Are coaches worth anything?

Are ABL coaches worth the dollars they get and do they 'win' games or would the clubs who have spent the money and put the best teams on court win anyway?
Is Norwood's men's coach 'the messiah' or just a naughty little boy with the best players? Would he be able to lift Woodville's women's team to 2 wins per season instead of 1?
Do coaches make teams or teams make coaches at ABL level?

Rupert is the centrepiece of Norwood
Without him they would never have won back to back championships. Rupert works with fundamentals of players and therefore the terrific ball handling from the guards the post ability from our forwards and the fact that every player from point guard to centre can shoot 3's proves he's worth it. Rupert does not suffer mediocrity. Rupert's worth every cent Norwood pays him.

A coach has the same value as 1 Player.

No more no less

Consider the concept of a team of 6 on the floor at any one time

That is the value of a coach

Just like a weak or strong player they can be exploited or need stopping.

Just my 2c worth

Players make coaches!
Coaches tinker around and probably have some influence over the course of a game with preparation, tactics, subs and focus etc. but at the end of the day if you ain't got the horses????

Yes. Put the wrong coach with the wrong philosophies in front of a good team and watch them fail. (I should say I'm a Port supporter before the next bit.) Exhibit A - Mark Williams with Port this year. Exhibit B - Neil Craig in finals. Let the debate begin.

A good coach is worth every cent. How do you make a good coach? Coaching, time, effort, support etc etc.

Twiggy - Are you suggesting that Weber and Matthews did not have great ball handling skills before they were coached by Sapwell.

Flinder80. What Matthews and Webber did not have was each other and David Cooper in the middle to clean up for the other four players. Thomo and especially Krause were already known to chuck up a three of 10 when they played with Sapwell. His job was to put a talented team on the floor and win. He did that. Twice. Most of the players were developed by the Norwood Junior Program (Matthews @ Sturt aswell), back when it was strong. Sapwell go them in their prime- Thomo, Krause & Matthews or on the rise Webber.

And to the person who started this thread. Try coaching. There is a lot more to it than people think. The average Joe just thinks you have to tell the team what to do and they will do. Think again Buddy.

Is a coach worth anything? Think South Men's, 2008 vs 2009. League didn't change much. Sorry Panther.

I would like to use the quote " great players do not always make great coaches" to the last post. But it does not apply.

Without a coach, a team is only a group of individuals. I have never known a successful team that has not had at least a half-decent cach at the helm.
