in aussie bball! Upon saying that the AIS really doesnt equate to success or faster development in basketball anymore.

Political appointments seem to define basketball in Australia and any number of worthy candidates will continue to be overlooked in favour of the well connected. That will persist until basketball cracks main stream status with scrutiny and accountability as cornerstones of the organisation.

Part of the problem is that the AIS could take 100 players into its ranks and they would all offer something and be relatively successful thus masking the selection process. Those picked are certainly good players, just some would argue they are not the best or most deserving in a number of areas. It's a wonderful crutch to lean on by selectors when they 'pick on potential' and impossible to criticise because when they are duds, as many are, "they didn't live up to their potential" and the odd ones that do, "it's a we told you so".
Still, it's the system that's out of shape and all the girls selected have all our best wishes for a successful career.

anon,

Since all selections are 'subjective'. How do we then make the correct decisions?

The old '95% criticism, finish with 5% best wishes' post. Your kid not selected? If they're good enough, they will succeed despite AIS I'm sure. More than enough opportunities out there.

A very hard topic to discuss, In my opinion the AIS did the best thing and move on Kingsman.
The Cultre was bad and he cleary on result wasn't up to it. With Cambage they should have won a medal and it proves have a look at cambage in senior basketball. She Dominates.

I think the next crop of kids look to have depth and size. Within 12 months Phil Brown (Best Female Coach) will have it turned around.

Keep your eye on Carley Mijovic 15 year old superstar, The kid has size 6ft 5 and skill with 3pt shoot range. Cloest thing we have to Lauren. Tippett will be solid and Blicavs is an athlete. Add Payne and Seekamp and soon the Girls will be back.

Within within twelve months the AIS will be .500 WNBL winning team!!!! Just you watch

No offence. But have any of you people actually seen some of these girls play. There are definately some with connections to get pushed through ahead of others just as good and if not better. Mijovic is a big girl, but take away her height and she would not even get a mention. While there are some legit girls, i do have to scratch my head at some as i just don't get it. Basketball would unfortunately be the only sport where talent and ability can be just an after thought in the selection process. More people in positions for the betterment of all basketball players rather than their own agendas may result in people actually not turning their backs on the sport -we can only hope!!!

Ive seen all of them play...Obviously you havent. Mijovic was the leading point scorer as a bottom age under 16 state player. Injured when she was top age. Not only would she have lead the scoring but she would have Rebound as well. The kids a Pro!!!! Take from me she will play 4/3 as well and not 5 as she has as a junior.

There isn't a kid in the country with her talent, size and athletic ability. Find me another female basketballer that is dominant right hand and switches to left and you cant tell the difference!!!!

No Offence but you must be one of those people who were or is being overlooked. Cambage,Paneluna,Francis,Tolo, all the stars of the future. Mijovic and Tippett right on the heels. Mijovic is the pick of the talent coming through and will play for many years beside Cambage, Tolo and Francis if she learns to work hard.

As for the new AIS take in's one thing is for sure Phil Brown wont make mistakes. He's on the money and our girls in Australian Junior ranks are world basketball ready. Phil will polish and perform.

Whilst I am sure Mijovic is a very talented junior and well worth her scholarship to AIS perhaps you should check your facts. She was far from leading scorer or rebounder as a bottom age player at U16 nationals. There were many top and bottom age players that had better pts and rebound stats than her.

Haha, just enjoying this post from the beginning of last season:

"Within within twelve months the AIS will be .500 WNBL winning team!!!! Just you watch" - Anonymous +918.

Haha! If the AIS beat anyone other then Adelaide and maybe the West Coast, I'll be mightily surprised. All of the institute players are talented - that is a given - but the days of the AIS winning championships are forever gone.

It wouldn't matter if the team was the greatest team to ever participate in the program (ie. better then the Jackson years) - you still would not see them with a winning record. The strength and depth of the competition is too great for youngsters to be as dominant as they once were.

You're saying that you can name a lineup of current youngsters who can contend with the likes of Bulleen, Dandenong, Canberra, Sydney and Logan on a daily basis?

Good luck mate.
