Bogut: the Best Defender in the NBA...

...well, maybe a slight exaggeration.

This article argues that on a points allowed per possession basis, no one player has a more important bearing on their own team's defensive efficiency than our very own Andrew Bogut.

Peruse the article and discuss if you will.

Sorry, Linky not happy today :(

Just goes to show how important a fit and healthy Bogut is for the Bucks to have any chance at being successful. Their good start to this year is testamount to that.

I still think Bogut's best years are ahead of him, and he is starting to put up some impressive numbers this season, and consistently too - all without Redd in the lineup.

hahaha are you serious, perhaps after gooden stacked it he should have run over and double teamed dirk, instead of just standing there and watching that game winner drop

That Jennings has been an x factor 4 the Bucks as well. Fingers crossed Bogut can stay healthy. I think the 80+ game season is to much for his body!

Absolute joke, he is not anywhere near the top 30 defenders in the league.

The top defenders in the league are:
Josh Smith, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Gerald Wallace, Shane Battier, Ron Artest, Kobe Bryant,
Emeka Okafor, Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan

Definitely agree he is not the best defender in the NBA. However Bogut's ability to improve his team's defence should not really be questioned as the facts back up the fact he makes his team better.

And Anon, who made you the person to decide who is and is not the best defender in the NBA in any case?

Funny how some people look at it. Defence is a lot more than one on one defence - Dillon Boucher is a great example of that. Just getting into a passing lane to prevent a pass or hedging to force the team out of their offence, reading the play and bumping the cutter are just as important as defending one on one.

Andrew Bogut is a very good defensive player in a team situation. How about all you haters actually watch a game he is in rather than reading about it on the net? If you don't think he plays good D you obviously don't know much about basketball...

According to Basketball Reference, a player's Defensive Rating is an estimate of their points allowed per 100 possessions. It can also can be slightly skewed by a player playing on a good defensive team - Tracy McGrady, who is generally considered to be an average defensive player, has the same career DR as Michael Jordan - but is still a good indicator of the better defensive players, as usually the top individual defensive players stil have a lower Defensive Rating than others. The top 20 (as of 28/11/2009) is as follows:

Defensive Rating 2009-10
1. Gerald Wallace-CHA 93.6
2. Greg Oden-POR 95.1
3. Dwight Howard-ORL 95.7
4. Rasheed Wallace-BOS 95.8
5. Joel Przybilla-POR 96.0
6. Tyson Chandler-CHA 97.0
7. Kevin Garnett-BOS 97.7
8. Rajon Rondo-BOS 97.7
9. Lamar Odom-LAL 97.8
10. Kendrick Perkins-BOS 98.0
11. Josh Smith-ATL 98.3
12. Dirk Nowitzki-DAL 98.3
13. Andrew Bynum-LAL 98.5
14. Ersan Ilyasova-MIL 98.5
15. Drew Gooden-DAL 98.6
16. Marcus Camby-LAC 98.9
17. Rudy Fernandez-POR 99.0
18. Thabo Sefolosha-OKC 99.3
19. Matt Barnes-ORL 99.4
20. Andrew Bogut-MIL 99.4

Kobe Bryant (generally considered a good defender by many) sits just outside the top 20 with a DR of 100.
